They're most likely selling them for scrap. Copper wire is probably a bigger problem.

The lighting on The Centenario Bridge (across Panama Canal) went out a couple months ago because the power cables were stolen, and that wasn't the first occurance. A whole neigborhood went dark for the same reason, not long after that.

They also steal the covers for man holes, and sewers here. It seems that I have read of the same problem in Colombia.

Shit...thats at least $100,000 worth of scrap metal if they can sell it. They probably have to melt it down first. I hope they get caught.

amazing! i figured it was something like that.

whats that old saying..."if its not nailed down then its gone". guess this proves thats true.

i know that recently the big thig around here was thieves ripping coper tubing right out of the wals of newly constructed homes. one case the thieves went into a school and ripped off all the coper tubes, needless to say school was cancelled.

Yeah Scotty, same problem in Panamá, especially with the high price of copper. And "where are the cops?", maybe out selling scrap metal?

I was speaking with a local policeman here a few months ago who told me that a gang of 9 thieves were caught red-handed trying to dismantle a metal road bridge which crosses the Rio Jamundi at Mira Valle, near Cali.
They had actually managed to cut through one of the main girders with a thermal lance powered by a generator, when two police on a motorbike stumbled across them in the middle of the night.
