traveler803 comments on HELP WITH PLACE TO STAY IN BOGOTA! PLEASE!

My suggestion would also be Platypus. German has a place I've rented for several weeks before and it would accomadate several people together in one apartment...in Platypus II...just down the street from Platypus I (office, etc.). German is of great help to foreigners...and can set you out to lots of places in Bogota and Colombia. Tell him Daryl Meyer suggested Platypus and the same apartment I've used there. Best of luck!

traveler803 comments on Seeking recommendations on short term housing in Bogota

Steph.....Best recommendation I can give a newcomer to Bogota is Platypus...located in the La Candelaria....owner is German...speaks several languages and is a really really good fella and very helpful. Tell him Daryl Meyer from the US recommended him and his hostel. Good luck!!

traveler803 comments on Ok - another safety question

Andersons Sorry for the "repeat" Portena...posted the second time before checking the second page to see the first post in....
The food at Andersons is norte americano...steaks, free range chicken, excellent chilean salmon, very good wine (even an excellent California white when I was there last) and a banana fosters dessert everyone really liked...I was there last about three weeks ago. Check it out...hope you enjoy it as much as I do and hope you enjoy Bogota.
The folks at Andersons will be able to answer a lot of your questions about La Candelaria, safety precautions, etc. Have fun!!

Restaurante Portena....theres a nice little restaurant right around the corner from Hotel de La Opera...open for lunch M-S and I believe for dinner on Friday nights...Andersons....on the other side of the street from the hotel..carrere 6 between 10th and 11th. It is owned by a young gringo and his colombian wife...great food...excellent wine selection and very friendly service. They live ...and obviously work...in the La Candalaria and can answer a lot of your questions. I've seen locals and foriegners there...great place to eat and hang out. Have a great time in Bogota...I enjoy myself there more and more each time I'm there.

Cafe y comida excelente Portena.....just around the corner from Hotel de La Opera and across the street is a small but nice restaurant...Andersons.....has great food, friendly service from a young gringo and his Colombian wife. You'll enjoy yourself and they will be more than happy to answer all your questions about La Candalaria...they actually live and work there. They've been a great help to me and I've eaten there several times there during my recent trips to Bogota.

I really like Bogota.. but you're right.. the weather is definitely NOT the most desireable, lots of rain and few days that it is sunny ALL day. But there are a lot of good things about the city.
I usually stay there a month at a time and are often asked by locals if I feel the city is dangerous. My reply is that the two most dangerous things in the city are the holes in the sidewalks (thanks to theives lifting the utility covers on the sidewalks) and the taxis.. Step off the curb at the wrong moment and it could be your last on earth. The smog may get you slowly but the taxis could get you in a heart beat. I was told by a local the other day.. the city is going to crack down on the smokey buses and trucks and add to the transmilenio line... any one else hear this.
I'll return to Bogota in August for a month of so.... not the perfect time of year weather wise but I bet it will still be an enjoyable time.. For the most part... I've found the people very warm and the culture is refreshing. Yeah you've got to be on your toes and don't let yourself be in the wrong areas at night... but what US city isn't just the same regarding that aspect.

Platypus I've stayed at Platypus twice and have enjoyed it immensely. German is a super helpful guy as well as his staff. Nothing but good to say about them.

I get through Kearney once in a while. It would be great to meet your friends. Do you think they'd have any Colombian friends in the eastern end of the state??? Where do you live MaG?? Thanks

traveler803 comments on You dropped everything and relocated to Colombia

Other Countries?? Am thoroughly enjoying going through these responses as I've just returned from being in Bogota for almost a month where my son (US) has just married a Colombian and will soon be opening his own North American style restaurant.
I enjoyed Bogota in many different ways even though starting a business there does have its frustrations compared to starting one here in the US.
However, I'm curious as to what other countries/cities you'd suggest regarding retirement outside the US. Really enjoy this forum. Thanks

traveler803 comments on Excellent Spanish/English Computer Translation program!

Computer Program B Bruce - How has your email responses been from your Colombian friends when you've used the Topics Entertainment program?? Have they responded that your emails were easy to understand or did they have problems?? Thanks for your help. - Traveler

traveler803 comments on Excellent Spanish/English Computer Translation program!

Translation Program B Bruce - Thanks for the tip, can you order this online here in the US?? Just returned from Bogota and would really like to continue learning Spanish and converse via email with friends and business associates I developed while in Bogota. Thanks for the help.

Internet service Just returned from almost a month in Bogota. My son applied for internet service while I was there from ETB. The hostel where I stayed used internet service where you could also call long distance (international) via your internet connection. I believe it's going to be about $75 (US) per month to have the long distance service included.
