How to secure our borders?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24943229/

MONTERREY, Mexico - A car plowed into a bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others.

The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race Sunday, police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez said Monday.

A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.

Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing 37-year-old Alejandro Alvarez of Monterrey.

Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.

"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved,'' consulate spokesman Todd Huizinga said.

Ouch! A Picture is worth a 1000 words. A difficult task securing that border considering that 1000s of law abiding mexicans enter and return daily at that particular border crossing. And wait 'til more Mexican Truckers start driving their Big Rigs(18 wheelers) across the line as part of NAFTA. That's when the real carnage will start. Otherwise then placing adequate numbers of Border Patrol and Immigration agents at the border crossings and maybe Unmanned Aerial drones to relay info concerning illegal crossings, in this case, give all who are crossing a Breathalyzer test(an impossibility), hard to see what else could be done. He could have crossed into the US OK in a sober state, stopped at a Gas station and picked up a Six pak and/or stopped at a Roadhouse and gotten a Buzz. Hard to see what could have stopped this as driving and drinking is a big time practice in this part of the country. A tragicially sad case at the least.

"Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? That's interesting. I hadn't heard that." -- Feb. 28, 2008 --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C.
