Time to take advantage of all that free education and student loans to learn a skill that' viable in the modern economy because the competition is just starting to heat up.

US/European will not be the only industrialized nations in the wolrd any longer.

If UK is to remain competitive it needs as many of those foriegners that sacrifice thier lives just to send their kids to study in the UK as it can get. The spoilt lazy british that live rigth next to universities and don't studyare worthless .

"spoilt lazy british"

That's a spiteful little jeer.

But one typical enough of the liberal salons of Islington et al. You Marxists go all into a swoon over terrorists and bombers, but when it comes to actual members of the working class...oh, too, too frightful my dear...

no I come from a 'foriegner' family that sacrificed greatly to send their kids to the UK to study and were shocked at spoilt lazy British that don't take advantage of all the resources they have

try rereading the post kalder this is what the third time that I've said basically the same thing :)

I'm not ethnically British either. But I have an undying loyalty and gratitude to the nation which has given me everything I have.

Unlike those who come to take cynical advantage of our land and trash it, and its people, at every available opportunity.

And the reason we have such resources is, in large part, thanks to the sacrifices of the decent, patriotic working classes. Like the lads at Sellafield and Milford Haven. It's their labour and blood that built a land to which your family could eagerly abscond to from whatever benighted shithole you come from.

I love those paint strokes comments 'the British are Lazy' next you will be stating ´'My dad can beat up your dad'

While an air of the lazy stick has crept into British Society,a negative byproduct of our own generous Social Welfare programme , a sweeping statement that the British are lazy ,beggars believe, although your dubious comments hold a partial truth.I will tell you sir that the British in general are hard working salt of the earth types and your comments are intellectually flawed.

All societies have different levels of labour and Britain is not without exception,we all cannot be Doctors, lawyers or rocket scientists, some enjoy their lives without needing that type of intellectual stimulus or the capability ,that does not make them lazy sir

By the way ,the majority of British people make vast sacrifices for their families too, this is not a unique phenomenon,we can now go into the Monty Python Coal sketch...my dad used to get up a 3.00am in the morning walk 20 miles etc......

I never knew that you were so eloquent William. I´m stunned. Not bad for an old tin miner, eh?

Vladimiro,
I was born and bred in England, but I never lived next to any university. Not many people do. However, I did rip the arse out of the Comprehensive School system and find myself to be reasonably intelligent. Not everyone wants to study until they´re 27, only to leave uni with a phd so they can work at Macdonalds. Some of us decided on a different path - sometimes one which is more fulfilling and a damn sight harder than getting baggy knees and a shiny arse, sitting at a school desk.
Lazy? I think not. Spoilt? Hardly.
Having a choice and free will is what being British is all about, no? They should have taught you that at university.

And Kalder, aren´t Paddy´s (no offence - I just hate being PC as you know) British then? Celts, Gaels, etc are the original Brits aren´t they? They were known as the Brigantes because they worshipped Brigdha (now Saint Brigid), the Celtic earth mother. The Romans obviously had problems with the pronounciation and named the island Brittania.
We English are the usurpers and vagabonds who kicked your arses 1500 years ago, originating from Holland and Flanders. In fact, as Ireland was never really "conquered" as such, you´re probably the most British person on this thread.

What was the thread about anyway? Oh yeah, working class Brits striking. Good on them. Whilst I´m not a socialist on most issues, I am from a working class background and anyone who swings a huge size ten at this government deserves a pat on the back. Particularly when they yet again find themselves at the receiving end of the same shit that´s been going on since the industrial revolution.
Many foreigners in the UK aren´t aware of the horrendous conditions under which the Brits lived, worked, fought, and often died, in order to build the country - until fairly recently.

Yes, I do believe that the term 'British' was coined by the Romans. But it pretty much fell into disuse until it was revived as a catch-all for the Jocks and you Huns after the Act of Union. It's a label that the good part of my sainted forebears would have looked askance at.

Anyway it's good to see you chaps wading in...

I expect you're envying us our snow eh?

I don't sympasize with people just because they happened to have been born in the UK and don' see what's wrong with taking advantage of the virtually unlimitted educational opportunities available to them.

Less time at the pub - more time at the public library or local polytecnical institute and the problem is solved.

britabroad says on Feb 3, 2009, 12:31:

Your view of Brits has been tainted somewhere along the line. Hardly an educated viewpoint. The point you´re missing is that education - or further/higher education - doesn´t have to be seized upon just because it´s available. And, not having a university degree doesn´t make you thick, and having one doesn´t make you clever - as this post proves.
And there are many, many graduates in Britain who wish they hadn´t bothered because, despite their academic qualifications, they can´t get jobs and knowing your Shakespeare from your Homer doesn´t really stand for much in the real world. Anyway, Britain needs plumbers and electricians.

Kalder, what would you call yourself then? (Apart from a Jock who couldn´t swim) Eirish? Gaelic? Northern European? Ginger? (before you went grey) I´m genuinely interested. I believe that prior to the Romans England was called Albion, Scotland was called Alba, and Wales was called ´Land of the ugly woman´. Maybe Ireland had a similar name? (I can see where this one´s going)

Snow? Is it snowing there then? Oh yeah, it´s the only fucking thing that CNN are going on about 24/7. You´d think it had never snowed there before.
Mind you, it´s so hot here today (87°) that I fancy a bit of a naked snowball fight at the moment.

Do you think standing on the street like a begger blaming foriegners is going to get their jobs back?

...isn't time to think of alternatives like, uh, retraining?

britabroad says on Feb 3, 2009, 13:51:

Those men are strikers not beggars. They are carrying out a perfectly legal act known as picketing. People go on strike and picket when they have a greviance against their employers or the government, usually caused by them losing their jobs or because of worsening working conditions. They aren´t blaming foreigners for anything. They´re blaming their company for laying off British workers while taking on cheaper workers from Italy and Portugal (2 of the poorest nations in Europe), who will accept whatever working conditions they´re given for the chance of work. If a company in your country did the same thing the guys who lost their jobs would also be, understandably, pissed off.
Also, look at those two guys. How old do you think they are? 50? 55? 60? What sort of retraining are they going to undertake exactly? And if they did retrain, who´s going to employ them at their age?
It´s not the fact that foreigners have taken their jobs, although losing a job in the present climate is bad enough. Its the way in which it happened and the fact that the company chose to employ its own foreign workforce over them - a workforce which will accept lower wages, worse conditions, etc etc which in turn will fuck it up for everyone else.
And no, picketing probably won´t get their jobs back. But it does bring their position to the attention of others and allows them to vent their feelings.
I think that you lack a little experience. In ten years time, when you´ve been sacked, made redundant, treated like an arsehole by your boss, and ripped off by a few governments, you may have a different viewpoint.

In my field of software development they prefer to hire people under 40, which is not far off for me. But I'm not going to stand on the street like a begger with a 'don't send my progrmming job to india' sign:)

I prepare (by saving money, continuosly study, starting a side business, etc.), because I have atleast a basic understanding of the modern world.

The competition is only going toincrease for the UK and its people can't maintain its lifestyle with the loot it stole from its colonies any longer, they have to hit the books :)

Vlad,
I hear what you´re saying. Many people end up having to retrain etc at some point in their lives - me included. All I´m saying is that it isn´t always that easy. Some people hold manual jobs because they aren´t academically minded. Others have no formal skills to fall back on. And in the UK, as you probably know, 40 is over the hill for most jobs, unless you enjoy stacking shelves at Tescos.
I agree with your underlying point that people should help themselves before falling back on other people. But in this instance the point being made by the rest of us is that the company in question did a shit from a great height on its workforce at a time when they needed it the least, then rubbed some more shit in their faces by taking on cheaper labour from impoverished European countries, who signed up for worse working conditions, less pay, and God knows what else - negating basic working practices which are accepted as common place now, but which the British working classes had to fight tooth and nail for over the past 200 years.
Which pisses people off, and rightly so.
