aldb wrote: "and press react immediatly when a Israeli our a Palestinian is killed in the West Bank but ignore more men and women die in Colombia every day because of the war;" Sure there are elements which try to make the conflict in the middle east the most important. Europe is nearby, the USA is especially interested because of the wealthy jewish elite living in the USA which cannot be disappointed, so what do you expect. Colombia is nothing compared to that. Only some colombian workers living in the USA, not much business interest from all sides in Colombia and whe world perceives Colombia only as major drug producing country with nothing else there and with Hollywood underming the reputation of Colombia even further by displaying drug gangs and assassins in the USA mainly as being Colombians. And then there are naturally also all the other conflicts/problems like in Somalia, Zimbabwe, Ivory coast, Kashmir, Liberia, Congo Chechnia..... Also here no real solutions are being sought beacuse for the USA there areas dont promise lucrative business, the Europeans are careful not to be involved too much and in the countries themselves people have to suffer. aldb,
are you AB's friend?
Anyway, if someone wants to create problems then that person would do it because of any reason, because of a song or even because today the sun doesnt shine.
Some people have simply too much testosterone in their blood and are too power hungry which makes it difficult to get along with that kind of people.
Still, peace is always negotiable, with a positive outcome for all parties. For that I would leave the gringos out of the game. They have nothing to do with it and they are also not helpful. Writing gringos I mean the Estadounidenses.

Humanity and humanitarian exchange is certainly acceptable.
It is only not acceptable for those who can make their mark through armed conflict. Like THE USA who always like to bully their way through, they earn money through war, because weapons are bought in the USA.
Uribe might not be interested in the release of I. Betancourt at this time because then his re-election might be in danger.

Both sides have to change their mindset before peace is possible. People just have to 'want' to find a solution then they can find one.
I would not mind having the Bolivarian party playing a role in Colombian politics, but then the FARC also has to act the way so that someone would elect them, then they have to show that they can really help to create a better future for all Colombians.

Re Marquez comment: "those mortars we fired at his inaugeration that killed more than a dozen people," Guess the attack was badly planned, just killed a bunch of innocent people, most probably mainly poor ones. Seems that comment was mainly meant to show off, but in fact they have embarrassed themselves. At the end you see again: Everyone including Uribe waving around with huge words and what they can do. Everywhere a lot of fighting spirit. This way Colombia surely doesnt find peace. Guess if the FARC hate Uribe so much, then it would be better to set Ingrid B free before the elections. Thats how they might be able to get rid of him. On the other hand: what would happen if Ingrid B would be elected as President?? UMM

I know, also the gringos think violence is the solution for everything, but it is not. Also in Colombia people easily get angry because of small matters. People have to learn to negotiate and also to compromise. Sometimes COMPROMISE sounds negative., but at the end it can be someting positive for all parties. I am also against the extradition of Paramilitares or FARC or ELN to the USA. If someone has comitted a crime in Colombia then the process has to be made against these people in Colombia. The USA has no say in it whatsoever. Its non of their business. For the ones which can or want to be educated I would put up a centre for re-education and re-integration instead of prison. UMM

I dont know why anyone is scared of the FARC or of going to Caqueta or so. I have been to San Vicente del Caguan. I have talked to some people of the Farc and they didnt do anything to me. I have met more people of the FARC on my trip from Bucaramanga to Berrancabermeja. Also there they didnt do anything to me. Guess at the end it always depends on how you talk to the people. UMM

If without negotiation nothing would happen, then it is better that someone negotiates.
If one person can be freed than it is better than none.
If two persons can be freed then it is better than one.
At the end it does not matter who or which country tries to free the people as long as there is reasonable hope that they can be freed.

You can do that by using normal HTML tags.

Firstly I have not posted this as political post beacuse freeing of hostages is not necessarily political.
Secondly, its is NOT a "not-colombian" threat because IB has been kidnapped in Colombia nad in Colombia every day people are still kidnapped, as if it would help doing so.
the FARC, Marxist rebels, do that often although that Carlos Marx did not teach that kind of practices. Carlos Marx would probably turn around in his grave if he could see what has become out of his movement.

I have just spoken to a URIBE hater in Santa Marta, one of my friends, who is artesano.

Every politician is scared that someone else might take votes away from him.
If you dont know whether you got 50% or not, or if you would have to go into a re-run, then better dont have too much competition or people who take votes away from you.
Anyway, I heard the song yesterday on Radio Caracol where they seemed to promote it. So, it has nothing to do with french. Only thing is: I wanted the song and I tried to find it.

Better to help one person which has been kidnapped than helping none.
Better helping two people who have been kidnapped than helping one.

