The Japanese internments camps only were applicable to Japanese americans living in the western states. The Japanese Americans in the Central and Eastern U.S were not interned. Also there were thousands of Italian and German Americans who were also interned from the East coast of the U.S., and not released until the end of the war.

apricots About 25 years ago my mother had melanoma on her forehead. She went to M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston 2 times to have it surgically removed. My father finally took her to Germany to see a well known Dr. Neiper at the time(long since deceased). He gave her some type of apricot perscription and the problem never returned. it worked for her.

ws244 comments on What about American women?

american women Have more rights than men in the U.S, Canada, and the U.K. today. They are not only head of the houshold by tradition, but now also head of the family, the man's former tradition. Everywhere else in the world the man is still head of the family. This is why American liberated women do not do well with overseas men.

ws244 comments on How much luggage should I expect my wife to bring?

luggage Well all the U.S. airlines i recall are down to 50 pounds per bag, the limit being 2 per person unless you go business or first class, then it is 3 and 70 pounds per bag. It is 2 bags per person overseas for tourist class but may then be 70 per bag, but you should check. If one go's on Avianca, they are real liberal about overweight suitcases, so i would look at going with them, depending where you are located.

Let her bring her favorite photos & personal effects, her sexy clothes, and then buy what ever else she needs when she gets here.

Also be prepared that she may gain weight once here, as many Colombian and south American women do, so lay down the golden rule to her if unless you do not care. Once here they tend to fall in to the fat and overweight prevalent gringa fashion we have up here.

peso Have not been here for several months, but have a few comments.

The dollar is worthless all over the world due to our national debt, and the political excuse being if we keep the dollar low it will help our exports. Of course the chinese love this as it does not affect them. the Chinese are mainly financing our debt (which is why we are scared to death of them the result we are doing nothing about north korea)
The trade deficit is bankrupting us. For those who play the stock market not only love globalization but could care less about this.
80% percent of walmarts goods are manufactured in China, and people forget or never knew what made the U.S second to none, was manufacturing and industrialization, which is why china is growing at 8% percent per year while we are losing our middle class due to losing our manufacturing jobs. A middle class can only exist with manufacturing, which requires skilled labor, and the less manufacturing the less of a middle class. There is nothing else that can replace manufacturing that will maintain a middle class.
Education for everyone is a joke, there are already too many educated people in the world for jobs available. Even our own educated work force are losing their jobs to our open door work visa programs, the result being U.S. corporations hire cheap professional labor. For example just go to chase bank in wilmington delaware's headquarters, and one sees many Indian workers from India (who will never return to India).
Even Colombia in a few years will lose their textile industry to the Chinese. No one can compete labor wise against the chinese, not even Colombians. I travel all over the world, and even the Europeans are concerned about the chinese.
This has been the most inept free spending administration in washington since jimmy carter and lyndon johnson, the result being a worthless dollar. Of course the colombians love this, (but not my Colombian wife as we deal in dollars).

medical We jumped from the question of what 11 dollars a month and .30 cents per child covers in Walmart health insurance plans to Social Security at 80 dollars a month which has nothing to do with the Walmart question. Just answer the original question.

ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy

Walmart I recall Maryland passed a law last month dealing with Walmart's abuse and lack of health insurance towards employees and passing it on to the Maryland taxpayers. 11 dollars per month= so what does an 11 dollar per month medical plan entail, and .30 cents a day for a child cover? Even with Walmart matching that 2 times it still comes up to 33 dollars a month for an employee or 27 dollars for a child.
The numbers can not be correct or Walmart would not be making the news about their health insurance programs, along with news they actively are helping employees apply and qualify for different state social service health programs.

ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy

taxes The American taxpayer is subsidizing these people. Most of them pay little if any tax versus the benefits they receive. The social costs to the American taxpayer is far more then they contribute in cheap labor. No different than half of Walmart's employees with no health insurance because Walmart lets the American taxpayer foot the bill.
This illegal issue is an insult to Colombians and others who stand in line and wait years to immigrate, or the ones here trying to sponsor their immediate family members. No one seems to care about them or the double standard.

ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy

taxes It does not matter, they tell the employer they have 8 dependents, and the employer then by rules deducts little if any tax. If the employer lets say issues them a 1099 they do not pay any tax as the employer under a 1099 does not deduct any tax, and the employee probably will not bother to file any return.

Being from South Texas I have seen every game there is, so for someone to say these people are paying their own way the numbers are not there. In Texas property taxes pay for schools. If 2 illegal families live in one rental house with 4 kids, the owner of the house pays little if any school tax because the house is appraised so low. As a rule apartments on the tax rolls are appraised on the low end, so again though the illegal pays rent, he does not make that much so the rent is not much, the owner pays little property school tax, and the public funds these people. These people are being subsidized by the legal taxpayers.

All the Colombians wanting to come here legally have to wait for years in many cases, so rather than defend illegals in this country why not defend people trying to come legally. One would think an educated attorney who imigrated here legally is being a somewhat of a hipprocrite in life to help support people here illegally.

ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy

illegals Must be some really stupid ones in Florida if they are paying any taxes. Most do not pay any taxes. In Texas food in a grocery store is tax free. Employers hire them as sub and as sub sub contractors, and they either have 20 dependents listed on their W2, or are issued 1099's which means they pay little if any tax if they file, and with 1099's they do not even bother to file, and the employer is off the hook either way. No way an illegal Mexican with 1 or 2 kids with free public school, free healthcare, 3 families to a house in South Texas, etc is paying his own way in this Country. A real insult to the people waiting in line to come the legal way.

ws244 comments on In need of some good tips and advise on Bogota

hotels La Fontana is a Colombian Hotel, has a great flea market on sundays
in an open square area the hotel surrounds. There is a little church there and they have entertainment and a church service on sundays also. One can walk around the grounds without going outside the property, has a great breakfast buffet, and i have stayed there many times over the years. It is across the street from Unicentro Mall and in an excellent part of town. It is not cheap. there are other hotels that are very good, but i prefer this one.

The hotel De la opera is in Candalaria the original part of town. a nice but very very small hotel, and the area is not really safe at night. All the congressmen stay there when the congress is in session. the lobby and front desk is about 20 feet by 15 feet.

The Radisson is a very nice hotel and more Americanized, have stayed there many times, however the La Fontona has a much better buffet and a real Colombian atmosphere.

visa Just have he call the British embassy in Bogota tomorrow and see if it is nonsense or not. Never said the U.K. and Canada were the same. In any case the cheapest route is through Aruba on KLm all the way to Dubai with no hassles or visas. Air France is expensive from Bogota, and going to london from Bogota there are no direct flights, so one must go through either Caracas, Paris, or Madrid first then to London.

ws244 comments on Colombiana traveling/living in Middle East

visa If she was denied one for Canada she will not get one for the U.K.

A good way to avoid a visa is to send her from Colombia to Aruba, then on KLM nonstop to Amsterdam (she needs to stay in the International terminal for the next flight), then onward to Dubai on KLM and she should not have a problem. It is about 12 hours Aruba to Amsterdam, then 6 and one half hours Amsterdam to Dubai. Of course she still needs to apply for her U.A.E. visa.

She might also call the French Embassy to see if she can get a transit visa through Paris.

ws244 comments on Colombia Women - Some pretty tough cookies

cooking The majority of women in the better off Colombian families were brought up in households with maids, and consequently never learned how to cook.

ws244 comments on Colombian women having second thoughts

foreign women Well El Corral has very good fries along with their 3/4 pounder.
The latter only available in the fast food outlets and not available in their full service sit down restaurants.
As far as the racism, death threats, degradtion, etc of Colombian women by whomever is doing these nasty deeds(Colombian men one presumes), human rights groups along with the less fortuneate Colombian women left behind must be thrilled to have Foreign men save the aforementioned, with a lifetime opportunity and one way ticket to leave such a despicable society and Country.

