Red, rosé or white, I like variety.
Right now, there's a shiraz, Ascender Cellars, Australia, in my glass. Not bad at all.

azunoman...red wine is natures answer to viagra....or getting your date loopy....jajajajajaja

hahahahahaha!!! I like to call it the 'warm and fuzzy' feeling.

I love a lot of Chilean wines BUT some of the South African reds are so good! Almost a smoky flavour, it must be a certain region I'm always buying from and something in the soil? Who knows. (I have to dig up names, I'm really bad and go with remembering what the label looks like).

My favourtie Pinot Noir is from a local Niagara winery, Inniskillin. Soooo good, like chocolate!

I'm heading to Colombia for a couple months so I'll probably be drinking mostly Chilean and Spanish I'm assuming?

did someone say wine???

podborski says on May 22, 2009, 16:37:

ok, this is perhaps my ONLY complaint about Colombia...not easy to find decent wine, especially in bars, hey maybe I can open a wine bar in Bogotá?

Actually last time I looked in carrefour it seemed to be ok, and not too horribly pricey

About the only thing you can get in zona rosa bars is casillero del diablo, which is ok, but not great.

podborski says on May 22, 2009, 16:47:

anyway, for anyone who cares, right now I only know argentinean wine. But if you are in the US or UK you might find the following:

El Felino Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon, especially 2006 if you can get it. About $14? Great value. I like Cab Sauv better than anything myself..

Bramare malbec or Cab sauv any year, it's freaking great wine if you like a big wine, at $35 or $40 USd it's my current favourite

Now if you get really lucky you might find a bottle of Australian cab Sauv called Branson Coach House, 2005, Greenock Barossa Valley. Normally costs $80 usd, but I heard it can be found on sale as big aussie reds are out of favour at the moment. 18% alcohol, tastes like port, best wine I've had at that price, and maybe best wine I've had period. Well, maybe not, but it was damn good.

Achaval ferrer cab sauv 2003-amazing. Not big, but very subtle and balanced...a real wine lover's wine.

Tomorrow I'll be drinking at a bottle of Bramare (it's my birthday!) and I plan to bring a bottle or 2 to Bogotá with me too.

Do any restaurants in Bog allow you to bring your own?

I think the ones I mentioned would be hard to find in bogotá

Maybe you'd find something from Catena Zapata or Sophenia, which are pretty good?

But avoid the mainstream argy winemakers like Rutini, although Trapiche makes some ok wine at the higher end

When I get there next week I'll check out what's available and maybe be able to make some suggestions

podborski says on May 22, 2009, 17:46:

in general I'd bet there are better chilean wines than argy wines for sale in Colombia...

kat: "that is my problem I only drink white wine, so when I am out in Bogota few places have wine and if they have as you say the only one available is casillero and it's not even cold!!!"
**************************
hmmm agree that white wine not chilled properly is pretty gross. It really makes such a difference with the taste doesn't it? Even if it's too cold too that ruins the wine I find. Well when I get sick of beer over the next couple of weeks, I'll have to start experimenting with the wine selection of Cartagena. Could be interesting indeed ;)

Wine Bar in Bogota some how seems really fitting! I'd visit for sure. What about a tapas / wine bar? hmmm?

Anybody try icewine? I have a bottle chilling in my fridge right now, I'm trying to decide if I should bring it down south with me but I'm not sure if it's past it's prime. I guess they really won't know the difference anyway...hehehe.

bring the icewine, it's probably unheard of in Colombia, and it's very hardy, it's so high in alcohol content it lasts forever, even opened. It'll be fine. Try it with cheesecake...it is a dessert wine after all. Not sure it would go with arequipe though

I'll look for El Felino and Bramare at my LC to go with my steaks this weekend.
Thanks
Sunday I had a wine called Cartagena from Chile I think it was, I guess because I got a bit sentimental, never making that mistake again.

I am probably going to end up in Chile when it's all said and done.....I have this fascination with their country....plus the pbh board there needs some ready, fire aim....but I love the Chilean wines...I avoid the Espana because of our differing views on their colonization methods...:)

I agree 100% with you on Chile! I could add Argentina(parts of)as well. Lots of good skiing, cycling, Trout fishing and Bird Hunting. I like the wines from these countries in the sub $9 a bottle class. These wines from both countries in this price range are extremely popular in Miami and so many to choose from!

Maybe Napa Valley. Could have been Espana.
about 30 usd in the states. Did I go back for more? si!!!
don't even remember, if it was Cabernet or red Zinfandel, my preference, or something else.

I think owning a wine bar in Bogotá would be the best possible job in the world, but I'd lose my shirt as I'd probably (more like certainly) give free drinks to every hot girl that walked in

it would be a fun way to lose money though

I'll scout locations next week

I'd like to put it in Usaquen, but probably have to stick with Zona T which has lots more traffic

How would I convince the locals to drink wine though? Maybe elmo has some advice on that?

Probably I'd have to serve cheese with it and then those damn colombians would drop it into their wine : )

ok so I went into a place called the wine store near zona t, and what a surprise, they had a great selection of wine. I only really know argentine stuff but they had lots.

It was all a bit pricey, but not horrendous.

I was very surprised to see they did have Achaval Ferrer malbec, I think it was 80,000 COP? Not cheap, but at least they have it. They also had a lot of catena zapata, and even Luca which is quite a boutique winery (related to catena)

There was so much I can't even recall it all, but I have their card and will try to remember to post their email address, they told me they had a catalog they would email me.

So now when are restaurants going to start carrying all this?

Wine?

Now, I'm not gonna telling you about French wines ;-)

The Italians haves some mean wines too (try a Barolo)
So have the Spaniards (Try a genuine Rioja)
The gringos even managed to grow our Cabernet Sauvigon in California and presently produce some excellent wines. I'm not familiar as to the quality of their Chardonnay (white wine) though.

I must admit to not really wishing to drink wine whist in Colombia (O tempora! O mores!). I recently invited some friends at the "La Cueva" restaurant in Barranquilla (very over-priced, but very famous because this where Gabriel Garcia Márquez hung around with his friends). I ordered a red Chilean wine (60K COP) which, amazingly, was superb.

From what I tasted on that day, I'd say that Chilean wines are certainly worth a try! Let's concentrate on South American products, right?!

no reason to pay up for french and italian wine, good as it is, when the SA version can be as good (at the lower and middle end, better in fact)

too bad taxes seem to be so high on wine in colombia, as I hear they are in Brazil as well. Not like these countries are protecting their own industry...it´s a bit odd.

If i could get a bottle of AF Malbec or a carmenere for $20 in a bar or restaurant in Colombia I´d really have everything I need
