Rob77's above post is just plain silly. It is in the best economic interest of everyone involved to insure that the bulls make the strongest showing possible. That the bull would be deliberately impaired is laughable, performance enhancing drugs are much more likely.

I won't try to justify this "sport", although it is truly an ancient cultural tradition. There is a strong PITE sentiment on this board that will not be swayed. It is virtually always fatal for the bull but there is an ever-so-slightly better than snowball-in-hell chance for survival. I saw an indulto just once, the crowd went crazy for the bravery of both the bull and matador. It was akin to seeing a grand slam home run win a no hitter in the bottom of the 17th inning
