kalder says on Jan 20, 2008, 04:47:

I hope I'm not doing her a signal disservice, but as this is 'just' an anonymous web forum I'm just going to go right ahead and say this:

In my experience, people who make a full-on, breezy, super-confident and immediate social impact tend to be pie-crusts. They brush aside the usual norms of slowly getting to know people and whip up an intense, but inevitably shallow, fiesta through the strength of their driven personality. Then they simply burn out and move on.

Although I can easily believe a jealous husband might demand she stop logging on all the time, what earthly reason could stop her from typing an occasional hola?

Like everyone else, I loved having her here. And I agree with MT- she was witty and wise. And fun and charming. Too good to be true, you could say.

"kalder- have you ever had a woman?"--Sam Salmon

Man Tequila says on Jan 20, 2008, 09:52:

Well, if you want dime store psychoanalysis...

Although I agree with kalder that people with histrionic personalities burn out easily, I did not get that impression here. It is funny how over the Internet you get a biased view of people and know them better than some friends, and at the same time not at all. People make surprising judgements based on this narrow view. If La_Mona was "too good", she did not ask to be judged this way. And true? Well, who can say, but I find many people are more honest in what they write than what they say.

La_Mona spent a great deal of time on here, posting more than any other person here (and some folks seem to be on here 24/7). One cannot doubt her passion and knowledge of Colombia. Her social situation would seem to be unique, and PBH served a purpose for her when she felt isolated, which was frequent. But she did not post when on vacation, and I don't think the facts ultimately fit kalder's thesis. If misunderstanding was not an issue, why would she say she was unable to have normal friendly relationships with guys? Some people can fake charm, but it is a lot harder to fake wit or the love of a good time.

In fact, this thread, and please don't take this as morbid, is starting to sound like a eulogy.

MT makes a good point about her not posting when she was on vacation. I do believe that this was an addiction for her (as it is for many of us). We've developed a little community here and it's hard to let friends go gradually. Much easier to do so in one fell swoop, as she did.

I do hope this is a temporary thing and she'll return. She not only communicated with the guys, but with the women of PBH as well. We used to email each other frequently and I miss her friendship.

Billyb, please let us know if you hear from her.

With hangliding you have to run off a cliff.... I thought it would be more like that and my mom has a bad leg, so didn't want her to get injured.... Needless to say, I'll definately be doing it again and make sure she enjoys the adventure next time....

podborski says on Jan 24, 2008, 04:44:

hey man t! Well, I've been too busy to keep in touch with people, so lots happening. The 'quick' update:

Roof is finished, bottle of champagne finished same day. The 4th set of roofers were great, expensive, but great.

Carpentry is moving along, but everyone is going on vacation this month, that's the bottleneck right now. I am laying down the remaining hardwood floors myself. It's therapeutic.

Chairs, benches, tables, tv's all arrived. All the built in closets done.

Bad news: Mauro rode the not-yet-finished elevator up too fast and smashed it into the top of the shaft-3 week delay at least waiting for new parts. Hard to get mad at the guy, but his 10 seconds of not paying attention just cost me a small fortune, and more delays.

More bad news: The city decided to fire 2000 employess the week my building inspection was scheduled for. You can imagine the riot that caused. No idea when I can get it rescheduled, or even if the inspector we had lined up is still employed.

Worse: The air conditioning guys are going on vacation next week, so even if I get the inspection done, I still have to find new people to hook up the air.

Really good news: I have hired 3 great front desk/waitresses. They all speak english, are very outgoing, one is also a pastry chef, another a sommelier, and did I mention that they are attractive?(reminds of a certain Seinfeld episode but my preferences are slightly different) .

Also hired a well known chef, my only fear is he is more than I need, but he really wanted the job and seems to be understanding he won't get the support he had at his old place. My biggest challenge is getting him to simplify, his first suggested menu included foie gras and quail, I'm giving him a better idea of what I want now.

So, things are way ahead of where it was when you were here, but still lots to do. Looks like early March for the inauguration.

I really should be working right now...

Wish I had some time for a trip to Mexico, but it will have to wait. I'm thinking of trying to squeeze in a 3 or 4 day trip to Uruguay or Brazil though. Probably just wishful thinking : (

Enjoy your mexico trip!

When I left Toronto it was -17 degrees centigrade. I think I am enjoying the weather in Puerto Vallarta, but it will be a lot colder in Guanajuato.

I took a few months off to travel. I was going to go to Kenya but changed my plans for some reason. They needed a bit of emergency help at work so I went in for a few shifts. Also visited my family for another week or so. An opportunity arose to study Spanish in Mexico.

I've seen lots of days where the weather was -40. That cold, the Celsius and Farenheit scales are the same.

-40?????

I swear to god, it completely escapes me why anyone would choose to live in such a place. everyone is entitled to their lifestyle choices, of course - but I personally would rather dig ditches for a living in shirt sleeves than earn $500,000/year if the 500K required dealing with -40. gives me a raging headache, just imagining that kind of cold....

I dunno slguy. It felt quite cold this morning (-10 F), but you dress warmly and you're really not outside. Tonight it's probably 13 or so and we walked to dinner (2.5 blocks). At least the infamous Chicago wind isn't blowing, but some snow is coming down. It's quite pretty.

No kidding! I don't know where the smokers go anymore. They can't smoke in the restaurants. I haven't seen a smoker at all since coming here. Guess they're not smoking as much due to the cold!

I actually just found this tiny gay dive bar by my house... and they still smoke INSIDE the premises.... We left after a couple hours... It was like a hot box, I felt like I smoked a carton of cigs.... Came home and showered, had to get the smell off... Yuck!... Most likely not going back....
