Ha, I'd like to know exactly how it was "accidentally" discharged.

It is impossible for a gun to spontaneously fire. The pilot probably accidentally touched the trigger, when he was dicking around with it. So, it might have been an accident, but an accident due to negligence, irresponsibility, and incompetence.

Unless he dropped the dang thing but even so, that alone should'nt be enough to fire the weapon, unless of course he had a round in the chamber. Either way, he was dicking around with it, not an "accidental" discharge....

I'm just surprised there wasn't a major problem...........firing guns on planes and boats can have a disastrous effect.

Yes, except a different type of round (soft-point bullet - I think it's called) is typically used on planes by the Federal Marshalls (and probably the pilots), less likely to penetrate walls, but very damaging when it strikes a human.

El Polo, even dropping the weapon wouldn't make it discharge. But even if it did, why would it be dropped unless he was dicking with it?

Any bullet carried in a common defense type of pistol, 9mm, 40sw, 45 auto, etc will be a hollow point. They do produce less penetration than a "hard ball", or full metal jacket round. But, any average pistol round could easily punch through the side of a plane. The myth is that a couple of small holes through a plane's skin would cause catastrophic consequences. That is not only not necessarily true, but very unlikely.

I had a bit to do with the UK Sky Marshals, or National Aircraft Protection Officers as they're grandly called, when they were set up in 2002.
The 9mm rounds used are soft point, but will punch through the fuselage of an aircraft. However, the hole is so small that it would make little or no difference to the aircraft's pressure. Even several holes, although the pilot would lose altitude as a precaution. So no one's going to get sucked out or anything. And the window glass is so thick that the round wouldn't penetrate.
