NBC Political Commentator Tim Russert Dead At Age 58 of Heart Attack

Tim Russert, the longtime host of NBC's Meet the Press and a best-selling author, has died of a heart attack at age 58.

Russert often moderated presidential debates and interviewed top govenment and political leaders on his Sunday morning show.

He collapsed on the job Friday at the network's Washington bureau, NBC said.

He hosted the long-running Sunday morning staple longer than anyone else.

"Tim had this incredible personallity that made people feel comfortable," said Wolf Blitzer of CNN.

Just recently, Time magazine had named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

The death was announced on the air by former NBC Nightly News achorman Tom Brokaw in an emotional voice.

Russert had just returned from Europe, where he had vacationed with his wife and his son, a recent college graduate.

He grew up in neighboring Buffalo NY which was 70 mlies up the road from my hometown in Erie, Pa. Our Communities shared a lot in common such as food, Industry, similiar immigrant groups(irish, german, polish, italian) lot of catholics, ethnic restaurants, weather. Later(70s-80s) I went to work on the US Corps of Engineers Dredge Ships which was based out of Buffalo so I got to know his city very well. We both were of the same generation(black&white TV era) so when he spoke about growing up in Blue Collar Buffalo and his Dad being a Garbage Man, I felt like he was talking about Typical everyday life in our city. He was a humble guy,,,

*****Don' Wait 'Til Retirement To Enjoy Life; Florida Teacher Dies Minutes After Retirement,Sad************
Reminds me of a Neighbor in my Hometown many years ago. He worked at the local GE Locomotive Factory and on his last day(fri) before starting retirement(mon) the Foreman asked him to work 4 hours OT. He puched out on the timeclock at 8pm after doing his 4 hr OT(had to grab that last bit of $$$) and upon arriving at his home and sitting down to eat Supper, he suffered a Massive Heart Attack and died at the Supper table. He slaved 40 years as a Welder doing Hard Work and never enjoyed one day of retirement. He didn't need the money, he had the first Dime he ever earned. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/554051.html

Mike to paraphrase what you said, the founder of my company, who gave away most of his fortunes in the early 20th century and he said he did it, “Because shrouds have no pockets.

I was a big Russert fan too, but in Panamá we get CNN, CBS, ABC (from WSEE in your hometown), but I miss NBC, MSNBC, or CNBC, but we get LOTSA FOX!

I know, like Murrow, Cronkite and others, he will be missed by many.
