US Senator Max Baucus - By BETTY BRANNAN JAÉN for La Prensa - The US Senate will hold a hearing today on the bilateral Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Panama, even through the White House has not yet officially sent the treaty to Congress for ratification. The hearing was called by Senator Max Baucus who chairs the Finance Committee and who has declared his support for the agreement. New sources in Washington think that, by scheduling this hearing, Baucus is trying to press to start the ratification process. But a brewing controversy over Panama's presumed status as a "tax haven" has arisen as the most recent obstacle to the approval of the Free Trade Agreement.
