Caruso-Cabrera: Tweak Your Platform, GOP

More evidence of what’s wrong with the Republican party emerged this week with the Mark Sanford scandal. If you haven’t heard, the governor of South Carolina disappeared to who knows where this past week. (Now he says he was not on the Appalachian Trail but in Argentina.) He didn’t tell his wife or his staff, which has lead to all kinds of speculation that he is A: Having an affair; B: Having a nervous breakdown.

If the answer is A, you can add it to the long list of hypocritical actions by self-righteous Republicans. Insert here Senator John Ensign recently having to apologize for an affair.

The Republican Party insists that "American values" must be a core part of the platform. Their values of course; and yet values that many of them don't adhere to. There are few crimes greater in America than hypocrisy.

Michelle's on the mark. It's time the party focused on fiscal issues.

If the Republican party would stick to what matters, fiscal issues, they would do a heck of a lot better at the polls. They wouldn't have to be worried about looking like hypocrites every time one of them has an affair, or when (gasp!) one of their unmarried daughters turns out to be gay or pregnant.

The Republican party platform should be one line long: We will stay out of your pocketbook and out of your private life.

But what did they do for the last eight years under President George Bush? They invaded both. Putting aside social issues, the Republicans spent money like drunken sailors. With a Republican party like that, who needs Democrats?

The Karl Roves of the world will say that I am naïve, that I don’t understand politics, that I come from one of the coasts where people are more socially liberal, that I don’t understand the Midwest, that you must use social issues like gay marriage to get the vote out, blah blah blah.

I disagree. It was a Democrat who said "It’s the economy, stupid." He was right.

Sanford to speak with reporters Wednesday at 2 p.m ET

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford did not spend the last five days hiking the Appalachian Trail -- as his staff indicated -- but instead was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he told The State newspaper.

Gov. Mark Sanford told The State newspaper he was surprised the story was attracting such attention.

Spotted returning from the trip at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, Wednesday morning, the Republican governor told The State he had considered hiking the Appalachian Trail after his state's busy legislative season ended but instead decided differently.

"I wanted to do something exotic. It's a great city," Sanford said, referring to Buenos Aires.

The governor will speak with reporters Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, his office announced.

Sanford's staff and family seemed to be in the dark about his whereabouts. Sanford also said no one else accompanied him, the paper reported. The Republican governor and possible 2012 contender told the newspaper only that he took a drive along the coastline on his trip.

Sanford told The State the legislative session was difficult for him, particularly losing the fight over whether he should accept $700 million in federal stimulus money he wanted lawmakers to spend on debt instead of urgent budget needs. Watch what Sanford said about this trip »

Sanford also said he hadn't planned to return until Thursday, but came back earlier after his chief of staff told him the story of his whereabouts was drawing widespread media attention.

Sanford expressed surprise that the story was attracting such attention, saying it's not unusual for him to take such trips.

"I would get out of the bubble I am in," he said, according to the paper.

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler said in a statement Wednesday it was the "height of irresponsibility for the governor to walk out on his solemn duty to the people of South Carolina.

S.C. governor trumped
"When it comes to the real needs and concerns of South Carolinians, Mark Sanford has been pretty much missing in action for the last six-and-a-half years. But it is not acceptable for him to be actually missing.

"However, as disturbing as it is to walk out on your responsibilities without telling anyone, what's more troubling is that the governor and his staff have been less than truthful about his whereabouts," the statement said.

Sanford's wife Jenny told CNN Tuesday she had not talked to her husband since he left last Thursday and did not know where he went.

"I am being a mom today. I have not heard from my husband. I am taking care of my children," she said outside the couple's beach home on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.

Following confusion over his whereabouts, a Sanford spokesman said Monday that the governor had been hiking along the Appalachian Trail.

A black Chevy Suburban believed to have been used by Sanford to leave town was spotted Tuesday in the parking lot of Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

CNN was alerted to its location by a law enforcement official.

The SUV was outfitted with blue police lights and two-way radio. A parking permit for the school attended by Sanford's children was on the windshield.

State Sen. Jake Knotts, a fellow Republican and adversary of Sanford, said South Carolina law enforcement officials informed him Saturday that the governor had taken a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division vehicle on Thursday and had not yet returned.

