Swedish vodka maker Absolut

Wonder if they can sell enough in Mexico to make up for the difference in lost revenue from the United States as a result of this ad?

MT you may have misjudged the ramafications of the ad. But; lets just wait and see if there are any effects on sales in the States.

i do know it is quiclkly getting circulated around via the internet. As you probably know the subject only needs another match to set it off.

This is one we won't have to speculate about. Lets check on their US profits next year.

I don't doubt that the usual suspects will whip up the same hysteria they did over Freedom Fries and other important issues. There will be lots of free publicity. The company will apologize. A few Latinos will buy a little more Absolut. Some folks will buy less. Most won't care.

As you say, the proof is in the pudding. Return to this thread in a year's time. I bet sales reflect current trends.

There may be something deeper going on.........Pernod Ricard a huge french liquor conglomerate bought Absolute last month from the govt of Sweden. The leadership of the liqour business in the world has been new world order all along.

The french and the mexicans have been quite antagonistic over the centuries so this may be some kind of a kiss and make up. although i don't think we will see any ads showing Spain dominating Mexico ....................................or Germany with France within its borders during WWI and WWII.

Absolute was one of the first companies to do aggressive gay marketing more than 30 years ago.

Sales were $1.5 billion last year.............this is a drop in the bucket against the total sales of Pernod.

Yeah, Absolut apologized. It made my local news rag too.

As I recall Benetton used to apologize for "outrageous" ads on a regular basis.

Absolut ran the ad to increase their sales in Mexico. They have nothing to gain by not apologizing. Maybe they are worried about taking a hit from the Internet arch-conservatives. Just as likely a planned withdrawal knowing it would win them publicity. Apologies cost nothing, companies do it all the time these days.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The distillers of Sweden's Absolut vodka have withdrawn an advertisement run in Mexico that angered many U.S. citizens by idealizing an early 19th century map showing chunks of the United States as Mexican.

The billboard ad has the slogan "In an Absolut World" slapped over a pre-1848 map showing California, Arizona and other U.S. states as Mexican territory. Those states were carved out of what had been Mexican lands until that year.

Although it was not shown in the United States, U.S. media outlets picked up on the ad, and after a barrage of complaints, Absolut's maker said on Sunday the ad campaign would cease.

Defending the campaign last week, Absolut maker Vin & Spirit said the ad was created "with a Mexican sensibility" and was not meant for the U.S. market.

"In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues," a spokeswoman wrote on Absolut's Web site.

"Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal," she wrote.

Absolut's blog cite has received more than a thousand comments since the ad campaign was launched a few weeks ago, with many calling for boycotts of the Swedish company.

"I have poured the remainder of my Absolut bottles down the sink," one blogger wrote.

A war between Mexico and the United States from 1846 to 1848 started with Mexico's refusal to recognize the U.S. annexation of Texas and ended with the occupation of Mexico City by U.S. troops.

At the end, Mexico ceded nearly half of its territory to the United States, forming the states of California, Nevada, Utah and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Mexicans remain sensitive about the loss and the location of the border. At the same time, the United States is fortifying barriers to keep out undocumented Mexican migrants.

Some Mexicans use the term "Reconquista" (reconquest) to refer to the growing presence in California of Mexican migrants and their descendants.

France's Pernod Ricard is taking over Absolut vodka, one of the world's top-selling spirit brands, after buying Vin & Spirit from the Swedish government at the end of March.

The original ad is manipulative, since it was made for the Mexican market. I don't get excited by cheap attempts to upset me. I'll concede your Israel map would upset more folks; largely since it remains a hot button issue today. There may be controversies regarding immigration, but no one is seriously suggesting California and New Mexico are, in this day and age, not American.

It was not witty or funny at the beginning of the thread either. Was it the Absolut Conspiracy thing that has you so hot and bothered? Your hatred of the centralization policies of Santa Anna?

I don't drink a lot of vodka, but this wouldn't change my habits. Most other folks don't care much either. Nothing more than an ad campaign in poor taste, and frankly, those already exist in spades.

As said, the future will prove no one else cares much either -- sales and stock price speak.

most of the drugs coming into the u.s. come across that border.

i could go on and on about all the grief suffered by both sides in this highly controversial border.

no matter what side your on in this solemn issue, there has been a lot of heartache and misery on both sides.

i really don't care what you think.......it's a wide open website..........but if you're going to disrespect one of the most unfunny chapters in american history since the indians.............then you're going to have a barracuda up your ass, pal.

The ad that was run was a tongue-in-cheek reference to what is now ancient history. The map you made makes reference to a current and ongoing conflict with daily casualties. In the first instance the conflict is long settled except in the imaginations of lunatics and fanatics. The second, while involving fanatics, is neither imaginary nor over. It is unbelievable to me that anyone could not understand theses distinctions or their significance.

gringoloid says on Apr 8, 2008, 22:38:

plain and simple, no matter what side you're on in this issue, mexican or american, the absolute ad was inflammatory at a time when we're trying to find a solution to this ghastly problem that has existed for 150 years.

i lived 100 miles away from the border for 8 years and saw the grief first hand.

