The best thing about taking a taxi in Medellin is the radio... Does anyone know how I can listen to Medellin radio live on the internet?? Currently, I have the address for Tropicana: http://www.tropicanafm.com/ Anymore for anymore??? ...
I'm sure there were way more gringos in Medellin a few months back... where are they all? I was expecting an unsavoury amount given that we are now in holiday season. Or have I lost my glasses?
If Medellin is so hot when it comes to the above... why does Google lead me to an array of terrible websites that I wouldn’t trust to cut my hair, let alone sculpt my face... ? Do high quality agencies exist? I've searched poor but happy but it brings up a random list of doctors names, nothing more... who would I contact regarding a package holiday that guarantees the best of everything... for these services??? Thanks Usher ...
I own an apartment and I have 2 lodgers that live with me. Due to a change in circumstances i've had to tell them they can no longer stay at the apartment, so i've given them 30 days notice. However, one of the lodgers has reacted really badly and told me he will stay at the apartment for as long as he wants and he will pay me only if and when he decides. He has also told me 'not to fuck with him' because he 'knows powerful people in medelin'. Where do I stand legally? Can I kick him ou ...
Purely hypothetical of course… but... If I was to... run up a small debt on my UK bank card… let’s say, just max out my overdraft with no intention of paying it back…about $3,000. What would be the consequences? If they knew my address in Colombia… would they ever be able to sell the debt to a Colombian debt collector? Would being blacklisted in the UK, have any impact on my relationship with my Colombian bank? I don’t know if blacklisting is a global thing. I’m no ...

Does anybody have experience working for EAFIT or any other educational institution in Medellin... what is the application process? Pay? Hours? Thanks Usher
Another week, another question... Any good or bad experiences hand-gliding in Medellin? Does it matter where you do it or who you do it with? It would be nice to know the best and the one's to avoid. The only hand-gliding story on pbh so far is of someone accidently landing in Bello and getting kicked to death. Must have been a while back. Thanks in advance. Usher ...

Slightly odd question... by related I mean... any kind of business or organisation... Hotels, Hostels, Forums, Newspapers, Government, Anything... Is the number more than 1,000? More than 5,000? How could I find this out? ...
Or is that seen as bad business?
I know, there are a few posts on this, but they are not comprehensive. I'm tired of apologising for my inability to dance. It used to be a good chat up line, now its just lame. I'm looking for a place to learn salsa. Something authentic. Perhaps, Cuban. Certainly not like the cliché salsa schools you find in London. I want a Latin teacher... and not some Americanised Colombian who knows more about Miami than Medellin. Perhaps, an old Cuban man with a wispy beard and glasses (for ...
Help! I want to Help! There are quite a few posts about this, but they're all rubbish. When I say volunteering, I mean, actually doing something, as opposed to paying money to receive a monthly newsletter or something like that. The only half decent thing I've found is Globalteer... http://www.globalteer.org/projects/colombia-kids.html but while I don't mind paying a bit of money, $760 dollars per week seems very steep. So, does anyone know, a charitable organisation, big or small ...
Does anybody know where I can buy a parrot (ideally in Medellin)? I want a big, intelligent parrot, something like a Yellow-headed Amazon, Yellow-naped Amazon or Blue-fronted Amazon. Perhaps, there is a reputable parrot farm or something that could also offer advice and veterinary services? I don't want to buy a parrot stolen from the jungle. ...