Sure, Ingrid Betancourt posed a threat to A. Uribes candidacy. Still I cant imagine he has something to do with the matter or that he is not interested in her release.
Sure there are many people still kidnapped and all should be freed, but as it is like always: if the 'man on the street' is kidnapped, noone cares, except his family.
If someone prominent is kidnapped then you can get a campaign rolling.

But I see, there are still many 'french haters' here ;).
Most government havent done always everything right and everywhere you find that self interest, but there is no government around which has done as much wrong as the Bush regime.

umm comments on Amazon basin trips

In Leticia itself are a lot of agencies which allow you trips into the jungle.
Even the hotels there have often offers.
Just book a hotel there from Bogota and fly over.
Leticia is small and when you walk down to the street which is parallel/near by the river, there are a couple of agencies.

When you walk over the green border to Tabatinga, there you can even check in on a boat which takes you down the river to Manaus and so.

At the end everyone craves for money and for power.
The easier accessible it is the better.
Everyone gets tempted to make the quick buck and everyone in power tries to stay there.
People only think of themselves and not of the others.
Thats why nothing will ever 100% work.
Bush is the same as Uribe or Mahatir or Mugabe or anyone else. Only some are more clumsy in their craving for power and wealth than others.

Bush thought that two terms are not enough and Uribe thought one term is not enough. Well, two terms sounds reasonable, but you see the tendency.

umm comments on Bogota ranked 210 out of 215 for safety

you know, a former girlfriend of mine got in her mind that she wants to move from Medallo to L.A. I recommended her not to do that. Its just too dangerous in L.A. I said to her: if she wants to get robbed or killed then she can go, but better stay in Medellin. Its much safer.

umm comments on Bogota ranked 210 out of 215 for safety

I also think that that statistics up thgere is rigged by the gringos just to make Colombia look bad, although maybe its ok if they put the ranking upside down.
The EEUU is by far more dangerous place but they keep many info under wraps so that the world doesnt know about it.

umm comments on Bogota ranked 210 out of 215 for safety

I just came back from Vietnam, guess that ranks 347 and Afghanistan 593 in that list.

"while Atlanta had the lowest U.S. ranking at 90." guess thats a typo. It must be 900

Even at the bank, you make a small mistake like a wrong date, the 7th instead of the 1st, you try to make a 7 out of the 1, they dont accept it. Then you have to fill in everything again.
For some reason everyone is a bit uptight about making even small mistakes.

BTW, I agree with your wife, Bogota is too cold.

If someone wants to have mild and pleasant weather then Medallo (Medellin) would be the best choice.

umm comments on Weather in Bogota

Bogota has usually between 16-20 degC during the day and 5 - 10 degC during the night.
84 degrees??? cant be, not even in the Sahara desert you get that kind of temperature.
Oh, you mean Fahrenheit???? 84F???? I have seen that also here on TV, people just dont know what they are talking about. They think: tropics....is 33 degC....then they start guessing instead of knowing. Then they forget that Bog is in the mountains.

Greenday, I dont think you kn Greenday, I dont think you know what you are talking about.
There are dying loads of children in shooting sprees in the USA, just because another idiot who could buy a gun legally freaked out.
You better get over it. Only a strict gun control, which means only guns in the hands of the law inforcement is the solution and a death penalty for everyone else who is caught with a gun or any other deadly weapon.

I am so tired of all these stupid, bigmouth, know it all better, imperialistic US freaks. I got the impression that half of the USA has that BUSH syndrome, 'we know it all' and 'we want to show the world what is the best thing to do' and the USA doesnt know SHIT.

Comedian?
well, I would like to be one but guess I am too serious for that. jajajaja
In fact, if you believe it or not, I have been a couple of times to the USA and I always got warnings from locals where better not to go.
Thats usually the downtown area of every major city in the USA.
I had never problems in downtown Bogota oder Cali or Medellin or....
but I had then people telling me in the USA: better dont do to downtown Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, NY...because you might get robbed or even killed. And always walk with you back towards a wall.
Leading to the conclusion: The USA is by far more dangerous than Colombia.
In Colombia there are not sooo many people having weapons but in the USA you are entitled to have one:

You come to the store:
"I want to buy a gun"
"did you commit any crimes before?"
"No, not yet."
"OK, there you are"

Mabe we can start talking about security/danger in the USA as soon as the posession of weapons there is prohibited.

First of all, you should read post which have previoulsy be brought up here in this forum.
Secondly, Colombia is safer than going to the USA where it is really not safe. In the USA you get assaulted killed robbed...too many junkies and too many arms around, but what do you expect in a country where arms are legalized because of certain interest groups.
Thirdly, tell your mom to shup up and 'no seas tan marica'
