Just got back from my 8th trip to Colombia, my first in almost 3 years. Spent 10 days in Monteria and Sincelejo with my wife's family. I really like this part of the country and we are probably going to retire here in the next few years. The only person I remember that posted about Cordoba and Sucre was Utopia Cowboy, who I haven't seen for a while. The one thing I noticed was everyone was walking around with T-shirts and hats with everything in English. When you asked about it, they ...
My wife and I are going back to Colombia in September for the first time in 2 years. When I checked the hotel rates on the places I used to stay I got a real sticker shock:
Radisson was $125.00/night now $200.00
Zona Rosa hotels like Morrison or Hamilton Court
were $80.00 now $140.00
Peso/Dollar ratio would only account for about half of this increase, I would say.
Also, it seems impossible to use Su ...
Last night my new wife (1 month) and I went to the Carlos Vives concert at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. Before the show we stopped off at the crowded CNN center to get a sandwich. There were lots of people there because the punk rock band Green Day was playing. I have to say I was happy to be with the 2,000 seeing Carlos Vives instead of the 15,000 (?) seeing Green Day.
The 15,000 were there to see a snarling sarcastic, cynical punk rock group whose latest album is called American ...
On Sunday, July 24, 2005 in Miami, Florida in front of a small gathering of friends and family, I married the sweet Colombiana who I met in Bogota on a cool evening just over 2 years ago.
I would like to thank all the members of this forum for all the information and support. When, I thought that Nancy would never get up here, I often turned to this forum to get my fill of Colombia and often we would talk about things that I read here during our long phone conversations.
My novia's k-1 visa was approved on April 26. Does anyone know exactly how long it will take for her to receive it? We want to go to the Bacilos concert in Atlanta on May 13.
Is there a pick up your visa at the embassy option?

I am hoping that my wonderful YAYITA will be here next month and have trying to fix up things in my house for her. Does anyone know how to get your TV to work with Spanish subtitles. Is it the TV that controls this or the cable company or both? Does it work with all channels or just a few? I would like to have gotten a dish but I have too many trees around.
There is a control on the TV with the various languages and designations such as T1, T2, T3, T4, C1, C2, C3, C4. But I can ...
Peter,
Thanks for separating out this topic. I am sure most people aren't interested in the Visa situations but those that are, are VERY interested. Thanks so much for this site, my novia and I enjoyed looking at it together and I am always bringing up topics to her that I read here.

Just got back from Bogota and was very dissapointed that our visa was turned down. The reason - There was one letter difference in the my fiance's middle name between her birth certificate and passport - (a silent h). Everything else was okay. All I can say is the experience was not pleasant. I think the chairs in the waiting area are made of old barbed wire. The wait was almost 7 hours and there is no information given to you at any time. My novia was very upset as we wanted to get married in M ...
If any you watch this show on the GOLF CHANNEL, one of the contestants on the BIG BREAK 3 is a cute Paisa named Valeria. She is just 25, but has 3 kids and was a junior golf champion in Colombia and won South American titles. If you want to root for her the next program is Tuesday night. Medellion seems to be where all the golfers come from in Colombia as the two guys in the US OPEN last year were from there also. ...
Does anyone every notice that Colombians say the pharse "IT'S OKAY" when they have no idea what your talking about.
As a chessplayer, I haven't noticed a lot of people playing chess in the parks or streets in Bogota, although there is a place in Cartegena known for this. There is an exellent web site about chess in Colombia at the following link.
http://www.ajedrezencolombia.com/comentarios.htm
There is supposed to be a new chess club at Calle 73 15-10 called CLUB CHORNEY with tournaments on weekends. Has anyone visited it? ...
I haven't seen mention here of the tragedy that fell upon Luis Fernando Montoya. He is the ex coach of the ONCE CALDES miracle futbol team that captured the hearts of all Colombians when they won the Copa Libertador. As I understand it the coach was out shopping with his wife and brother in Medellion when a purse snatcher shot him in the neck. He is now in the hospital in Medellion and will be a quadriplegic. He has received over 2000 messages. If you would like to email the coach, here is the e ...
The official rate of exchange is about 2500 but the El tiempo lists the rate in the casas de cambio as 2100 and my novia says that currently in Monteria the dollar is fetching only 1000 pesos because the area is flooded with dollars. I told her I didnt think that could be possible. Could it?

Hola amigos,
I usually go to Bogota and pick up my novia and then travel to other countries in South America. I have noticed that the exit tarifas are very high here compared to other countries. For instance Costa Rica is about $17 and Ecuador about $28 in Colombia it is $45. When I leave with her it is $90. Then they hit me up for another $45 when I return even though I am staying just one night. Leaving Wednesday again for two days in BOGOTA and then a week in Argentina.
Hi,
I am currently reading "The Palace of Justice" by Ana Carrigan. She seems to be very sympathetic to the M-19 and claims that they were not motivated by the Narcotrafficers wanting to stop extraditions, but simply thought of this plan themselves. I had always heard otherwise, but she claims this was just a Colombian government coverup.
What is the consensus?

I love your site. Thank you so much for this great resource and source of entertainment.
The number in the reply column doesnt seem to match the actual number of messages that follow.
For instance on my last post Maria, full of grace - It say 12 but there are only 7 messages.
Am I missing something.
Thanks again ...
Hi everyone.
I just saw this remarkable movie which is all about Colombia and highly recommend it. It is about a 17 girl from a small town in Colombia and how she becomes a "mule" to get out. To me although I hate that every movie about Colombia seems to center around drugs, this movie is exceptional due to its depiction of the difficulty of the "gente" in the small towns. I also was very moved by the actress who portrayed the sister of "Lucy" one of the other mules. Her speech a ...
I got a chance to attend the concert of Colombian musician CABAS last Saturday night in Atlanta. He is currently on a short American tour of Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago and NY. The crowd in Atlanta was small but enthusiastic, especially the chicas, who kept grabbing him and trying to get onstage. He did all his hits "Mi BonBon" and "La Caderona". His band was great and everyone was dancing and singing along. If you ever get a chance to see him - it is worth it. Also, I think his song Colombia - ...
Hi,
My novia is a futbol fanatica and I was thinking of making my next trip a futbol trip. My idea is to take in the Ecuador-Colombia game in Quito on 6/1 and then go to Barranquilla for the Colombia-Uruguay game on 6/4. I think getting tickets for the game in Colombia is through the Colombian futbol association (can anyone verify) and I'll get my novia to do it, but what about the road game? What are the prices? Also is it wise to be a visiting fan in Ecuador - Can I wear my C ...
I was talking to my girlfriend in Colombia about the Saddam Hussein capture and she said that she wished that they would catch Mono JoyJoy and Tirofijo like that. I did a google search and couldn't find much on them. I imagine they are FARC or ELN. Does anybody have any more information on who they are? ...
Maybe someone can advise me. I am a gringo with a Colombian girlfriend. I have been there twice and am returning in February. I want her to visit here but she was denied a visitors visa in early December (not enough money in the bank and she has neither parents, kids or a husband in Colombia). My question is if we use the fiance visa option, and decide not to get married right away is there any other way she can ever get back to the USA. We are considering marriage in the future but we would like ...
