concert of the century.....

a concert will be held tonight and tomorrow in minnesota's rainbow granite quarry, featuring the dance troup of merce cunningham who is 90 yrs old. cunningham, who worked for years with the contemporary composer, john cage, and the avante gardt pianist david tudor has worked for years to organize this concert.

the quarry is owned my martin marrietta-materials and who agreed to help with this avante gardte concert, without really having an idea what they were getting into. it resulted in the need to haul out one million tons of rock to clear the bottom of the quarry for the concert at a cost no one ever imagined.

there will be 150 musicians seated around the audience (concert in the round) and the dancers...well i don't know how they're doing their thing.

4,000 tickets were sold out in minutes for this event at $50.00 each. attendees are coming from all over the world.

it can be heard--audio--at 7:00 pm e.s.t. this evening, sept, 11th, 2008 on national public radio or on NPR.ORG. also tomorrow at the same time:

All Things Considered, September 11, 2008 · The Merce Cunningham Dance Company will present Ocean in Minnesota's Rainbow Granite Quarry Thursday and Friday.

It calls for 150 musicians to sit around the audience and has been performed only once before in its entirety.
