Fighting latifundio: expropiation of the land

I came across a youtube video where the president to Venezuela is announcing taking the land from its owners because they just use it to show off. "If you don't work the land, you loose the right to it"
It appears to be the real beginning of communism. What do you think?

I do not know about that tax policy you are talking about. I think that if the US government goes to you this week and tells you that you have to give away a nice farm you have somewhere in the Midwest your post will be completely different. You would not be talking about taxes at all. I think you would probably be very upset and be thinking that it is not fair and so on.
I think the man (the president of Venezuela) seems to be adopting some communist measures. Some Cubans I've talked to said that Fidel did the same in Cuba in the beginning of his dictatorial years.

Absolutely S.E.P., same tactics. Gonna render the same results too.......bad news, ill fated. When the govt runs the people, instead of the people running the govt. its game over! I just hope the good folks of Venez are capable of the level of organization required to throw the monkey off their back.........aloha......

Sounds like collectivization 30 s Soviet style style. I know my girlfriend's brother in Tolima who owns 3 acres would rathe work for the big Farm entrepeneur rice grower during harvest than a bunch of incompetent governmet bureaucrats.

Pobresito Venezuelanos.

It is a delicate situation, when land can be taken over by the gvmt borders dangerously on socialism. I know its been done before with good results, but in the case of Chaves. This guy is a loon!

There is a thorough article on this in Saturday's Washington Post:

"In Venezuela, Land 'Rescue' Hopes Unmet
Farmers Struggle on Expropriated Plots"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/19/AR2009...

Farms continue to get confiscated and food production is dropping rapidly. This policy is unfair and a complete disaster. In the story above, they interview current and former property owners as well as the new "tenants". There are no new owners because Chavez says the state owns all of the land.
