C'mon Ken. It's a question of attitude with respect to venezuela...
My own experience: a number of years ago I spent 6 months in Ras Gharib, a small village in Egypt, on the Red Sea, which was (and probably still is) an oil production center. But because of my limited experience in the country, if I would post on an egyptian forum I could not discourage others to visit Egypt because I didn't have the oportunity myself to visit Assouan, Thebes, the Nile and all the tourist and archeological centers and museums....
To really experience Venezuela you will have to get out of Maracaibo which has never been and will never be a tourist destination... you mentioned you like to trek, adventure etc, do like the thousands of backpackers who come yearly to trek Mount Roraima for example. Go to the Orinoco delta, Do a little research you will see what I mean.
