ws244 comments on The Japanese internments camps only were applicable to Japanese americans living in the western states. The Japanese Americans in the Central and Eastern U.S were not interned. Also there were thousands of Italian and German Americans who were also interned from the East coast of the U.S., and not released until the end of the war.

ws244 comments on apricots About 25 years ago my mother had melanoma on her forehead. She went to M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston 2 times to have it surgically removed. My father finally took her to Germany to see a well known Dr. Neiper at the time(long since deceased). He gave her some type of apricot perscription and the problem never returned. it worked for her.

ws244 comments on What about American women? american women Have more rights than men in the U.S, Canada, and the U.K. today. They are not only head of the houshold by tradition, but now also head of the family, the man's former tradition. Everywhere else in the world the man is still head of the family. This is why American liberated women do not do well with overseas men.

ws244 comments on How much luggage should I expect my wife to bring? luggage Well all the U.S. airlines i recall are down to 50 pounds per bag, the limit being 2 per person unless you go business or first class, then it is 3 and 70 pounds per bag. It is 2 bags per person overseas for tourist class but may then be 70 per bag, but you should check. If one go's on Avianca, they are real liberal about overweight suitcases, so i would look at going with them, depending where you are located.

ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy medical We jumped from the question of what 11 dollars a month and .30 cents per child covers in Walmart health insurance plans to Social Security at 80 dollars a month which has nothing to do with the Walmart question. Just answer the original question.
ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy Walmart I recall Maryland passed a law last month dealing with Walmart's abuse and lack of health insurance towards employees and passing it on to the Maryland taxpayers. 11 dollars per month= so what does an 11 dollar per month medical plan entail, and .30 cents a day for a child cover? Even with Walmart matching that 2 times it still comes up to 33 dollars a month for an employee or 27 dollars for a child.
ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy taxes The American taxpayer is subsidizing these people. Most of them pay little if any tax versus the benefits they receive. The social costs to the American taxpayer is far more then they contribute in cheap labor. No different than half of Walmart's employees with no health insurance because Walmart lets the American taxpayer foot the bill.
ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy taxes It does not matter, they tell the employer they have 8 dependents, and the employer then by rules deducts little if any tax. If the employer lets say issues them a 1099 they do not pay any tax as the employer under a 1099 does not deduct any tax, and the employee probably will not bother to file any return.
ws244 comments on McCain-Kennedy illegals Must be some really stupid ones in Florida if they are paying any taxes. Most do not pay any taxes. In Texas food in a grocery store is tax free. Employers hire them as sub and as sub sub contractors, and they either have 20 dependents listed on their W2, or are issued 1099's which means they pay little if any tax if they file, and with 1099's they do not even bother to file, and the employer is off the hook either way. No way an illegal Mexican with 1 or 2 kids with free public school, free healthcare, 3 families to a house in South Texas, etc is paying his own way in this Country. A real insult to the people waiting in line to come the legal way.

ws244 comments on Colombiana traveling/living in Middle East visa Just have he call the British embassy in Bogota tomorrow and see if it is nonsense or not. Never said the U.K. and Canada were the same. In any case the cheapest route is through Aruba on KLm all the way to Dubai with no hassles or visas. Air France is expensive from Bogota, and going to london from Bogota there are no direct flights, so one must go through either Caracas, Paris, or Madrid first then to London.

ws244 comments on Colombian women having second thoughts foreign women Love has as many meanings as there are people. Going to another country to find a wife is a business deal. This would be no different than a person living in California going to Florida to find a wife. Colombian women are no different than women anywhere.

ws244 comments on My Experience in Colombia Hotel de la opera is nice Hotel de la opera is a very nice hotel, very safe, secure, and not cheap. Many Colombian congressmen stay there while in session. I was visiting for coffee there one night 2 weeks ago, and this story for this class of hotel, ie la Fontana, Radisson etc does not make sense. To move to another hotel is ridiculous. Maybe for one staying in a cheap hotel it might be prudent to move with this issue. I guess after 5 years with an apartment in Bogota and many times there, i need to now consider having a yellow cab take me a block from my apartment so the driver does not know where i live. I do not even speak spanish. Zona Rosa has some very good restaurants and they do not call their taxi driver buddies. Bogota is no different than any other large city in the world.

