A mis 95.....

I am always utterly fascinated by older people and their life experiences..... I always try and get my grandmother to tell me about her youth and the tales of her life... But, I always get the "I don't remember answer"... I don't buy it, but I live with...

Anyway, I'm sure that some of you... have heard of this blogger... Maria Amelia.... Who lives in a remote region of Spain... and her blogs seem to be in Catalan... Anyway, I think that through her blogs she shows a strong character and a great view of life and shares some of the experiences that she's been through during her 95 years....

I also love the fact that she is currently fighting the phone company because she keeps telling them she needs broadband, but they don't carry it.... Reminds me of Colombia... you know issues with the service companies....

Maria Amelia says:
"Young men were different back then. They brought us flowers, gardenias, violets, chocolates. Not like the foul-mouthed bunch today."

I think it's cool... and if it brings her joy and extends her life even better.....

I'm sure GL and Morphus help keep the torch burning.

One thing that really dissapoints me about our society is the outlook we have on old age and old people. It's like human beings are only good for the short window of time that they are in their physical prime. After that, you are pretty much disposable.

It sure makes life look bleak. So once my skin is no longer smooth and I don't turn a couple of heads on the street, that is it, I have nothing more to offer the world.

I think with every passing day human beings become better because we are constantly evolving. The further along with are in life, the more wisdom we have gathered (well, hopefully).

Well, you'd hope so.

It is true that advertising places undue emphasis on the whims and preferences of youth, and many families prefer old age homes to the burdens of looking after their parents. Some of these attitudes are culturaI -- I see a lot of nursing home patients and few of them come from Spanish and Asian families.

But I also think the argument that old people are disposable is melodramatic. I see many caring families for every case of neglect. Life is what you make it, and plenty of elderly people defy stereotypes and seem to enjoy it a great deal. Society makes some effort with disabled access, free drugs, seniors social clubs. I think the Internet will further break down barriers and isolation. I think elderly people have always felt neglected and unappreciated by the young.

I wasn't saying that old people are disposable, I was just saying that human beings in general are disposable. Our bodies are like rental cars, we go everywhere in them, when they are brand new we can push the accelerator to the limit. But the car wears out with time. One day, the car either quits on us or has a fender bender that renders it useless.

I am having a bad metaphor day.

I see your point, and will resist the temptation to expand the metaphor.
