PBH / off topic: do your thing (travelguide, pictures) / post

What music are you listening to?

this is Manu Chao, french I was told, but sings in spanish, english and french.

I don't like the whole album (La Radiolina), but a few cuts are really good, this is my favourite: "me llaman calle"

Lately I'm listening to a lot of Jean Carlos Centeno (vallenato). It's not new, but it's new to me. "Ayer y Hoy" and "Nina Bonita" are the ones I have on permanent repeat.

I'm not a huge fan otherwise, but Sting's live concert from his home in Tuscany the night of 9/11/2001 has been on my playlist at or near the top since it came out. Incredible group of international musicians. In the video recorded of the concert, he and Cheb Mami did an absolutely fantastic version of Desert Rose that didn't make it to the CD. Do yourself a favor and listen to this version of Roxanne through, before you dismiss it. Very jazzy, sophisticated version of his old standard....

I've been listening to a lot of Cuban stuff from the stockpile I got while in Cali. Ruben Blades, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Los Van Van, Compay Segundo, etc.

Buena Vista Social Club has been overplayed in every coffee shop. But I absolutely love this song about a tree that gives a flower to a girl who carves sweet nothings in its trunk.

Remember this one? Love it!!! (1969) very popular all over Europe
In 1968 Gainsbourg had written "Je t'aime, moi non plus", an explicitly erotic song which he had recorded with Brigitte Bardot. After the pair's relationship had ended, Bardot begged Gainsbourg not to release the recording as a single and Gainsbourg, the perfect gentleman, respected her wishes. However, in 1969 Jane recorded the notorious song as a duet with Gainsbourg and it appeared on the pair's joint album "Jane Birkin Serge Gainsbourg".

When "Je t'aime moi non plus" was released as a single later that year it caused an absolute scandal. Indeed, Gainsbourg's erotic lyrics and Jane's passionate whispering totally outraged public opinion. The international press attacked the song's "lewd" message, radios banned it from their playlists and the Vatican went so far as to issue a statement condemning the immoral nature of the song. In short, "Je t'aime moi non plus" benefited from a huge amount of free publicity and rocketed straight to the top of the charts, selling around a million copies in the space of just a few months. Needless to say, Gainsbourg and Birkin became the most scandalous couple of the year and their relationship became the subject of intense media scrutiny. (less)

I went to highschool with a guy who was fairly quiet, nice guy, bit odd looking, bit of a druggie I'd guess.

Years later I found out he was playing guitar in Iggy's band, that he was outrageous on stage, and then he married a Penthouse Pet.

Who woulda thunk it? I think he was the most successful of my highschool class : )

He was pretty damn good.
