True, Colombians, who I started working with in New York City in the 1970s (Oh you're from that awful dangerous place? "Yep and I got more street smarts in my little finger than you have in whole body Mr. or Ms. Gringo from small town America..now in a Meth epedimic anyway!!!!) and they worked me "under the table" get a bum rap, as do some Central and South Americans in México, however the worst problems I have encountered with prejudice against "this or that country" is from "travelers" from USA and northern Europe..when I lived in Guatemala long haired looney leftists in Antigua were spitting on El Salvadorians on vacation and one jumped me ON MY PROPERTY sob was handcuffed and in jail tout suite, because he overheard me tell a friend I was moving to El Salvador! All tehse people are ignorant. Ignore them. They love a reaction so if you turn your back and if f2f also put your fingers in ears and walk away it turns their hatred into mush, anyway without all the consumers in States, Canada, etc. there would be no market, I'm drug and booze free, in recovery a long time and proud of it. I can travel to any small town in Colombia and within 2 days have made friends with the good half of the town..also got a sense of humor and know how to make people..especially women,,laugh en español and languages other than English. Keep your drugs and your bs opinions off my property please! In 1983 visited Soviet Union with 2 exchange students living there from Ghana, they showed me "Socialist Paradise" no prejudice???? They lived in segregated dorms, were insulted and mocked and called monkeys on the streets all the time and I was called a n----------- lover!!! My first visit to Colombia was 1971 via Tica Bus from El Salvador and Ferry from Panama with a Colombian friend..what hospitality!!!!!! Saludos.

tropicaltimes comments on Travel Tips for Colombia or anywhere in Latin America

I used to be a guide/interpreter in Central America for years, residency, national plates, knew people enroute and at destinations, of course the trips were in a vehicle point A to B to C. In these days As a resident who blends in, I most always spend time with either local friends who drive or solo when I take public transportation, once some budget travelers wanted me to accompany them on the "chicken bus" to a destination I knew well..uh uh..low profile goes to NO profile!!! Especially if there is an attractive white woman aboard! If visitors do come as clients, there are owner drivers or "friends" (or those who THINK they are) from abroad must provide either rent a car, driver and car or taxi plus lunch then I'll gladly guide them around a day or two! All common sense. Street smarts.
