WASHINGTON - Boeing Co. and Northrop Grumman Corp. will submit new offers for a disputed $35 billion Air Force tanker contract, and the Pentagon will pick a winner by the end of the year.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday that his office — not the Air Force — will oversee the competition between Boeing and the team of Northrop and Airbus parent European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co.

The plan, which hands control to the Pentagon acquisition chief John Young and sets up a dedicated source-selection committee, shows that senior civilians at the Defense Department have lost confidence in the Air Force's ability to manage the contract.

"I think it's better," said Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash. "No one has any faith in the Air Force."

The Government Accountability Office last month detailed "significant errors" the Air Force made in the original award to the Northrop team. The GAO said Chicago-based Boeing might have won the contract had the service not made mistakes in evaluating the bids.

that whole bs contract issue was full of 'payoff' holes. a contract like that given to some industry outside the united states? wtf....gimme a break.

it's like when municipalities by foreign cars for govt. use. fuck that. i don't give a damn if we have the worst cars on earth.. at least they're made here. screw supporting some other economy...we have enough workers...out of work.

amen to boing getting the contract. airbus can build planes for the euro union.

doc....sometime in the last year or so, there was a mishap with i think it was a B1B bomber loaded with 'hot' nukes. they weren't even supposed to be on the plane (according to the version i saw on the news???)

the dr. strangelove addendum was a take on 'hot' bombs in a strange scenerio (sp).

did that clear anything up? if not, next question.

oh doc. en re that paperwork (dav) they asked for dates of marriages and divorces in the past. shit! i remember doing that for marriage in colombia--i was living there at the time--and had an attorney buddy get copies of all that. since then--20 years ago--i have no clue where i've boxed those documents...sure hope i can find em, cause it's a trip getting all that info.
