The reason I did not post the videos is because after you post several on a single thread, they quit playing properly. They hang and get jerky. At least that has happened in the past, but I noticed CG posted the video. Thanks.

I agree, Robert is kind of sad these days. But I think he is a terribly underrated songwriter and guitarist (probably due to the makeup and hair).

The INXS video does not allow embedding otherwise I would post it, but I found a live version of it. It's not the greatest, but here it is:

Joey Tempest, born as Joakim Larsson on August 19th, 1963 in Upplands Vsby, Sweden. He is the vocalist and main songwriter in the Swedish hard rock band Europe. He has written hits like "The Final Countdown", "Rock the Night" and "Superstitious". Like many of the other Europe members, he grew up in Stockholm suburb Upplands Vsby. His biggest idols were Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin. During his teens, he played in a number of bands such as Made in Hong Kong and Roxanne. At that time he alternated between playing rhythm guitar and bass, in addition to lead vocals. In 1979 he formed the band Force, together with guitarist John Norum, drummer Tony Reno and bassist Peter Olsson. Three years later, Force had changed their name to Europe. Tempest played the keyboards on the first two Europe albums before the band decided to recruit keyboardist Mic Michaeli in April 1984. Interestingly enough, it was Michaeli who had lent Tempest the keyboard he used to compose the main keyboard riff in the song "The Final Countdown" years earlier. During a jam session in 1985, Michaeli and Tempest ended up co-writing the hit ballad "Carrie". Later that year, Tempest wrote the soundtrack for the Swedish youth movie On the Loose, as well as the song "Give A Helping Hand" for the benefit project Swedish Metal Aid. The song was produced by future bandmate Kee Marcello. One year later, Tempest wrote and produced the album One of a Kind for Tone Norum, John Norum's younger sister. Tempest also collaborated with John Norum on the single "We Will Be Strong" from Norum's album Face the Truth in 1992; This was the first time the two had worked together since Norum left Europe in November 1986. After Europe took a break in 1992, Tempest would release three solo albums. The first album, A Place to Call Home featured a guest appearance from John Norum on the song "Right to Respect". Several songs on the Joey Tempest album were co-written by Mic Michaeli. 2004 saw the release of Europe's latest studio album offering, Start from the Dark, featuring their classic Final Countdown band line-up with John Norum on guitar. Tempest is currently living in London with his wife Lisa Worthington.

It's really cool that you have diverse musical tastes, Kat1. I know way too many people that have a really limited range of stuff that they enjoy.

I like the additions, RJ. That album, After the Snow (I believe), by Modern English had some other good songs on it. I remember liking the song Someone's Calling.

RJ,

I actually had the displeasure of meeting those Modern English idiots while in college.

I was on the what was on a student board that was in charge of bringing concerts, etc. to our campus. It was cool because we got to bring bands we liked and got a huge budget from the University. The funny thing is that I joined because I was walking around the student center and saw this amazingly hot girl in their office. Of course, I walked into the office and feigned interest in the group as an excuse to meet her. It worked out well because I ended up getting the girl and the organization turned out to be a lot of fun. I actually ended up working in the music industry, but the two things aren't related.

In any case, I was not involved in bringing Modern English! However, I was asked to go pick them up at the airport as a favor to a buddy. These guys were absolute pricks. I made fun of them being one hit wonders the whole time and basically was a dick right back. The hilarious thing is that they ended up having to stay at a crappy Days Inn. Their show was even more pathetic. They sang Melt With You as the opening song, sang a handful of songs and then sang Melt With You again. The music industry can be a cruel thing and people like this get the sharp end of the stick.

I have learned that real superstars are often really nice and are usually a lot cooler than minor acts that feel the need to be assholes as if they have something to prove.

One of the greatest things about the 80's was the legendary punk scene that was a natural reaction to the mass produced, make up wearing and overly feminized studio bands that were typical at that time.

Behold one of my cities greatest gifts....Minor Threat. This was from sometime in the earyl 80's I was a kid but these guys are legendary.

Lcacique says on Jun 25, 2009, 14:31:

I grew up admiring the scene, not only the straight edge bands, but many of the kids that were doing the diy thing. Since you brought up Minor Threat and Washington DC, I might as well point out that I also liked Rites of Spring as well as the collaboration between Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat), Joe Lally, Guy Picciotto (Rites of Spring), and Brendan Canty (Rites of Spring) known as Fugazi. Also, Bad Brains were pretty huge for me as a young teen. Outside of Washington DC acts, I also enjoyed Big Black, the Descendents, Black Flag, the Minutemen, Sonic Youth, the Replacements, Hüsker Dü, the Dead Milkmen, Meat Puppets, Violent Femmes, Seven Seconds, TSOL, Bad Religion, The Angry Samoans, Green River, the Melvins, DOA, NomeansNo, etc. etc. etc. But - as I have said a million times - my tastes are all over the place.