ws244 comments on Colombian women having second thoughts

foreign women Love has as many meanings as there are people. Going to another country to find a wife is a business deal. This would be no different than a person living in California going to Florida to find a wife. Colombian women are no different than women anywhere.

ws244 comments on Exploitation of Plátano's Colombian Ancestors Detailed in New Book

people Well if one finds "One hundred years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez then one might entertain reading it. It is published in english and spanish.
English version is ISBN 0-06-074045-0. The book was originally published in Argentina in 1967 under the name "Cien Anos De Soledad". For the gringos out there who have the aptitude of reading more than USA Today, or Colombians reading El Tiempo, the english translated version is a little difficult, however one will at least begin to understand a little more about Colombia.

ws244 comments on My Experience in Colombia

Hotel de la opera is nice Hotel de la opera is a very nice hotel, very safe, secure, and not cheap. Many Colombian congressmen stay there while in session. I was visiting for coffee there one night 2 weeks ago, and this story for this class of hotel, ie la Fontana, Radisson etc does not make sense. To move to another hotel is ridiculous. Maybe for one staying in a cheap hotel it might be prudent to move with this issue. I guess after 5 years with an apartment in Bogota and many times there, i need to now consider having a yellow cab take me a block from my apartment so the driver does not know where i live. I do not even speak spanish. Zona Rosa has some very good restaurants and they do not call their taxi driver buddies. Bogota is no different than any other large city in the world.

ws244 comments on I think most gringos dont like living in bogota

Bogota good food
Good restaurants
good service
put gas in ones car at the service station
good medical facilities
no disabled parking
no EEOC
no ACLU
no Section 8 Housing
no political correctness laws

immigration Yes if the Spanish had not invaded Colombia and Mexico, these respective countries would be first class countries today, or the Portugese in brazil, etc, or so the blame sayers say.

So let us keep updated with President Morales as president of Bolivia, and Chavez of Colombia with their socialist and communist ideals and see how well they do.

Universal healthcare in both the U.K. and in Canada are in dire straits and going broke. When The U.K. National Health insurance came in to being it was designed for basic medical procedures and the elderly. It was never designed to have a 7 month old premature baby receive a new liver etc at hundreds of thousands of costs, etc etc.

Maybe someone on this board can comment on the wonderful National healthcare system that Cuba affords to all her citizens. After 47 years of Cuban utopian society i understand many Cuban ex-pats have been lined up to return to Cuba, but they do not qualify as they have met the Cuban educational requirements of the art of socialism.

peso I disagree, China would be hurt much more so, as we are their primary trading partner. The rest of the world could not fill the void today. At best Walmart would be devastated, but since 80% of Walmarts products are currently made in China it would serve them right and well deserved to see them crash. Now in a few years if the U.S. equated 80% of their imports from China as Walmart now, well then the U.S will be hostage to China. Hopefully the U.S will wakeup to this. What people do not understand is globaziation equates to the cheapest labor there is. One can never compete labor wise against China, as the playing field will never be level, nor Colombans either for that matter. The U.S. politico demos and reps still refuse to acknowledge the Chinese are ruthless Communists. Our middle class is disappearing at the same rate as our manufacturing, and our standard of living is going also.

At my age i recall everything being made in the U.S not many years ago. If we supported 200 million people with our products 30 years ago, we can certainly support 300 million of our people today.
U.S manufacturers until 1970 basically manufactured everything here for 180 years for the american consumer. The reason for corporate america's mas exodus to other countries was not purely for cheap labor.

I meant the stock market is like las vegas. it is legalized gambling sanctioned by the government.

People discount the U.S. and its wealth. People will invest here because it is still the most stable country and currency in the world. Those banana republics in the Mideast are not stable, and the Europeans are still fighting germany since WW2, the only difference is the Germans are using economics today instead of the weapons of yesterday.

