End Whale & Dolphin Slaughter in the Faroe Islands!Target:Prime Minister Jóannes EidesgaardSponsored by: John KoehlerWhales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound capacity to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans.

Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The exhausted, terrified and confused whales are eventually driven into the shallows. Here the bloodbath begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed. The blood-stained bay is soon filled with horribly mutilated and dying whales.

The Faroese celebrate the butchery of their victims in an carnival atmosphere of entertainment. Indoctrinated from an early age, children are often given a day off school to watch the fun. They run down to the bay and clamber over the carcasses of slaughtered whales.

Every year around 2,000 whales are driven ashore and cruelly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands, mid-way between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. For centuries the Faroe Islanders have hunted pilot whales, driving entire schools into killing bays, where they are speared or gaffed from boats, dragged ashore and butchered with knives. Although the Islands are a protectorate of Denmark, they have their own Government and regulations governing the pilot whale hunt or "grind" as it is known.

Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.

The drive hunt is a practice abandoned elsewhere many decades ago, and now outlawed by other European states. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands have no subsistence need for whale meat, and much of the flesh is left to rot and be dumped; it cannot be exported, as it is polluted with heavy metals and other toxins and therefore cannot meet EU heath standards for human food.

According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).

that happens on a godawful barren rock of anisland in the North Atlantic where nothing grows and the scarce population have lived off the sea /fishing, whaling) from the times the first longships arrived at the rocky shores a thousand years ago. There's nothing else to eat there. The winters are long and cold, the summer is short and chilly, it's hard and demanding life. Take a trip to Färo Islands, Monpirri, live there for a year and you'll find out just how harsh their lives are.

How about innocent cows being slaughtered in cold blood in the slaughterhouses? Or deer being hunted for food inthe deep forests? Or chicken having their necks wrung?

SUre, they could fly in all the food for thousands of miles from the continent in bimotor planes. Very economical, very sustainable.

Why? They've provided for themselves all these years before. They are not asking for handouts. They've been sea people, whalers, fishers, sailors all through their history. Norwegians hunt seals and whales too, but since Norwegians are now pumping all that oil from the North Sea their economy is much better, they're in fact one of the wealthiest people in Europe and don't need to kill all the cute little seals any longer.

Barbaric? It's rough life but I don't see it specially barbaric. I think Colombia is more barbaric, they kill people and plant land mines instead. That's what I consider barbaric.

The Faroes and the European Union
As explicitly asserted by both Rome treaties, the Faroe Islands are not part of the European Union. Moreover, a protocol to the treaty of accession of Denmark to the European Communities stipulates that Danish nationals residing in the Faroe Islands are not to be considered as Danish nationals within the meaning of the treaties. Hence, Danish people living in the Faroes are not citizens of the European Union (other EU nationals living there remain EU citizens). The Faroes are not covered by the Schengen free movement agreement, but there are no border checks when travelling between the Faroes and any Schengen country since the Faroes are part of the Nordic Passport Union since 1966 and since 2001 there are no border checks between the Nordic and the rest of the Schengen area as part of the Schengen agreement.

From the same source:

Whaling in the Faroe Islands has been practised since at least the tenth century.[1] It is regulated by Faroese authorities but not by the International Whaling Commission as there are disagreements about the Commission's competency for small cetaceans[2][3]. Around 950 Long-finned Pilot Whales (Globicephala melaena) are killed annually, mainly during the summer. The hunts, called "grindadráp" in Faroese, are non-commercial and are organised on a community level; anyone can participate. The hunters first surround the pilot whales with a wide semi-circle of boats. The boats then drive the pilot whales slowly into a bay or to the bottom of a fjord.

Most Faroese consider the hunt an important part of their culture and history. Animal-rights groups criticize the hunt as being cruel and unnecessary,[4] [5] while the hunters claim in return that most journalists do not exhibit sufficient knowledge of the catch methods or its economic significance.[6]

"In 2006 unemployment declined to 3%, one of the lowest rates in Europe.
Petroleum found close to the Faroese area gives hope for deposits in the immediate area, which may provide a basis for sustained economic prosperity."

It looks to me that the Faroese Islands have a pretty good economy and perhaps they have a better economy that some countries in Latin America.
No wonder "They are not asking for handouts." Are they trying to become billionaires after killing and selling and trading all the whales that reach their shores, wow that's pretty lucrative business.

Desi, no matter how colorful you paint the slaughter, their motivation and the whole process is barbaric.

I believe the annual whaling event in Faero Islands has been "painted colourfully enough" by the scandalous pics you have posted.

Oh, I'm sure that they have a better economy than some third world countries that are struggling. There are just about 50 000 of them, descendants of Vikings, Irish sheepfarmers and an occasional Englishman. Their economy is heavily based on fishing and whaling; it's good if they can start diversifying a little. Anyway, this whaling event the pictures are showing happens ONCE a year. It's not like they were out there butchering whales every day up to their neck in blood.

There are many barbaric, cruel things in the world. My heart cries more for the maimed children of Colombia, victims of landmines, the displaced families roaming the streets of Colombian cities, with babes in their arms, looking for a place to bed the children in parks and public places than for some whales that are killed and eaten in North Atlantic.

Murdering whales sure seems to be an entertaining show in Europe…looks like they got a good turnout for this year's event

It appears however that God has already figured out a punishment for these barbaric people:

"Danish researchers have discovered that people in Faroe Islands [situated between Norway and Iceland] in the North Atlantic who eat whale meat have high levels of polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in their blood. They are particularly worried that the pollutant has spread globally.

“This pollution is a new health concern for the Faroese and many populations worldwide,? said an environmental health researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Southern Denmark."
