HG...Cat Advice plz.

Ok so I am taking care of my brothers cat at my mum's house, while they all went away for a week.., I must admit I do like looking at cute cat's like her...but initially I didn't like to touch her and wash my hands every time I have to...but things are changing and after a couple of day's I think I we are bonding..instead of bolting like the first few times she seen me, she now comes up to me and rubs herself against me and purrs, and I have started to play with her and she lies on her back so I tickle her, so cute! And I now call her a special name (the one my sister in law invented is ridiculous!)

I am surprised at how she looks at me, do you get a "vibe" from your cat's (forgive the powwow style question) but I think she really likes me now, when I open the front door I say "Donde eshta mi bebechito lindo gatica hermosa venid donde la mama" and she comes running...

Ok so finally my question...is this the only cat that doesn't like milk?

Also I have been told under no circumstances to let her out the back garden, but she goes to the door and meows like mad...my sister in law told me that if I let her out she'll never come back but yesterday I let her out for a few minutes and then had a hell of a job catching her but maybe if I had have let her a bit longer she would have come back anyway?

Oops sorry about the length of this post.

mm! waht kind of cat is she mona? if shes a normal cat like black, or tabby, then you can let her out. But what I would do is put her food out the back on the door step. Then she will know she can go to that place to be fed, and she will keep coming back.

Not all cats like milk, so dont worry. She can just drink water...but she wont need a lot.

yes, i would say let her out. Black cats are very streetwise. But put food out with her too, so she will know to go back to the back door when shes hungry.

Mona,
I wouldn't let the cat out. It would just train the cat to want to go outside. Perhaps your sister-in-law is trying to turn it into an indoor cat. Indoor cats live much longer lives than outdoor cats. But it's hard to break them of the habit. Plus once outside, it could be very difficult for you to bring it back in. Why don't you pick up some toys to play with the cat? Feathers are fun. Anything to keep its attention.

I'm not surprised that you're bonding quite nicely! They do have lots of personality. I can read my cats .... know what kind of mood they're in. And gringolondinense is right, some cats don't like milk. I actually have one cat that is allergic. She throws up about a minute after drinking it. She's finally figured out that perhaps she shouldn't drink it anymore!

Enjoy the companionship with the kitty. Glad to hear you're turning into a catwoman! :-)

HG mi reina, monas cat is already meowing by the back door. I think she wants to go out....cats love to go out and hunt.

A few years back I moved house. Everyone told me, once I had moved house she would run away and id never see her again. But the first night she was meowing like mad, so i let her out. Then 3am...I heard her meowing again..she was back and she stayed ever since.

Sob..where are the kleenex?? :)

GL...I know it wants to go out, but you really shouldn't. My neighbors finally decided to keep their cats indoor after one was injured recently (probably hit by a car) after 5 years of being indoor/outdoor cats. Yes, it's difficult to listen to them beg to be let out, but it's much healthier for the cat to keep it inside.

I used to always let my cats out too, but I don't anymore. I had one that used to disappear for hours, sometimes days. I think she used to get stuck in people's garages. One day she disappeared and was found hiding under a lawnmower. Unfortunately she was found after my neighbor turned the mower on. She survived the ordeal with one leg needing to be amputated.

Plus I don't think Mona would want anything to happen to the cat if she let it out, especially since it isn't hers. Best to just keep it indoors and find things to play with it. Feathers, tin foil balls, etc. It can "hunt" inside where it's safe.

Gosh HG; your cat is lucky to survive that.

Yes, well all kinds of things can happen. One time, my cat went missing. I finally threw her things and cat bed away as I lost hope. Then 10 days after she went missing, she limped back home. Her leg was cut, like it had been in an animal trap. The poor thing.

houstongal says on Aug 30, 2007, 07:08:

I think the longest my cat went missing was a week. I swear she was stuck in a garage, but she wouldn't meow when I went looking for her.

Yeah, she was very lucky to survive. My vet thought she was a goner for sure when I brought her in (she didn't say it, but admitted it later). I was at the vet's morning, noon and night to spend some time with her. I think it really made her want to continue living. I always tell people to visit their pet at the vet as they recover from an illness or surgery that requires them to stay at the vet for an extended period of time. Don't just drop them off and pick them up when they're ready to go home. Frequent visits are good for the pet's soul...just like a person's soul.

I view milk as a treat. My cats love to wait for the leftover milk from my morning cereal (of course, only one can drink it as the other is allergic).

I used to loveeeeeeeeeeeeee cats........ When I was a kid my cat was a calico, indoor/outdoor, window was always left open for her... She was quite independent, coming and going as she pleased... Mind you she also wasn't always the friendlist cat.... She'd only let you pet her, IF she wanted to be petted.... But, one day, tragedy hit.... Hit by car...... $1,500 later.... She still went outside and had one more final accident... I no longer had a cat....

Anyway, so... I'd say keep the cat in, it's less stressful on you and the cat.... Besides, since apparently EVERYONE has left you alone, she can keep you warm....

But, now with my tender age, I've become like gabo.... Allergic to Cats!.... My eyes blow up like a blow fish!!!... It's dogs for me!....

a bath?! no, they don't need a bath. plus they'd claw you to death if you tried to bathe them. but you can use a damp washcloth and wipe her with it if you feel she's dirty. usually there's no need to do that b/c they are meticulous about cleaning.

how wonderful that she slept with you! she definitely likes ya!

Yeah mona, go try and put a cat in a bathtub with even a little bit of water in it! They're not keen in getting their paws wet.

I agree with MS....there's nothing like a purring cat. Or one that bumps its head on you or rubs against you.

Mona - Mine wakes me up at 5:30 by pawing my hair like she's brushing it. Or she misses the hair and paws my nose. Regardless, I get up and feed her. She's trained me well.

Must be some way of combining catnip and running water to make the experience less traumatic. Maybe you could put a big sign beside the tub saying "Cat Spa and Pilates Studio"?

She even closes her eyes and rests her little head on my wrist aww I am going to have trouble giving here back....

But HG, MS and Man T I will pass on the bathing tips...
