I had two hard drives (IDE interface) which I needed to recover. One was from a recently deceased desk-top work station, and the other was from a WD external drive (which I had thought was crashed). The external drive had thousands of fotos.
Anyway, I found this little $24 gem (IDE to USB interface) from www.newegg.com, and was easily able to recover everything from both drives, although each took about an hour, running Vista.

The biggest technical challenges are:
Being able to physically remove the drive, and connect the obvious interface cables
Capability of copying a directory from one location to another.