"I found out that he was taking frequent trips at odd times of the night in a SLED car with no security," Knotts said. "He would be driving. I got wind that he had taken another one of these types of capers last Thursday, and that nobody knew who he was with."

Knotts added that on Saturday, he "was getting wind that he had not shown back up and nobody knew where he was."

He said a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division official told him Monday that Sanford had not returned.

"He needs to transfer the power and let the lieutenant governor, which the constitution requires, let him be the person that makes the decisions." Knotts said.

"My concern was, 'Who would be in charge should an emergency arrive for the safety of the people and citizens of the state?'"

Lcacique says on Jun 25, 2009, 12:05:

He is a pathetic turd. Only partially because of the affair, but primarily for the way he planned it and the way he has handled it since it was discovered.

1) He is from the party of family values (I don't believe that for a second, it is a self-appointed title that is absolutely erroneous), and he takes off on father's day to have an affair. Nice.

2) He says that he truly had plans to go hiking on the Appalachian trail, come on...maybe months ago. The hike was used to mislead people.

3) His cover-up destination, the Appalachian trail, was a terrible choice that would have led to intense questioning if it were true given that he was allegedly going there during naked hiking day. Nope, nobody's going to ask any questions about why he left his kids on father's day to go hike naked with a bunch of Deliverance characters.

4) Did he actually believe he could just take off for six days without there being any concern?

5) Also, I love how he glorifies his friendship with the other woman by claiming that it began innocently with him giving her advice on the importance of staying with her husband. What a great counselor.

6) Then there is the fact that he was able to square his possible VP candidacy with his affair, not foreseeing how that may cause a few problems.

We could go on and on...

Last week a Republican friend and I were talking about Ensign's affair and he laughed and said "Thank God he was having an affair with a woman," and he seconded the sentiment last night after learning about this new scandal. I guess a same sex scandal is somehow worse. Why? I thought it was a myth that Republican's disapproved of homosexuality. Anyway, I found it interesting that my friend found relief in a man destroying his family and marriage simply because he was doing so with another woman.

Instead of going north, as to the North Carolina mountains, after all the stress about the budget, he went south, as many of us here have done, because of the stress of being up north. He went way south, and now he is paying mightily. Any bets on whether the relationship with the latina is actually totally off?

I never said that I know everything about his life and the things that I commented on do not give such an impression. I commented on simple facts that are well established as well as statements that he has made.

Do you want to address something specific?

1) Are you denying that he was gone over Father's Day with a woman he was having an affair with? He doesn't deny it.
2) In one breath he stated that he truly had plans to go on the trail; however, he later admits that he "created a fiction;" in other words, a lie to cover up the fact that he was going to Argentina. His words, not the media's.
3) It was naked hiking day; therefore, in my opinion, it was a bad choice for a decoy. You don't think any reporters are going to ask a governor why he decided to go hiking for six days while naked hiking day was being celebrated?
4) He stated that the relationship started innocently and claimed that he counseled her two stay with her husband. My opinion, he was a poor counselor. Please, feel free to disagree.
5) His email brags about how he was being considered for the VP. In my opinion, he was not thinking very clearly about his situation and was somewhat oblivious to the fact that his relationship may cause some problems politically down the road.

What a shocker, the man who is sooooooooooooooo quick to bash a lefty for sneezing is here downplaying an affair by a Republican. Ummm...HIPPO-crite. I, on the other hand, criticized Edwards when his scandal broke and did not attempt to downplay it by claiming that the media was misleading the public on the story.

I dislike your little buddy, mongo, because he also plays the same games as you; however, I respect that he said he would ignore me and - so far - he has done so. My point was not to disparage you in anyway, gringoloid. It was meant as a compliment. We have had arguments, resorted to name-calling on a few occasions, but more often than not our disagreements are pretty civil. I appreciate that. Likewise, my experience with billyb is the same. I can catch him in the middle of a debate where he is rather aggressive, present my opinion and/or question him, and he rarely if ever carries the anger over to our discussion. Rocco also disagrees with me on some issues, but he is respectful. None of you hunt me down only to leave empty comments like "blah, blah, blah, leftist manifesto..." or simply "BULLSHIT." If you disagree, you do your best to demonstrate why you think I am wrong or you show me where you disagree. I can respect that.