We need to have a wager hunter for this time next year. Yes the Miami housing market is much overheated due to individual foreign investment and the weak dollar.

white and immigration Most European countries are still by far a majority "white". Except for the Japanese all the first world countries are of Anglo European heritage. This is a historical fact and yet people never end their rhetoric and excuses to the contrary. It is also a historical fact no South or Cenral American country is a first world country. Most European countries now are beginning to see the results of wide open immigration and the problems and overwhelming costs associated with it, as people in the States are realizing.

Instead of chastising "supposedly all racist white anglos" why not chastise ones fellow south and central americans in ones own respective current or prior country for their lack of equal rights, tort laws, corruption, etc. But then we can blame the gringos for that also.

experience Well just by having an apartment in Bogota and being around there for 5 years. One of the relatives is the senior international money manager for one of the largest Colombian banks, and another relative at another Colombian bank branch in miami watching the customers with money and where they are moving it.

My whole point being if one wants to spend XXX million pesos on an apartment, etc now, in a couple of years they can save quite a sum of money is all i am saying. Colombia is not exactly a retirement and tourist mecca as miami though promoters will say differnt.

Colombia 3 years ago was like a person holding a distressd garage sale. People moved in and bought up good money making deals at bottom prices. But the sale is over, the FARC and ELN are still there, High unemployment, 5% inflation, internal problems, sad but true which also affect the issues at hand. People forget the stock market is no different than gambling, etc if one makes money, they are just making the money the other stockholder lost.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters

uncle sam The politicians are buying votes, whether demo's or rep's which is why it is not being stemmed. These illegals pay little if any taxes, and surely for what they pay in taxes in no way equals the benefits they receive. Three families living in one house does not exactly equal paying their fair share of property and school taxes. In Texas food at the grocery store is not taxable, and the liability insurance for autos is a joke. They buy auto insurance for one month to license their car, etc, and then it is canceled for lack of payment. So much for the giving licenses so they can drive legally, just typical rhetoric to justify their existance here.

The drug problem will not change as the good guys are making just as much as the bad guys by keeping everyone employed in the legal system.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters

illegals I know about this whole issue as i am from here. Just sorry to see another American who complied with the law, spent untold money, time and effort to bring in a Colombian family legally, and then turn around and support and welcome people coming here illegally. Since one supports this activity, then i suppose the plan might be to bring the other members of an extended Colombian family across the border and avoid all the legal hassels. Either eat the whole cake or not. It is hippocritical to have it both ways.

minority That includes all the races, they are not all 50.2% mexican.

But then why not look at the history of the other 3rd world countries and ask oneself why they continue to be 3rd world countries today and not first world. There is not one south or central american country who is first world. Yes anglos run the show, which is why the U.S. is still first world as the European countries. But once again history and the truth is being ignored, and the anglo being attacked as usual. Kind of interesting when the mexicans take over, their history has shown in their own country they are inept politically, so what the preachers on this board are really saying once the mexicans out vote the anglos here, Texas will then follow in the glorius footsteps of equality and fairness as mexico and all the other central and south american countries now practice and enjoy. This is really really something for Americans to look foward to, another little Mexico or Colombia full of terrorists, revolutionaires, and corruption.

In any case the subject was illegals working here and people supporting them, and i am still waiting for an explation on how they are paying all these taxes to the govt, and to discount my proposition on how employers and employees of those employers are breaking the law.

ws244 comments on

Colombia In any case since we are speaking of Colombia, i feel the peso is overvalued as far as anyone contemplating buying property or an apartment there, and i suggest waiting about 2 years and then buy.
Prices have peaked and will start down shortly.

