You have to give due credit: Elmo is sure a master of deception!
Reading through his posts here on PBH, you’d NEARLY believe that he’d love Barranquilla and even Colombia as a country…
Unfortunately, that is FAR from reality.
Although Elmo was born there, the fact is he simply HATES Colombia and Barranquilla.
Perhaps this is due to the fact that that life was so tough for him whilst he lived there.
To be fair, Elmo never tried to hide this fact: As he regularly wrote on other forums, here is what he really thinks about Colombia – in his own words:
“Guys, all kidding aside, to me the US of A is the greatest invention since sliced bread, no one even come closes. Even will all them crackers down south still the greatest nation on earth.
You know (but please don’t let them know) I can’t stand Colombians. man those people rub me the wrong fokin way.
All my life I hated them modefoques, maybe the chit I went thru as a wayuu kid while living there left me with some nasty deep scars.
Thank you’s.”
The truth is that is his ongoing priority was to leave this lousy country (Colombia) which never gave him any opportunity. To his credit, Elmo successfully managed the change. He ended up as a successful TV executive in New York, never giving a second thought to Colombia which he then never visited in over 20 years.
Needless to say, Elmo never cleaned toilets in his life. That lie provided a nice “popular” background which, up to this day, he successfully exploited as the need arose.
So, now at age 70+, it’s normal for Elmo to suffer from an existentialist problem: Should he forget about his very roots (which he denied for so long) or should he concentrate on his successful life in NYC? Or should he go for a fantasy?
Needless to say, it’s easier to pretend otherwise on PBH. He loves to pretend he is a genuine Colombian (although he is more of tourist in Colombia than you or me). He loves to pretend he visit the “poor” barrios of Barranquilla whilst, at the same time, he actually only stays in the most expensive hotels of the city. He loves to pretend to be “one of the boys” in Barranquilla, a city he has always rejected since the city also rejected him as a child.
At age 70, I feel sorry for him. He is utterly lost for his roots.
He always rejected Colombia but, at the same time, PBH provides him a cheap forum to have a last stand as to what he missed in his life. Some cheap thrills in which he doesn’t really believe.
Sorry Elmo, your life is squarely in NYC. Whatever your original roots, you’ll always remain a tourist in Colombia - however much Old Parr you claim to drink…
But you thoroughly remain entertaining if only because you’re the mirror of what we MIGHT wish to be in an ideal world…