For a company that is trying to acquire a bigger market share, I thought the ad was stupid, disrespectful, reckless, and hateful.

I live in colombia..........I could care less if the border stays or goes, i'm only talking about callousness to a very sad situation.

You're welcome to care as litlte about what I think as you want. I certainly am having a hard time respecting your thinking. As far as I'm concerned it's utterly ridiculous to equate the border issues of today - however serious they may be - with the issues of sovereign territory which were settled in the 19th century and are what were being referenced in the ad. Indeed, far more important things to worry about.

"The great thing about human language is that it prevents us from sticking to the matter at hand."

"In the first instance the conflict is long settled"

I know you southerners aren't as mentally evolved as the rest of us, but do you read a newspaper? Know what a newspaper is? I don't live in the U.S. but there must be something on everyday about the illegal immigration into the states.

I made many trips to mexico while living in so cal; not one time when crossing the border either way, did i not see some kind of conflict of 20 or 30 mexicans barging across the border. I understand it is much worse now.

Suggesting that the ad was intended as anything anything other than tongue-in-cheek is laughable, to say the least. I believe the point I made regarding historical distinction and perspective was pretty clear and you have failed to see it, or chosen to ignore it. A roughly equivelent ad would be to run in England a map which showed, oh, say, those pesky American colonies as still part of The Empire. The ad was run in Mexico because it would be Mexicans who might get the warmest chuckle from it. Someone has to explain that to you?!? They apolgized because people complained and that was the easiest way for them to exit. Big deal. FYI, corporations will not apologize in an instance where it might create a legal liabilty, to answer a question you asked previously. Yes, humor is a funny thing. "Is it wise for a global beverage company to pander to radical politics while alienating a much wider consumer base?

Absolut, the Swedish-owned vodka maker, apparently drinks to that. Last week, my e-mailbox lit up with messages from readers and bloggers about a new Absolut ad catering to Mexican drinkers who believe the American Southwest belongs to them. (That extreme ethno-supremacist idea, of course, is not news to anyone who has paid attention to the massive illegal alien marches of the past two years — where “This is our continent, not yours has been a rallying mainstay.)"

bramacellist................your responses are what's 'laughable', followed by 'debate cowardice' in running from my responses.

1. Quote: "I believe the point I made regarding historical distinction and perspective was pretty clear and you have failed to see it, or chosen to ignore it."

i countered this point with the exact same historical distinction and perspective that you proposed with an absolut concept map of German occupation of France during WW1 and WW2 , a conflict that is resolved. it's pretty clear there would be some french people still alive that would consider an ad like that an insult and in fact could involve arrests of the ad agency under the european holocaust laws. Now if you don't answer this challenge it's pretty clear that you've failed to see it, or chosen to ignore it.

2. Quote: "A roughly equivelent ad would be to run in England a map which showed, oh, say, those pesky American colonies as still part of The Empire."

Wrong again. Thousands of englishmen are not illegally crossing the ocean to enter the U. S. on a somewhat daily basis. Currently England makes no claim to any part of the U.S., as some radical mexican groups do. there is an enormous economic strain placed upon the u.s. by illegal mexican immigration; i know of no such financial strain by englishmen on america. Your map is not 'topical' as absolut ads have been for 30 years, so your map does not incite either for or against, therefore, no comparison.

3. Quote: "The ad was run in Mexico because it would be Mexicans who might get the warmest chuckle from it. "

At the expense of whom? My issue right from the beginning was from an american standpoint, not the mexican reaction. Ads are for promoting interest in ones product for purposes of awareness and increasing sales. Of course the ad was favorable to a lot of the mexican population, and those that think like Blackbeard the Pirate. if you're saying that there were just slightly warmer chuckles in the u.s. please show me the evidence.

Will Absolut be making a Tibet/China map/ad to get a lot of 'chuckles' as you say, during the Olympics in Beijing this summer? If not, why not? If YOU owned Absolut, would you make an ad showing a separate tibet/china, or maybe a separate Quebec from Canada so that the Tibetans and Quebecans will have the 'warmest chuckles". If not, why not?

Maybe they should try to piss off everyone. The map from Risk with all the countries labelled Canada. Or a map from 2123 with all the countries invaded by the Ant People.

SKYY® Vodka, Made in the USA, Proudly Supports Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

America’s Most-Popular Domestic Vodka Decries Absolut® Vodka’s Suggestion to Redraw North American Map

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo officially ended the Mexican-America War (1846-1848). With the signing of this treaty, the United States gained control of what was to become the Golden West, including California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and parts of Colorado and New Mexico. Today, SKYY® Vodka, the number-one vodka produced in the United States, spoke out against suggestions by Absolut® Vodka to disregard that treaty, as well as the joining of Texas to the Union in 1845, as depicted in Absolut’s recent advertising.