China Well there are many smarter people on this board than myself, but if The U.S. were to crack down on the liberal policies and one way trade deficit with China, China's booming economy would be in for a reality check in no time. Without the U.S. market, the largest country they export to,they would be in a financial disaster. It is a tragedy for the U.S, of course a boom for stockholders, but in the end a diservice to the people of the U.S. People forget those SOB's over there are die hard communists. Look at Microsoft last week and their compliance to satisfy the Chinese on access to the internet.
Of course the socialist liberals are crying of joy to see the U.S. populations lifestyle slowly eroding.

species Yes, soon there will be several different stuffed "mullet gringo species" with eyes of any color other than black or brown in Colombia museums. Seems the Colombia girls have an interest in this phenomena.
As i am pushing 60, my lifestyle is somewhat limited in being just happy to wake up in the morning, and seeing if everything still works to some degree. Candeleria is interesting. Someone in their 70's or later years will tell you 50 years ago it was really a neat area of Bogota.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters

immigration Employers issue w2's with an employees SS number etc and mailing address as required by the IRs. So the employer is either issuing W2's with real or bogus SS numbers, and with real or bogus mailing addresses.

So basically what one here is saying, these illegals have their taxes taken out, but do not bother to file an income tax return as required by law as they are illegal.

So a way around this is they fill out their W2 and declare they have 10 dependents, and accordingly then the employer takes little if any tax out of their paycheck, or their employer is really issuing them 1099's which in this case no taxes are deducted.

After all the paperwork, expense, and ones effort and experience in to bringing a foreign woman and kids to the States from Colombia by law legally, then on the other hand ridicule the same immigration laws and support illegals on the other at U.S. taxpayers expense is hippocritical to say the least. So some posters on this board Basically are saying it is a right for illegals to be here illegally and is a right to violate the laws of the IRS and U.S.

Anglos outnumber mexicans in texas by still a good percentage, and will for quite a few more years. As i am from south texas and other posters on this board are not, i am somewhat familiar with the Texas politics with anglos, mexicans, and illegals.

Some posters on this board, not all, particularly minorities themselves as classified under U.S law, have the same story accusing anglos of anti everything. So this is understood in layman's terms, their preposition is to bring in all the minorities no matter what the law says, so in the end anglos will eventually be outvoted and then there will be equality and social justive for all.
But wait a minute, Lets see these same people for a 100 years now still have not managed to get their own countries straightened out with no equality laws, tort laws, employment laws, or most any laws for that matter, however on the other hand they are rather good at in house terrorism and revolutions. But then that is the anglos fault also.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters

immigrants Yes terribly difficult for legal immigration, and an insult to the foreigners who are trying to come here legally, let alone even obtain a tourst visa.
How can one say the borders are not wide open. Any weekday i go to the ice house for lunch and a 100 mexicans pile off their contractors pickups and buy their lunch. Anyone wanting a Mexican for work just has to go to certain places in any city (south texas) and and can get as many as one wants.

There are millions of them here and finally the news media is bringing the truth out. Why not just do away with the INS laws completely.

The country is not what is used to be for obvious resons, but then we can not speak of that due to political correctness.

I disagree all americans are spoiled. This country would not have acquired the wealth it has without industrious Americans. And yes many segments of our population are hopeless. Anyone who was in the army surely is not. I have an apartment in Bogota and will retire there if i live long enough, and will not come back. i have my health insurance there now as personal health insurance is several hundred dollars a month here.

I think the American Indian immigrated here to South Texas via asia, Canada, Alaska etc.

peso Colombia's construction industry is slowing down, at least in Bogota. Last year there were "for rent" and "for sale" signs everywhere, but now one does not see nearly as many. This means the easy financing money is becoming tighter, in addition to the Colombian ex-pats who have been investing. I think it is the worst time to buy in Colombia, for now rent and then buy in maybe 2 years. I do know many upper class Colombians are investing in the dollar now. Once uribe is re-elected the devaluation process will start.
Once Morales is in place as Bolivian president, and with Chavez and Fidel's support, well Bolivia will become the crowning Markist Socialist star of South America, where equality and social justice will prevail!!
Viva Venezuela, Viva Cuba. Viva Bolivia!! Viva Yankee go home or tu muerte!!!

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters

immigrants There is a great difference between legal and illegal. The previous posters wife is legal. Illegals do not file income taxes unless they have a social security number under false pretenses. In any case they are at the bottom of the wage scale and would pay little or no tax anyway. Texas does not have a state income tax. The bottom line is these people are here against the law. I get so tired of all the taxes illegals pay, and it is flatly just not true, an outright lie in comparison to services received, and another excuse to justify open borders. Anyone self employed or having a business knows full well how to skirt tax laws with illegals, and if it were not so easy then thousands of employers would not have them working for them. Unfortuneately anyone who smells of the anti immigration crowd is branded everthing in the book.

