Day of Thanks

I thought it would be appropriate to thank all of my wonderful friends on PBH on this day of thanks.

You've brought laughter in my work day and smiles late at night.

I'm grateful to have met 3 PBHers in person and looking forward to meeting more in the coming weeks.

And thanks to Peter for creating the Off Topic zone where we can post something like this without fear of being banished in PBH neverland.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Hell, I'm just happy to be alive and traveling hopefully through time and space, and connected to all of you.

A woman's husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she had stayed by his bedside every single day. One day, when he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer.
As she sat by him, he whispered, eyes full of tears, 'You know what? 'You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you stayed right here. When my health started failing, you were still by my side... You know what?'

'What dear?' she gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with warmth.

This is my second visit here. It's a big city with lots of terrible traffic. Apparently the pollution is bad this time of year, but I thought it was worse in February. I haven't even noticed the smell. Lots of great restaurants, the hotel is fab, Alejandro was awesome especially when the Mexicans were going nuts over him (and he is quite a looker....great arms and the women were screaming everytime the cameras panned his crotch!!!). I always thought it reminded me of Bogota in many respects.

CDawg - I don't think I would ordinarily visit if I didn't have to come here on business. The pyramids were cool to see. The museums and zoo is free on the weekends, but they also attract quite a number of people. I hope to escape work on Friday a little early to hit the anthropology museum as I hear it's quite good.

Colombiche. I'm actually in Naples - know it? Due west of Lauderdale, on the gulf of mexico, just south of Ft. Myers.

I don't wanna sound like the wannabe wise old man or anything- but I haven't done anything anyone else can't do- all it takes is developing contacts, a desire to do it- and not being afraid to fail. God knows, I've fallen on my face more than I'd ever admit, but I spent about 15 years working for other people, from Fortune 100 down to small mom'n'pops, and just never found a fit. I never was very good at taking orders from other people, even as a kid. ;)

You must have a massive rolodex (do people still use them? jajajajajaja) from your travels. Think about what you could do with them- that you'd like doing (this is the MAIN thing!). Then remember that toe you left in your sock. jjajajajajajjajaja I don't have to tell anyone here how small the world has become with technology. There are TONS of opportunites almost everywhere, if one keeps their eyes/ears open. Deals for international trading aren't THAT hard to find, and surprisingly, there're amazing numbers of ways to finance these deals, other than one's own pocket.

End of sermon. ;)

I'll wait until about February, when you lose two more toes, to make my employment pitch. jjajajajjaaj

slguy says on Nov 26, 2007, 20:44:

Which part, christo?

For the first, I'll give you a perfect example.

A number of years ago, I was visiting Costa Rica, celebrating my first anniversary. At the time, I was halfheartedly looking for a "safer"place to raise my kids. Anyway, I went to a seminar on being an expat in CR, and one of the speakers was a guy who was by trade a CPA, but like most good accountants, was really more a business consultant. He impressed me, so after the seminar broke up, I asked him if I could have some of his time that week. He readily agreed, and in the meeting, I asked him about biz opportunites in CR. He sent me to a buddy of his, who worked in government procurements, blah, blah, blah.

Readers Digest version is, I wound up being the first to import rice into CR, outside of government bidding, since they privatized the function at the US government's behest. At the time, I didn't know bulk rice from bulk taffy apples, so I made some phone calls to trade associations, and went to Texas for a week to get educated. As grace would have it, I met an old timer who knew more about raising and exporting rice than almost anyone in Texas, and the guy took me under his wing that week. I didn't need to be an expert- I just needed to sound credible.

The second time the importation negotiation came up, the big boys kicked my ass like a redheaded stepchild, because I snuck up on them the first time. BUT- I made some money that year, and went to CR every month to meet the ships, so I got to spend a lot of time there. This was before the great gringo invasion- prices and attitudes were still very cool. In fact, up until a couple years ago, I had a little beach place in Quepos, paid for by profits from that deal. Was kinda ironic, losing my hideout because of divorcing that same gal who was celebrating with me, that first trip. There's an obvious lesson in that, too! jajajajajjajaja

But the point is - it never hurts to ask questions, and expand your business network. The worst anyone can say is "Fok you!", right? You never know when/where opportunities can be dropped in your lap- unless you don't ask.

As to the finance part- I don't think I'll publish that here. ;) But drop me a PM, I'll be happy to explain some basics.

Jaja you 2. I am just feeling proud that Carolina, north or south, is being talked about on a Colombia site, even if it is just among the 3 of us. I bet our other friends here don't know, nor care, one state from the other.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

I will always remember the guy who called time out, when there was none left.... and what school he was from, but I won't remember his name..... He's a cousin of Billy Buckner, long distance, I think... jejje

slguy...naples, eh///what's that like. i'm stuck in lodi...(daytona beach) and there ain't nothin i'd like more than to attend that seminar on what to do next. i've had a busy life, worked everywhere, made money and lost it/spent it/or had it taken by the rodney king riots. now, with more age than youth, i would like a clue how to break outta this madness of little cash and use what i've learned over the years and travels. help?

Naples is basically Boca Raton West, Douglas. Understand the analogy? Know Boca? I'm only in Naples because my sons are. Living in the very nice house I thought I would die in, when I bought it. But that's cool- they have it, and I don't need it. I'd be perfectly content living on my sailboat, if I could find the right woman to share it with.

I have no real wisdom to impart, sorry. What little I know, I know from the same experiences you've had. I've lost at least as much as I've made over the years. Or pissed it away. Or got divorced once too often. Or, or, or......you get the picture.

I do know this. I worked in real estate (construction and development) most of my life. Even woke up one morning before I turned 30, and realized I was in 8-figure debt. Scared me crapless- but did I learn? jajajajjajajaja

I still build stuff sometimes - but never in the States. Too many headaches for the potential upside.

These days I'm into more immediate gratification, professionally. Buying and selling stuff internationally, for me, is fun. I always loved making the deals, more than managing a company or employees. So now I work solo, from wherever I am. Telephone and internet access is essentially all I need to operate. I have basically zero overhead. It's a pretty cool situation for me. I am looking to move south, soon. Prolly Bolivia. But Peru, Colombia, even back to Brasil would be possible - doesn't matter much. And because of the nature of what I do- virtually every penny I spend outside of my home is deductible, and legitimately so. Most of my operating capital/cash flow runs through my bank in Panama. As long as I do no business in Panama. I have no tax liability there- and their bank secrecy laws are pretty tight, absent charges of drug dealing and/or money laundering.

Contacts, and the ability to find stuff, is really all one needs to what I do. I rarely try to sell anything, although I have a pretty good sales background. I typically have my clients tell me what they need- then go find it.

Jesus. I ran my yap. sorry. feel free to pm me, if I haven't spilled ALL the beans already. jajajajaj

Awwww thx GS! I always loved that song.

Hey CK! Yes I did meet dePronto and her friend Gabo (not our Gabo). We spent Wednesday evening walking around Polanco, eating tacos, and just yapping away. Gabo is still in Buenos Aires, so perhaps I will meet him next weekend when I'm in BsAs?! Sometimes I think he's avoiding meeting PHBers in person......