My mum is coming to Medellin for a holiday. So, what are the best things to do here... what would you recommend... any hidden gems I don't know about?
Just need to double check... to enter Colombia from the UK, you do not need to have any vaccinations right? What about, to enter Parque Tayrona... do you need the yellow fever certificate?
I want to register my business. Can anyone give me a quick bullet point guide? What do I need to do and in what order? Some other thoughts… - Is it important to register a lot of capitol? If not, what is the minimum I can register? - What are the tax implications, if any, for registering a ‘company’ as opposed to an ‘individual’ business? Many thanks Usher ...
PBH is like the wild west... and that's mostly a good thing. However, when it comes to business and people advertising jobs, etc (which is clearly useful for the PBH community) its far too easy for trolls or overly negative people to ruin someone's post. Maybe we need a 'business' section that only permits comments from users with a certian number of posts? Or maybe users here need a karma rating... so you can quickly identify a nutter or overly disliked person who should not be trusted. ...
So, I get my new apartment and naturally ring EPM to get broadband and cable. They tell me I have to wait for the previous tenant to cancel his contract and that this will take 20 days. No, problem, all things come to those who wait. 20 days later I ring EPM and make my request and get quoted 78,000 pesos for an internet/cable/telephone package. But, wait the ‘system’ is down, so I have to call back later. EPM is seemingly unable to pick up the phone for 3 days, but finally, I get t ...
So, I’m about to enter the dark world of the Colombian tax system. By that, I mean, I wish to register my business and start paying tax. Is this a simple process? To be honest, I know nothing, except everyone tells me I would be crazy to pay tax. For example, my first question is… I understand I can register my company as an ‘individual’ or as a ‘company’. I’m not clear as to the difference, though I’m told there may be some big implications in terms of tax payments. So ...
Excellent location, just above Oviedo, easy walking distance to Parque Lleras, etc. Spacious apartment, 128m2, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and additional visitors’ toilet. The slightly larger room with excellent view is going for 475,000 pesos per month. The slightly smaller room is going for 400,000 pesos per month. Prices include all bills. I’m in the process of furnishing it, at the moment it has a brand new fridge/freezer, washing machine, small table on the balcony, oh and obviousl ...
I thought i'd post this summary of my experience to help anyone who intends to buy property in Colombia in order to get the investment visa. It's not bullet proof, but it all helps. DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO BUY Find a good agent. Personally, I used a guy called Mauricio Uribe in Medellín. He was able to show me lots of properties in a short space of time. I thoroughly recommend him, though his English is still at basic level. Contact me for his details. After a while, you will start ...
The story so far… - I bought an apartment for about $100K - When the money entered Colombia I registered it with form 4 (not 5) - I then sent form 11 to Banco de Republic in Bogotá. - Banco de Republic have now signed the form and sent it back to me For those that have successfully completed this process… what happens next? - Go to Banco de Republic in Medellín, with all my paperwork, and get another certificate. Will I get this certificate immediately? What is it called? - Go ...
Room for rent in lovely apartment in Medellin. 500,000 pesos per month including all bills. Contact me for more details. Usher
OK, I know this is very vague... but... I have a really nice 3 bed, 8th floor apartment in Poblado, Medellin (128m2), in a lovely street 5 minutes above Oviedo. I want to rent out 1 room. The room has its own bathroom (seperate) and own parking. The downside is that the apartment is not very well furnished, though things will improve poco y poco. How much can I rent this for per month? The price will include all bills, etc. - Usher ...
Well, i've been teaching English for sometime now... though only for a few months in Medellin. Perhaps, we would all benefit by sharing some of our experiences. I would be interested to know... How much do you make per hour here for private classes? Do you tend to get your own clients or are you being paid by a company? Do you have many problems with clients cancelling classes? Thanks Usher ...
I want to escape Medellin for the weekend. What are the best villages outside the city (1 or 2 hours away)? Ideally, something colonial and with a river, so I can catch a fish, light a fire and chill out. Oh, and safe of course. Usher ...
Where does this work come from? In England we say 'Roundabout'. But, everywhere in Medellin I hear this word. Another unecessary change in lingo from the US? I didnt think America had Roundabouts?
I have been using PBH for the last 7 months.. and I have only just realised there is seperate page for active posts. OK, so I may be a little dim, but my point is... as a result... when my posts were no longer visible on the homepage or certainly, several pages away, I tended to give up on them... as its not worth hunting them down just in case there is a new comment... Wouldnt the active posts page serve as a better homepage... as it will inevitably include all new posts... + all the lates ...
Another day... another nightmare... So, I have signed a pre-purchase contract on a property in Medellin... my $100k has finally arrived in Colombia... i'm just about to buy the property... And... the Banco de Republica have just told me that while I can buy the property, they wont give me residency (the main/only reason i'm buying the property) because I have already been here 6 months +. I was on a a tourist visa for 6 months and now i'm on a student visa until Nov. This is the THE mo ...

Anyone know where I can play Squash in Medellin. Ideally in Poblado. Also, if you want a squash partner, please get in touch. Usher
I have a bank account with BBVA here in Colombia. I need to transfer a large sum of money from Europe asap. However, my bank in Europe insists I need to provide them with an IBAN number, amongst other types of information. Unfortunately, BBVA seem to have no knowledge of this. They tell me that the basic bank details, plus the Swift number should be sufficient. What to do? Usher ...
I intend to buy an apartment here for $100,000 in order to obtain residency. So, I cannot pay less than this amount, and I don't have a penny more to spend. Unfortunately, the peso seems so volatile at the moment, that there is a good chance that, after making an offer, I will attempt to transfer the money only to find I have a lot more or a lot less money than 3 days earlier. So... given that I dont have a bank account here... is there another way to convert my money to pesos now, so I k ...
Pros and cons for living/working long-term in these places... ?
I want to buy an apartment in Medellín. I have 3 questions. 1. Which is better, Poblado, Laureles or some other place? 2. Where is the best place to browse property? I know some websites, but there are not many properties to view. Is it a case of looking in El Colombiano? 3. As in England, is it acceptable to make an offer well below the asking price? Many thanks - Usher ...
I have been in Colombia for 7 months and I’m now on a student visa, but I’ve just found out that I should have got a Cedular de Extranjero some time ago… in fact, apparently I will now need to pay a fine. Some questions… How much is the fine likely to be? Do I go to DAS or the ministry of foreign affairs? What documents do I need in order to acquire a Cedular de extranjero? Can I get it the same day? How long will I get it for, only for as long as my current student visa? Do I n ...
So, I’ve given up trying to get a business visa because it requires a 45 million peso investment and is a lot of time and hassle. Instead, I will buy property for $100,000 and get an investment visa. My question is… Once I’ve got the residency visa by buying property and I want to run my own business, is it a simple case of just registering the company at the Chamber of Commerce? Obviously, I don’t want to go through all of this, only to discover that I STILL need the annoying b ...
I’m moving from Bogotá to Medellin next week. If anyone has a cheap room or apartment to rent, ideally with internet, furniture, etc. please let me know asap. Thanks
I’m considering buying a flat in Medellín for $100,000 in order to get residency. However, money is a bit tight, and I need to find out, what other costs I will incur in this process.
For those that have done something similar, can you give me a rough figure for all the other legal costs, i.e. lawyers, solicitors, everything!
Also, if anyone can recommend a good property agent in Medellín, that would be great.
Thanks ...
OK, i'm talking more specifically about quality of life as an English teacher. Has anyone tried both. Has anyone tried to setup a business in Medellin and found it difficult? I currently teach English in Bogota. There seems to be alot of work, but I can't help feel I would be happier in Medellin. ...
