Muy Excellent Movie if you have not seen it yet...

If you had 6 months to live and you could do anything you wanted (unlimited resources) what 10 things would you do before you live to die another day?

Oh, I have so many things I want to do! But the most recent thing I've decided that I must do before dying, is be in DC for my favorite holiday (July 4th) and watch the fireworks and listen to the bands play at the national mall. That would be so much fun!

Hola TG - I lived in DC for a short term job - on Mass ave. I actually sub - let (or leased?) an apartment from a Colombiana, she had a bf from Nigeria. Yes that is quite an idea if I had the choice that is a great place to go to. But I think if I had only 6 months...I would just make my own 4th jaja on any given day UNO? - TG you should see the movie if you have not.....you will like it.

I´m sure you could dream up something better than visiting DC, after all, it´s just another big city, and what if you got 6 months to live from August?, you would say good bye before the 4th of July. I would LOVE to be a passenger in a f15, just like my friend Jeremy clarkson..

Hum...there are a handful of people in my life that I feel indebted to for their kindness and generosity over the years. I think I'd spend my time and this unlimited amount of resources on them, going and doing whatever it is they've always wanted to do.

TG - I've been in DC on the 4th of July and seen the fireworks on the National Mall at least twice (possibly 3 times...I can't recall) and they really are amazing. Crowded, but amazing. I can understand why it's on your list.

And seeing the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Washington monument and the Capitol building lit up at night are my favorite sites in DC. Always brings me chills when I fly over in the evening.

The movie is OK. I saw it on the airplane a couple of months ago. What's incredible is that the 2 actors (Nicholson and Freeman) didn't leave LA. All of those shots of exotic locales were faked.

Yes don't pass up any chance to see Cusco, Arequipa, and of course Machu Picchu!

I found that a private tour guide was worth the money at MP.

CatGirl says on Jul 13, 2008, 10:42:

jaja TG - BTW I understand what you are saying. Just so you know, there is a part in the movie where Morgan wanted to go to a very special mountain and he was told the weather would not clear up until "next spring" - since he had only a short time to do live, the story took another turn in relation to this. So I agree with you but if I was told 6 months now.....it would not be possible.

Yes, Huskie I agree.....in DC what was written on National Monuments was breathtaking. There is also a museum I think in the East Coast? Where you are given a person's life and you walk through there life through WWII - Halocaust....maybe someone knows. I would like to do this maybe a world tour of famous museums.

Sloopskipper, thanks for mentioning Arequipa as well. I loved that city. I also hired a guide at MP, but I think it would've been OK if I didn't. I had a guide at other Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley so the MP guide didn't give much more info. MP is truly a beautiful place and should be visited

cdawg, I would consider going by land; however, from several South American cities you can fly directly to Cuzco so it is not necessary to hit Lima.

While in Peru I would definitely spend time in the Inca capital of Cuzco, Arequipa, and I'd love to visit all of the surrounding ruins like Ollaytatambo, Pisac, etc.

It would be a shame to miss Lima, especially Plaza de Armas and Barranco.

What luck to be in Pisac for the anniversary celebration of Departmento Cusco.

Are you sure? I have heard that they are quite progressive, sloop...lol.

Of course, i would enjoy seeing Lima; however, if I was looking to save money...well, I'd rather see cuzco and the ruins in the area. But that may not be the case. I have tentative plans to go from Colombia all the way to Chile in a single trip. I have several friends in Chile that have been begging me to come and visit. So, we'll see. It might be a little difficult to fit it into my schedule, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. I also have opportunities to work in Colombia, so I have thought about doing that as a means of seeing more of Colombia and spending time with friends. Then, when i am ready to come back (if ever...) I could make the trip south first.

Peru is filled with places for a geek like me: Nasca lines, Cajamarca (were Atahualpa was captured by Pizarro. I'd like to visit the famous Cuarto del Rescate. I hear there are some nice hot springs in the area), Cumbemayo, las Ventanillas de Otuzco, La Huaca del Sol y La Huaca de la Luna, The mud citadel known as Chan Chan, Pachacamac, Puruchuco, Chavín de Huantar, La Ciudad de Trujillo, Cataratas del Gera, Sacsayhuaman, Tambomachay, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo, Museum of the Inquisition (Lima), etc. etc. etc. I'm jealous that many of you have had the opportunity to spend time there.

I wondered when I saw the flag flying on the municipal building in Cusco, but that rainbow flag is the bandera de Departmento de Cusco, jaja.

In 16 days I saw so much more of Perú than that I have of Colombia, so far, but what a marvelous country with SO much to see (and like Colombia, very nice people).

I stayed 5 days in Arequipa, instead a planned two because I suffered from el infermo de los gringos, and missed my 5 hour bus trip to Puno, and Lake Titicaca. From there was supposed to be an 8 (or more) hour bus trip across the Andes to Cusco. I had made a very tight schedule, so I had to fly from Arequipa to Cusco, and have a driver to The Sacred Valley.

I sure hope that you can get to enjoy it. There is even more to see in the north, and you can take a ferry across Titicaca to Bolivia.

"I'm jealous that many of you have had the opportunity to spend time there." You only need save your money, get old, and retire, LOL.

I went to see the movie story of Ché in "The Motorcycle Diaries", and four of us went to Perú, on three separate trips. Catch it on DVD. It's in Spanish, with English subtitles, but a great film (and music).

Sloop....geez you almost did the same trip that I did! I hit Lima, took the bus to Paracas, had a driver to Nazca (with stops in Pisco and Ica), bus ride to Arequipa (I also got sick there), bus to Colca Canyon and back to Arequipa, flew to Cusco, drove to Ollantaytambo and toured the Sacred Valley area for a couple of days, then the train to MP and eventually back to Cusco and Lima. All in 16 days as well and wished I had time to see Lake Titicaca. It just didn't fit my itinerary.

I also saw the Motorcycle Diaries before the trip, which does get you psyched to go.

Lcacique - You just have to go make the trip! Beautiful country. Fascinating history. All the Inca ruins are awesome (and there are lots to see).

HG, that is a coincidence.

An amiga in Puerto Rico went to Perú first, but she purchased an expensive package. I did all my own planning, including 5 hotels, 2 bus trips, and what should have been only 2 LAN flights. I had planned a few days on Margarita Island on my return, but ditched that and went back to Puerto Rico via Miami, to avoid Caracas.

I stayed three extra days in Lima because I enjoyed Barranco, and My Second Home Perú, so much:

Sloopskipper - I also planned the entire trip myself at about 1/3 the cost of a travel agency. I basically searched for itineraries for the number of days I was planning and they all looked essentially the same. I booked everything in advance ... thank goodness for the internet. I booked 9 hotels, 2 air trips, 1 bus trip, and multiple excursions, a guide and driver. You and I could be travel agents! :-)

I agree...I enjoyed Lima. You definitely stayed at a lovely place there.

Yes, I have not used a travel agent, for anything, in maybe 25 years.

I stayed at http://www.lacasademelgar.com/ which was a block from Santa Catalina in Arequipa. It cost $25US including breakfast in October 2005. It was very nice.

My first place was http://www.hostalelpatio.net/ in Miraflores and about the same price.

The hotel I reserved in Puno (but couldn't get to) was even nicer, and also inexpensive.
