By the way, we're kindred spirits if you love this music. I love the 1950s and early 60s music - right before the flower child craze. America was so conservative.

Look at those people in the audience. They're such stiffs! I'd get up and start dancing and singing! Waving shots of guaro to Dion.

I guess the 7 CLub was a real classy place.

My wife and her family are Italian-Americans. My in-laws are in their 70s so this is their music. So when our families get together - we have the Italo-Colombo mob thing going on. Both families dance both kinds of music. The Italians adapt very easiliy as do Colombians. It's a good mix and we have a lot of fun. Aguardiente, Sambuca - it's all good!

Thank you. My parents met up in the States in the early 1960s so being from different regions didn't matter at all - just that they were Colombian and therefore had many things in common.

My mother was really festive and great dancer. She was a costeña party animal with all the craziness. She was hard to keep up with. Even my aunts till this day - in their 60s can dance people under the table. So Elmo is not the only Barranquillero around in New York City.

Plato says on Jul 13, 2008, 17:35:

You know, this got me thinking. Black folks in the United States gave us such great music, even the foundation of Rock and Roll with Elvis Presley, yet the Civil Rights movement was in 1964. We had Jim Crow laws in the South during the time of this music. Amazing that the US didn't have the civil right movement before this.

Now in defense of the United States, I argue that many countries, even Colombia, didn't have their Civil Rights-like movement of 1964. Their treatment of blacks is terrible. I have to say , England was ahead of the United States in the civil treatment of blacks. Am I correct?

Plato says on Jul 13, 2008, 16:42: flag

"By the way, my parents came to the United States at this time - 1961. So this is the music they were exposed to although they didn't understand a lick of English."

My wife claimed that she learned her English from the American music in the 60s (although she also studied), and I have a young Puerto Rican who also speaks perfect English, almost without accent. He claims he learned it watching television.

Hell, I have used computer learning tools, watch TV with Spanish sub-titles, had a tutor for a year, read la Prensa daily, and still can't really speak Spanish for shit.

Maybe just not too bright? jaja
