A females-only military unit was raised by the Russian Imperial Army in WWI. I believe they were called the "The Women's Legion of Death". Apparently they fought with considerable distinction against the Kaiser's forces on the Eastern Front.

A handful of them were seconded to the defence of the Winter Palace in 1917. When it fell to the Red Army, the women were summarily gang-raped.

That's an interesting bit of information, Kalder. Are you a history buff?

Of course, soldiers of both genders can meet that fate once taken captive.

Yes, I guess I am Portena. I studied it at university and have always had an interest in the subject.

Re 'battlefield rape'- I remember reading Norman Mailer's 'Ancient Evenings'. In which he devoted an entire chapter to describing how the conquering Egyptian army buggered their Hittite foes en masse.

I love to read, but when it comes to history I'm more into the history channel. I like the interviews with the individuals who shaped history, and I also like the old news films.
