zed2283 comments on Shipping to Colombia

Ok, thanks for the advice. That was what we originally thought to do (sell it here and send the money) but for $50 I might as well keep it in the garage. It seems that electronics and appliances sell for more down there than they do here, so I thought maybe I could come out a little ahead. But if I can get a decent refrigerator for 500,000 then that's a better option. Thanks!

zed2283 comments on Shipping to Colombia

Well... it's 10 years old and I figure I might be able to get $50 for it here. If I pay $200 to ship it, it's better than buying a new one there. No?

zed2283 comments on Tiger Paw Hostel Update....

Brian, I gotta ask... I take it you went to Clemson? Or is there another purple and orange tiger paw team out there?

I love the costeƱas but I agree that they are one huge group of chismosas. It's really hard for me to believe/understand why they talk about everyone and make up all the sh*t they do. But it's true.

Well isn't that what the AP is for? To let you re-enter before you have your green card?

zed2283 comments on Where to watch the Super Bowl in Barranquilla?

Hope you made it, it was a great time! A great turn-out (mostly Giants fans) and an awesome game! I didn't have my Brady jersey on but my wife had her Eli jersey on!

zed2283 comments on Barranquilla

Just got back and had an awesome time! Great city and wonderful people, everytime I visit!

zed2283 comments on Barranquilla info from PBH experts

The wifey says that the Barranquilla zoo is one of the best in Colombia. Buena Vista Mall is a nice American-style mall. La Murillo (the main avenue) is the happening place for nightlife. The best beaches are in Santa Marta, about an hour away, but they do have some beaches around Barranquilla (Salgar, Prado Mar, Puerto Colombia). My wife says you can also buy tickets to private beaches at Cajacopy or Comfamiliar. I don't know if I would call the city ugly, but it seems like a typical large latin city. I have found the people friendly and easy to talk to in general. It's best to stay in the northern part of the city, someplace like the Versalles, El Prado, or El Royal. I haven't stayed at the Prado or Royal, but I think they're more expensive, and the Versalles or American Golf are much better values. I also like the Majestic, though it's a little further south.

zed2283 comments on Where to watch the Super Bowl in Barranquilla?

I just asked the same question a week or so ago. My wife called around to a few places and we're going to watch the game at Henry's Cafe Bar. She said it's next to Parque Washington, above Pizza Hut (calle 80 cra 53, she thinks). We'll be there with a couple gringo friends and some of my wife's family, so feel free to join in the fun. I'll be the guy in the Tom Brady jersey.

Toneloc, what is the info on the place you are staying? I'll have to check it out for next time.

zed2283 comments on Trouble over IMs

Yeah, I can't get over how jealous and untrusting my wife is. She thinks that all the women are out to steal me away! If we were in Colombia, then it might actually be true... but unfortunately we're here in the U.S. But trust me, if she's blowing up like this now... it might be best to just run for cover. I find the whole thing very exhausting.

zed2283 comments on Carnaval in Barranquilla

Good luck finding a hotel room for $200. The Versalles was $150 when I checked 4 months ago but they're probably booked up. We ended up renting an apartment for the week, and with my two buddies going in on it the cost is only going to be $320 total for each of us! It's got 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. try: http://listado.mercadolibre.com.co/_CategID_1459

zed2283 comments on Carnaval in Barranquilla

I will be going to Carnaval for the first time this year also. Will be there with my wife and I'm dragging along two of my buddies so they can see what real women are like. See you all there! p.s. We're planning on watching the Super Bowl at Henry's on Sunday

zed2283 comments on Where to change money in Cartagena.

And to answer your question about the hotels, the ones I checked were about 3 times the normal rate. Cartagena is like an hour or hour and a half away. I asked my wife the same question because we are staying in Barranquilla but are planning to visit Cartagena, and she said that it would probably not be a good idea to go and return in the same day because it would be better not to be on the road later in the evening. She said there's some paramilitary type activity on some road near Cartagena. Anyone else know if that's true?

zed2283 comments on travel in Colombia- Barranquilla- Cartagena

I mean... what he said! I took a shuttle to Cartagena once also, but I think it was on Brasilia? Anyway, Tom's advice is sound. Take a taxi directly to the office.

zed2283 comments on travel in Colombia- Barranquilla- Cartagena

You can probably grab a taxi from the airport to the bus terminal. I rode a bus from Barranquilla to Santa Marta once and it was pretty nice.

zed2283 comments on Origin of the term "Gingo"

The Mexicans I know said that it comes from the green uniforms worn by American soldiers when they invaded Mexico... "green go home!"

La Troja is the place to be on Sunday (not for the game, but for the festivities)?