People who went through all the paperwork, INS interviews themselves, or to bring a spouse relative with all the time, energy, expense to come here legally, and then these same people turning right around, defending, encouraging everyone else to come illegally, no problem, bring them in no matter what the law is, well this kind of thinking is hippocritical and one should be ashamed of themselves.

In the end it is always the same, "just wait until the latinos out vote the racist anglos" who do not speak Spanish. If anglo, one is a racist, and one is non anglo, well any wording is justified.

let 10 million gringos go to Colombia or Mexicio and refuse to learn spanish, demand english be taught in schools, free education, medical, no cedula required, etc etc and then watch the real fireworks of life. Of course the bright side is with 10 million gringos in their respective countries, they would then end up as first world countries.

peso Hunter if China increases their currency it will hurt their exports to the U.S, the largest country they export to. My original post i think indicated Colombia has to devalue its currency to keep their exports viable. Whether the dollar gains or not, i agree it will be due to U.S. policy, but in the end the peso will still devalue, whether against any other currency, ie the Euro and Swiss franc, Pound. i do know many upper class Colombians are trading pesos for dollars at this time. Also remember construction is slowing in Colombia, and their inflation is still around 5%. Not pointing at you personaly, but the problem is people gage other countries economies to the U.S. but fail to realize how rich the U.S. and population is.
Platano i do not have figures, however at this time the Chinese are very much after a Colombian natural resource. Also now that China is in the WTO they need small countries like Colombia to circumnavigate WTO policies.
Anyone having gone to India knows with a billion people they have too many social problems to be the new power. also they are a very poor country in natural resources. China is a communist state, with no freedoms. In the end what will determine Chinese status will be the policies of the U.S. As long as the U.S continues to export its manufacturing to China well then yes China will come out ahead.

ws244 comments on In my opinion

gringos Well i have been going to Bogota for 5 years and have an apartment there. I see very very few gringos except in Zona Rosa. Many older Spanish Colombians look like they are anglo, but it is deceiving as they are of European descent. As i visited my Optometrist last week, Dr. Amaya Quijano(Carrera 9/117) said my eyes were no problem.
Remember "mullet gringos" in Colombia miss nothing with their eyes, particularly other gringos and especially the endless Colombian women to look at.

Litost Hard rock is really expensive as you know. El Corral on the other side at Atlantis has better food and a much better price.

peso and china China is already heavily involved with Colombia. People just do not know it. Just wait and see the productive Colombian Textile workers start to lose their jobs and industry over the next 5 years as even Colombians can not compete against Chinese labor rates. The Mexicans could not either. Globalization in reality nothing more than finding the country with the cheapest labor costs, and in the worlds case China.
The peso will devalue because Colombia needs to have it devalue for its on economy.

immigrants Yes Tinto, better vocabulary should have been used. I was thinking "dwelling people." etc. You know how us "old mullet gringos" think at times, Thankyou.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters

immigrants Illegals or any others would usually be violating city codes and be arrested for washing windshields on public street corners. Until 45 years ago there was no welfare system in the U.S. It is amazing generation after generation of previous immigrants did not even know the word welfare, but rather did it on their own. Unlike today where 95% of the immigrants are from 3rd world countries who can not survive without welfare.

Well lets just let the FARC kick the 20% of the population out of Colombia who are Spanish, along with anyone who is not of indigenous population out of Bolivia now with its new President Morales, including all foreign investment, military aid etc and then Colombia and Bolivia can have the same Utopian Cuban society which many one this board are really preaching for the degenerate U.S. and other first world European countries.

Illegal immigrants have free medical, public schooling, free legal services, pay little if any tax except for sales taxes, and supported by the American taxpayer. Unlike the European immigrant the 3rd world immigrants think it is their legal right. After 200 years in their respective third world country these people never have been able to become a first world country or get their act together. But it is all the Europeans and Americans fault for their ineptness, just ask.

Colombia Well i just spent a month in Bogota, and whether in Andino, Unicentro, Hacienda Santa Barbara malls I was about the only gringo in sight. I was probably the only gringo in Candaleria and in the square at city center on the 27th, and Park 93 on the 22nd. Yes one sees gringos at zona rosa at the Bogota Beer Company. After 5 years going to Bogota one sees less white gringos not more. Actually one sees many Colombian men with their girlfriends, wives half their age. If gringos are "white mullets" as stated in a previous post, well then there are many more Colombian "mullets" chasing young skirts.

indians As a subject in history, Congress gave American Indians the right to vote for national elections in 1924.
No one is looking down on legal immigrants, but rather on illegal immigrants. Unfortuneately stories that the U.S economy would be decimated if illegal workers were not here, racism, anti immigration Americans etc, are used to justify this uncontrolled illegal immigration. Fortuneately as more americans are made aware of this travestry by the media, postive changes are in the making much to the sojourn to many, but not all of the minority population.

peso Remember many expat Colombians reinvested in Colombia buying etc while the strong dollar was still strong, and after Uribe's election and commitment of the States. They also invested in the stock market which has done really well. What people forget is 3,4 years ago people could buy in Colombia apartments etc for 60 cents on the dollar as the economy was so decimated, so outside investment was a given. As gringobogota says if the peso is not devalued many exporting jobs will be lost. Also remember Colombia has an inflation rate of about 5% and their economy can not absorb job loss. Construction is slowing down now, the recipe for a slowdown.

Canadians There are thousands of Canadians who have immigrated to the States. One illustrious legal minded poster on the happy board board, a defender of social equality and justice for all whether here legally or not in the U.S, himself though legally also bailed out of Utopia Socialist Canada to live here. Look in Immigration statistics.

ws244 Aside for deficit reasons, the reason for the weak dollar a couple of years ago was to increase U.S. exports. Colombia is now facing the same problem with exports and will devalue. They have no choice. Colombia has had a temendous amount of foreign investment which has also fueled the strong peso, but this also coming to an end.

immigration My previous posting was speaking of the immigrants who legally immigrated to the States, as in the thousands of legal Canadian immigrants here who still expound the greatness of Canada's Social Democracy and immigration policies. Amazing they do not stay in Canada and help their own open door immigrant policies, particularly the educated immigrants who will do their Canadian counterparts job for much less. But no the Canadians bail and come here and do the same to the Americans, which is hippocritical like a double talking used car salesman.

peso Upper middle class Colombians are already converting their pesos to dollars in anticipation of the devaluation. Economically Colombian exports require a devalued peso. Residential construction is slowing down, though commercial construction is still okay. Colombia does not have the monetary resources nor economy to substain a strong peso but only for a limited time.

peso For the Colombian Capitalists, Socialists, and Communists both past and present, the peso will devalue about 15% against the dollar by the end of 2006.

third world They work at jobs no one else wants because of the ultra liberal U.S. welfare system to her own citizens, and immigration laws unlike anywhere else in the world. Cananda is a first world country of 30 million people with free healthcare, education, etc etc and yet even the educated Canadians come here in droves out of disgust from the lack of their own governments responsibility to their own people. It is always amazing how transplanted foreigners come to the States to further their own benefit, yet expounding the greatness of their own inept countries and blaming Americans in the same sentence for all the ills of the world.

immigration Yes Dobbs and Oreilly are Americans who see a responsibility by informing the majority of the American population what is really going on with the costs and realities of illegal immigration from all of these 3rd world third rate countries.

forestry The article 2 weeks ago in El Tiempo was written by my brother in law. He coordinated with the legislators for well over a year to help pass this legislation. Previously he was the second in charge at the Colombian EPA. It is a good piece of legislation, and he is socially more pro indigenous than pro Uribe.
