Maths problem - What is my car's gas consumption rate?

Like most people I am watching the prices of petrol (gas) at the pumps and wondering if I should replace my present guzzler (A Kia Sportage Turbo Diesel) with something more economical. So I obtained the following statistics from my home budget software and tried to work out what mileages per gallon I have been achieving. This is what my research shows....but did I get the maths right?

Cost of petrol since acquisition of car = 3,062,011 Colombian pesos.

Car mileage since acquisition = 17,300 kms.

Present cost of diesel where I live in Colombia = 6,050 peso/gallon.

Say average price of diesel since car acquision in 2006 = 5,000 peso/gallon.

Thus, gallons consumed = 3,062,011/5,000 = 612 gallons.

Thus, average consumption = 17,300kms/612 gallons = 28.3 kms/gallon

Or in mileage terms = 17.4 miles/gallon.

At 1st sight this seems very low....but did I get my maths right?

Or is 17.4 miles/gallon a reasonable average for such a car which is mainly used for city usage?

Any thoughts from anyone?

The best thing to do is to completely fill your tank and reset your trip odometer. Drive for a few days following your normal patterns then fill your tank up again and note how many gallons it takes to refill it. Then simply look at your trip odometer and divide the miles it shows by the number of gallons it took to refill your tank. There is your mileage.

17.4 is probably not far off. Although KIAs are small, they are known for having atrocious gas mileage. My ex-wife had a Sorento for a while and it got worse gas mileage than my substantially larger 4Runner.

ColombianoGringo's advice is correct.

Your mileage math above is never going to be accurate because you don't know the per gallon cost of fuel and thus you're just guessing at gallons consumed.

What Liter engine do you have? City or Highway use? Is your car Standard or Auto? How many pounds of Air in your Tire? What Grade diesel are you using(cetane rating, its on the pump) All these influence milage on a diesel. If its (your motor)less then 2.4L which I suspect it is, that's pretty low mileage. I would think city mileage should be at least 25-28 mpg. My 1.9 VW Turbo Diesel 5 speed std(weighs in at around 3100 lbs) gets 37 mpg City, 55 mpg highway. On roadtrips I pump the tires up to 38-40 lbs and close the windows and lock it on cruise control at 55-60 mph. My Volvo Station wagon, Gasser, Auto 2.3L gets around 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and it weighs in at 3200 lbs. And its got the aerodynamics of a Brick. Your mileage seems way off, I would recheck those figures.

"". The cleaner 2.0 litre turbo diesel is available on all the trims in either 2WD on a four speed automatic gearbox or 4WD mated to a six speed manual gearbox with the former producing a ***healthy 35.3 mpg on a combined cycle*****, accelerates to 62mph in 15.1 seconds, top speed of 108mph and CO2 down at 215g/km. The latter is even more impressive despite its extra weight and achieves***** 39.8pmg**** on a combined cycle, reaches 62 mph in 12 seconds, has a top speed of 110 mph and CO2 emissions are just 187g/km. The 2.0 litre petrol engine is mated to the five speed manual gearbox on either the XE or XS trims and obviously achieves less mpg than the diesel as does the 2.7 litre V6 petrol only on the TITAN trim, 4WD and automatic gearbox but still pretty impressive covering 28.2 mpg on a combined cycle.""

Is that a mis-print?

15.1 seconds to reach 100 kph/62 mph?

i have a huge blazer with the big block engine and the milage is so bad--like 9 milper gal--i don't want to know. just starting it and warming it up uses about a gallon. it's terrible. my oldest son is the only one who ever fills it up...when he's down here from wash d.c. last week, $99.87 and rising. gimme a break. can't afford to change...way too much money in it and noone would buy it.