ws244 comments on peso I disagree, China would be hurt much more so, as we are their primary trading partner. The rest of the world could not fill the void today. At best Walmart would be devastated, but since 80% of Walmarts products are currently made in China it would serve them right and well deserved to see them crash. Now in a few years if the U.S. equated 80% of their imports from China as Walmart now, well then the U.S will be hostage to China. Hopefully the U.S will wakeup to this. What people do not understand is globaziation equates to the cheapest labor there is. One can never compete labor wise against China, as the playing field will never be level, nor Colombans either for that matter. The U.S. politico demos and reps still refuse to acknowledge the Chinese are ruthless Communists. Our middle class is disappearing at the same rate as our manufacturing, and our standard of living is going also.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters white and immigration Most European countries are still by far a majority "white". Except for the Japanese all the first world countries are of Anglo European heritage. This is a historical fact and yet people never end their rhetoric and excuses to the contrary. It is also a historical fact no South or Cenral American country is a first world country. Most European countries now are beginning to see the results of wide open immigration and the problems and overwhelming costs associated with it, as people in the States are realizing.

ws244 comments on experience Well just by having an apartment in Bogota and being around there for 5 years. ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters uncle sam The politicians are buying votes, whether demo's or rep's which is why it is not being stemmed. These illegals pay little if any taxes, and surely for what they pay in taxes in no way equals the benefits they receive. Three families living in one house does not exactly equal paying their fair share of property and school taxes. In Texas food at the grocery store is not taxable, and the liability insurance for autos is a joke. They buy auto insurance for one month to license their car, etc, and then it is canceled for lack of payment. So much for the giving licenses so they can drive legally, just typical rhetoric to justify their existance here.
ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters illegals I know about this whole issue as i am from here. Just sorry to see another American who complied with the law, spent untold money, time and effort to bring in a Colombian family legally, and then turn around and support and welcome people coming here illegally. Since one supports this activity, then i suppose the plan might be to bring the other members of an extended Colombian family across the border and avoid all the legal hassels. Either eat the whole cake or not. It is hippocritical to have it both ways.

ws244 comments on China Well there are many smarter people on this board than myself, but if The U.S. were to crack down on the liberal policies and one way trade deficit with China, China's booming economy would be in for a reality check in no time. Without the U.S. market, the largest country they export to,they would be in a financial disaster. It is a tragedy for the U.S, of course a boom for stockholders, but in the end a diservice to the people of the U.S. People forget those SOB's over there are die hard communists. Look at Microsoft last week and their compliance to satisfy the Chinese on access to the internet.

ws244 comments on peso Colombia's construction industry is slowing down, at least in Bogota. Last year there were "for rent" and "for sale" signs everywhere, but now one does not see nearly as many. This means the easy financing money is becoming tighter, in addition to the Colombian ex-pats who have been investing. I think it is the worst time to buy in Colombia, for now rent and then buy in maybe 2 years. I do know many upper class Colombians are investing in the dollar now. Once uribe is re-elected the devaluation process will start.
ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters immigrants There is a great difference between legal and illegal. The previous posters wife is legal. Illegals do not file income taxes unless they have a social security number under false pretenses. In any case they are at the bottom of the wage scale and would pay little or no tax anyway. Texas does not have a state income tax. The bottom line is these people are here against the law. I get so tired of all the taxes illegals pay, and it is flatly just not true, an outright lie in comparison to services received, and another excuse to justify open borders. Anyone self employed or having a business knows full well how to skirt tax laws with illegals, and if it were not so easy then thousands of employers would not have them working for them. Unfortuneately anyone who smells of the anti immigration crowd is branded everthing in the book.

ws244 comments on peso Hunter if China increases their currency it will hurt their exports to the U.S, the largest country they export to. My original post i think indicated Colombia has to devalue its currency to keep their exports viable. Whether the dollar gains or not, i agree it will be due to U.S. policy, but in the end the peso will still devalue, whether against any other currency, ie the Euro and Swiss franc, Pound. i do know many upper class Colombians are trading pesos for dollars at this time. Also remember construction is slowing in Colombia, and their inflation is still around 5%. Not pointing at you personaly, but the problem is people gage other countries economies to the U.S. but fail to realize how rich the U.S. and population is.

ws244 comments on In my opinion gringos Well i have been going to Bogota for 5 years and have an apartment there. I see very very few gringos except in Zona Rosa. Many older Spanish Colombians look like they are anglo, but it is deceiving as they are of European descent. As i visited my Optometrist last week, Dr. Amaya Quijano(Carrera 9/117) said my eyes were no problem.

