A Few Good Men

To me, this is one of the all time most memorable scenes ever.

Plato says on Jan 25, 2008, 07:10:

In my opinion, Col. Nathan R. Jessep ordered a blanket party to straighten a weak marine out. I don't think it was his intention to have him killed, at least that's my understanding of it.

The Col. must have known, however, that the Marine Santiago was sick and could have had a medical doctor check him out at minimum or transferred off the Guantanamo Naval Base at most. Still the dilemma is: should Col. Jessep have been convicted for murder or reprimanded? Blanket parties are a common tradition in the military. The military people I know side with the Col. and I can't help but think that the punishment didn't fit the crime. But then again, this was a military tribunal. The laws are different. Any military here? Current or former? Dan??

I almost became an Army officer many moons ago after going through ROTC in college, so I know a little about military culture. I did Basic training in Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland and my brother was a Marine. Many of my friends are either current or former military and I train self-defense with those guys.

I agree with you, Plato. Also one of my all-time favorite movie scenes.

I don't know enough about military culture to comment - but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't take a towering intellect to understand that if you're a Marine stationed at Gitmo, you don't continually whine about "I wanna go home" and break the chain of command. Butch up, shut your yap, and do your job, is prolly the smart play, huh?
