Cortisol and Stress

The last few weeks have been extremely stressful for me. I've been so busy, I couldn't get to the gym to work on my abs and lifts weights. Now I've put on some pounds (not much) and most of it went to the middle.

Does stress activate larger quantities of cortisol which eats away at muscle mass? I'm concerned about that too. Time to get back to training

Thanks!

kat, I'm guessing that VERY few women who look in the mirror and see what you see have major stress problems. ;)

I wouldn't worry Plato. It takes a long time to lose muscle mass in anything like significant amounts.

Being away from the gym makes us all feel guilty about ourselves, but you'll lose those few pounds in no time.

Like Kat, I go the gym 3 or 4 times a week. Take in a couple of hours' Krav Maga too. But being a confirmed boozer and trencherman I need to shift a good 20 pounds. I bet you like fine old chap.

Thanks Kalder.

(Krav Maga is awesome!) After one trains for so many years, you definetly feel the extra weight, no matter how slight. Plus I love drinking too.

In addition to TKD, I train in Combat Hapkido. The last couple of years, I've been doing more close-quarter and inside fighting with take-downs to handle bigs guys on the floor.

You're very committed Plato.
The best thing about KM is that you learn some very effective techniques, very quickly.

I walk a lot too Kat. Gyms are nice because the type of pricey 'health club' I use are very nice environments.

Yes, I plan to crossed-train in Krav Maga too.

Did you get to see the Human Weapon series? There was a segment on Krav Maga, in addition to Thai Boxing, Judo, and other various martial arts?

No, no I didn't. I'm not even sure we had the series over here. I'll look it up on YouTube.

Did I just write 'gyms are nice' because they 'are nice'?

That's it. Time to have a beer.

Cheers mate!

If it is not many pounds, you are worrying about your belly for nothing. Get back to the gym when you can.

Chronic stress can lead to weight gain, usually through unhealthy eating. I think the role of elevated cortisol is usually secondary to this and would not worry about it nor take Corti-Slim nor other supplements that purport to reduce cortisol levels to promote weight loss.

I drink a fair bit, but now I've switched to whisky and diet coke, not the nicest drink but fuck it, it gets me drunk, and its only has 35 kcals per glass. I exercise a couple of times a week, and contrary to you Plato I lose weight when I'm stressed out. I just forget to eat and stuff like that...

Between family, work, a side teaching gig, and grad school, I tell ya - I friggin' drink! Like right now. Listening to my vallenatos. (Carajo! Que rico!)

Just finished writing and submitting a research paper from hell. Damn that was tough! Coño! I was about to murder my professor earlier this week, but she knew I just about had it. We worked things out.