ws244 comments on peso and china China is already heavily involved with Colombia. People just do not know it. Just wait and see the productive Colombian Textile workers start to lose their jobs and industry over the next 5 years as even Colombians can not compete against Chinese labor rates. The Mexicans could not either. Globalization in reality nothing more than finding the country with the cheapest labor costs, and in the worlds case China.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters immigrants Yes Tinto, better vocabulary should have been used. I was thinking "dwelling people." etc. You know how us "old mullet gringos" think at times, Thankyou.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters immigrants Illegals or any others would usually be violating city codes and be arrested for washing windshields on public street corners. Until 45 years ago there was no welfare system in the U.S. It is amazing generation after generation of previous immigrants did not even know the word welfare, but rather did it on their own. Unlike today where 95% of the immigrants are from 3rd world countries who can not survive without welfare.

ws244 comments on In my opinion Colombia Well i just spent a month in Bogota, and whether in Andino, Unicentro, Hacienda Santa Barbara malls I was about the only gringo in sight. I was probably the only gringo in Candaleria and in the square at city center on the 27th, and Park 93 on the 22nd. Yes one sees gringos at zona rosa at the Bogota Beer Company. After 5 years going to Bogota one sees less white gringos not more. Actually one sees many Colombian men with their girlfriends, wives half their age. If gringos are "white mullets" as stated in a previous post, well then there are many more Colombian "mullets" chasing young skirts.

ws244 comments on peso Remember many expat Colombians reinvested in Colombia buying etc while the strong dollar was still strong, and after Uribe's election and commitment of the States. They also invested in the stock market which has done really well. What people forget is 3,4 years ago people could buy in Colombia apartments etc for 60 cents on the dollar as the economy was so decimated, so outside investment was a given. As gringobogota says if the peso is not devalued many exporting jobs will be lost. Also remember Colombia has an inflation rate of about 5% and their economy can not absorb job loss. Construction is slowing down now, the recipe for a slowdown.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters Canadians There are thousands of Canadians who have immigrated to the States. One illustrious legal minded poster on the happy board board, a defender of social equality and justice for all whether here legally or not in the U.S, himself though legally also bailed out of Utopia Socialist Canada to live here. Look in Immigration statistics.
ws244 comments on ws244 Aside for deficit reasons, the reason for the weak dollar a couple of years ago was to increase U.S. exports. Colombia is now facing the same problem with exports and will devalue. They have no choice. Colombia has had a temendous amount of foreign investment which has also fueled the strong peso, but this also coming to an end.
ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters immigration My previous posting was speaking of the immigrants who legally immigrated to the States, as in the thousands of legal Canadian immigrants here who still expound the greatness of Canada's Social Democracy and immigration policies. Amazing they do not stay in Canada and help their own open door immigrant policies, particularly the educated immigrants who will do their Canadian counterparts job for much less. But no the Canadians bail and come here and do the same to the Americans, which is hippocritical like a double talking used car salesman.
ws244 comments on peso Upper middle class Colombians are already converting their pesos to dollars in anticipation of the devaluation. Economically Colombian exports require a devalued peso. Residential construction is slowing down, though commercial construction is still okay. Colombia does not have the monetary resources nor economy to substain a strong peso but only for a limited time.
ws244 comments on peso For the Colombian Capitalists, Socialists, and Communists both past and present, the peso will devalue about 15% against the dollar by the end of 2006.

ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters third world They work at jobs no one else wants because of the ultra liberal U.S. welfare system to her own citizens, and immigration laws unlike anywhere else in the world. Cananda is a first world country of 30 million people with free healthcare, education, etc etc and yet even the educated Canadians come here in droves out of disgust from the lack of their own governments responsibility to their own people. It is always amazing how transplanted foreigners come to the States to further their own benefit, yet expounding the greatness of their own inept countries and blaming Americans in the same sentence for all the ills of the world.
ws244 comments on Immigration Protesters immigration Yes Dobbs and Oreilly are Americans who see a responsibility by informing the majority of the American population what is really going on with the costs and realities of illegal immigration from all of these 3rd world third rate countries.

ws244 comments on Forestry Law approved: Uribe 1, Environment 0 forestry The article 2 weeks ago in El Tiempo was written by my brother in law. He coordinated with the legislators for well over a year to help pass this legislation. Previously he was the second in charge at the Colombian EPA. It is a good piece of legislation, and he is socially more pro indigenous than pro Uribe.
