I was waiting to post this until the situation gelled more, but time grows short for everyone else to make plans, so I'll let you guys (specifically RJ and Morph) know now what the deal is.
When I moved Querencia to the boatyard for her electronic, etc upgrading in prep for heading south, I got a weird call from the yard owner. Seems some guy was inquiring about buying her, and wanted to talk to me. "I thought "yea right - some bozo w/ dreams of buying her for $2.43".
Still am not certain what the outcome will be, but he sent me a purchase agreement accompanied by a SUBSTANTIAL check for escrow. Color me shocked!
He named the number, since I told him "she's not actively for sale - but you're welcome to try." Both his number and his deposit check were, ummm, north of what I would have had a difficult time refusing.
I insisted that the treansaction close prior to 1/15, giving us plenty of time to continue trip planning, in the event he really turned out to be a bozo. He called from Rome on Monday, asking for additional time to close, since he's busy in Europe on biz. I promptly refused. He came back with "I'll make half my deposit non-refundable if you'll give me an extension". What coud I say to that - except yes? Free money, if he turns out to be a bozo- but I'm beginning to think he's for real.
So - that's where the trip to cartagena sits now. The new closing date is 2/7 - too late, I imagine, to replan for a February trip for all of us. But if the sale doesn't close, I'll revert to the original plan- sailing her south, prolly in March.
Sorry for the update delay- but i was expecting to explain my lack of communication w/ "I was a pendejo and thought a sale might happen". Now. I'm not so sure....

slguy says on Jan 17, 2008, 12:19: BTW- yea, curiosity is KILLING me! Why's this guy so hot for my boat? The truth is - I'm afraid to ask. ;) Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab |

houstongal says on Jan 17, 2008, 12:43: What great news slguy! What are you plans for the proceeds once the deal goes through? Is the guy European? Perhaps the favorable currency exchange piqued his interest in buying a boat. Culture is language and language is culture - Dr. Annamaria Napolitano |

slguy says on Jan 17, 2008, 12:59: Thanks for the kind words HG, but honestly- I've got mixed feelings about the whole thing. I've been working on Querencia for several years, getting her just like I want her. You know the old cliche? "the two happiest days in a boater's life are the days he buys the boat- and the day he sells her"? is crap. jajajajaja Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab |
|
slguy says on Jan 17, 2008, 13:01: if it was cassini, you could expect to see slguy at the helm in Cartagena, as per the original plan. ;) Tough enough to give her up, let alone to a frenchman. jajajajajajaja Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab |
|
houstongal says on Jan 17, 2008, 15:40: Slguy, I figured that you'd use the proceeds to buy another boat and property somewhere. You should take it. Yes, there's a lot of sweat equity in your baby, but there's also another boat out there that would be glad to have you working on her! Let it go, take the proceeds and start all over again! Dan says on Jan 17, 2008, 17:01: I agree with Pod... sell it. You can still get another one later on. It does sound odd that he's so eager to buy it ASAP. I hope it works out for you. God Bless America! |

Dan says on Jan 17, 2008, 17:52: yeah.. the housing market in California sucks right now. it'll still be some time before it recovers because there's so many people in foreclosure/bankrupcy, or about to. God Bless America! |

houstongal says on Jan 17, 2008, 21:07: Ugh...sorry to hear that there's still no nibble on your house GL. I know how much you're itching to put those proceeds into property in BsAs. But you never know.... Culture is language and language is culture - Dr. Annamaria Napolitano |

slguy says on Jan 17, 2008, 23:19: Boats and real estate are both passions. I'm always looking at both, whether or not I'm actively in the market. These days, only real estate offshore. slguy says on Jan 17, 2008, 23:28: weird currents in the ocean down down there. Currents and countercurrents flowing northbound and southbound off sudamerica's west coast. perfect for a sailor though - currents helping in both directions! The Galapagos are at the confluence of 5 distinct ocean currents - never saw such a thing before. Can you tell I've been thinking about this? jajajajaja Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab |

slguy says on Jan 18, 2008, 06:30: Morph, provided this deal goes thru, it won't be too long before the replacement for Querencia is southbund. Before hurricane season, barring more weird shit happening. Except with the next boat, it won't be hurry to Cartagena, it would be a more traditional island passage....first stop, Marina Hemingway, claro. From there, DR....Virgin Islands, etc. all the way south thru the canal. Lots of stops, spread over several months. I'll leave the boat periodically, then resume after work commitments get handled. You're always welcome. Sorry to disappoint this time. But don't worry - I don;t do well, boatless. Makes me nervous. Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab |
