I was on a Sam Peckinpah (a great director) kick recently. I watched the Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia and Straw Dogs. All of which I own and enjoy. Watching Straw Dogs, a brutal film, made me think of all of the wonderful films that Dustin Hoffman took part in during the 60s and 70s. What a range he displayed in films like The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, All of the Presidents Men, Lenny, Straight Time (underrated classic! starring Harry Dean Stanton: a personal favorite), Straw Dogs, etc.

I recently expanded my film library with two other classic films: Dog Day Afternoon (2-Disc version...I'm dying to watch the extras) and Chinatown.

My tastes are all over the board...foreign, comedy, classics, cult classics, drama, documentary...I love film. Therefore, I'm interested to see where this goes.

Hancock and the new Indiana Jones movie? They were actually pretty good in the beginning, but I walked out of both before the end.

The IJ movie had a seemingly endless chase scene that must have lasted 20 minutes. It was supposed to be 2 hours, but I left after that time and it was still going on and on.

But I'm not a big action fan.

La vie en Rose probably would not have broad appeal, but I loved it, as it reminded me of lovely times in Paris with my wife. We were both big fans.

It's French (very French) with subtitles.

Paulr - I loved Wall-E! What a great movie. I really loved the first half, before they left earth. The second half paled in comparison.

This summer I've also seen Sex and the City (good, but for some reason I felt sad the next day) and the Narnia Chronicles (still loved the first one better, but the story continues).

Looking forward to seeing the upcoming X-Files movie. Any X-Files fans out there???

houstongal: I enjoyed x-files when it first came out, but stopped watching a lot of television before it ended.

I haven't seen Wall E...I'll check it out.

tejas: All of the old Sergio Leone films are great: The Clint Trilogy (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly), as well as Once Upon a time in the West (w/ Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale and Jack Elam). For Clint I also love The Outlaw Josie Wales and High Plains Drifter. I thought for sure that you'd mention Zabriskie Point (with the Pink Floyd connection).

sloop: Never heard of it, but French subtitles do not keep me away from films. I'll have to read up on it. For French films, I like the work of the early masters Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and for more modern stuff I LOVE the films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet (i.e. Delicatessen, Amelie, City of Lost Children).

dwmte7: Nice! I love Black Orpheus. And 8 1/2 is excellent (I also love La Strada). I have never seen the Apu trilogy (but I remember reading about it...and the films were described as classics).

Perder es cuestión de método is a nice Colombia film (Sergio Cabrera: La estrategia del caracol, Ilona llega con la lluvia, Escalona, etc.).

How about City of God? The year it came out, I thought it was the best film. Gritty but beautiful to look at it.

A big time favorite of mine!

It led an amiga, two amigos, and me, to trek down from Puerto Rico to Perú!

There is an interview with him, in Cuba, and several others in the Extras.

The story is from a book Ché wrote.

well they ended up separating and cherie stayed in equador. she had two kids there from two different latinos. she went into the jungle in n.e. equador and, on both occassions, living alone, gave birth to the kids by herself, in the jungle surrounded by the indigenous head hunters there she's a very strange, very far out lady.

Marion Cotillard performance in La Vie en Rose was incredible....

The Black Knight is probably one of the best movies that Hollywood has produced in recent times.... Heath Ledger is magnetic every freakin' second he appears on screen!

Christopher Nolan is one talented MO-FO!

I've been watching a lot of movies from Mexico's golden era in cinema, 1960's. When story was KING!

Pedro Infante and Antonio Aguilar are GAWDS!

The "Pepe el Toro Trilogy" alone, starring Pedro Infante will haunt your soul, humanity at its worst and at its best, welcoming all sinners alike. The weak shall inherit the earth............

The young girl, Chachita is also very impressive throughout the series.

I highly recommend an underdiscovered little gem of a movie, "The Killer of Sheep" Shot in 1977 with a $10,000 budget while its director, Charles Burnett, was still in film school, this landmark urban drama sketches a vivid portrait of African-American life in the '70s. Depicting the Los Angeles ghetto of Watts through the eyes of a slaughterhouse worker (Henry G. Sanders), the movie's episodic vignettes and evocative soundtrack paint a picture of economic exclusion and muted hopes dusted with moments of transcendent joy.

I saw in La Prensa that it was being shown nearby, and that it was subtitled. Perfect!

But, it is a French film, and was subtitled in Spanish, jaja.

I knew something of her life and was able to read enough of the Spanish to follow it, although being very French, the chronology was all over the place.

I really enjoyed it, especially since Piaf and Paris were a part of our lives, and the closing scene, with her singing “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien " at L'Olympia, let me just say, really moved me.

Yep...pretty powerful stuff, romy...but it was the mother that really made me sick. I also found the film disturbing because I have seen several people swallowed up by meth...It's absolutely horrifying and disgusting.

Fight Club was excellent, written by a fellow PDXer.

If you want disturbing...check out Happiness by Todd Solondz...

I was responding to someone else, MaFe, but yes, The Godfather series is excellent. So is Miller's Crossing.

dwmte7, as a kid i enjoyed the Star Wars trilogy, 007 films, Animal House, Mad Max, a ton of John Wayne films like Red River, Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Searchers, Hatari, Big Jake, Sergio Leone flicks, all of the Pam Grier flicks from the 70s and other blaxploitation, classic kung fu movies, any of the old classic/cheesy horror/sci-fi/monster films (Godzilla, Invaders from Mars, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Soylent Green, Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.), Time Bandits, the Pink Panther series, The Gnome Mobile, Song of the South, The Jungle Book, 5000 Fingers of Doctor T, CoonSkin {Street Fight}, etc.

I am pretty proud of myself...when I heard that Steven Soderbergh was going to make a couple of films about Che Guevara, my friends and I began discussing who would play the role. Of course, García Bernal, though excellent in the Motorcycle Diaries, wouldn't be a wise choice for the rebel years. I predicted that Benicio would be chosen. For me it was obvious. I think he'll do an excellent job and Soderbergh is one of Hollywood's best directors (even if he makes fluff movies to unwind and rake in easy cash from time to time).

Anyway, there are two films in total: "The Argentine" and "Guerrilla." I am pretty sure that both are already wrapped up. It will be interesting to see how soon the second film will be released. The Argentine will focus on the Cuban Revolution and the second film will focus on Che's post-rev experiences in Africa and Bolivia.

I read an interesting interview where Soderbergh explained that the film received no US financial backing...hilarious.
