Spirit Airline Check-In Question - FLL/CTG

Got a question about this, for those who've already travelled on Spirit to Colombia from FLL. Were you able to check-in online to CTG or BOG? Or, were you able to use kiosk check-in in FLL? Or, did you have to use the dreaded check-in desk? I'm not checking in any bags. Ideally, I just want to show up and head to the kiosks, if needed, and/or straight to security. Again, no bags to check in. Anyone with experience on Spirit? ...

Colombian Movies - Karrma (El peso de tus actos) & Buscando A Miguel

Has anyone here seen Karmma, El Peso de tus actos (2006)? How about Buscando A Miguel (Aug. 2007)? Karmma is supposedly based on a real-life kidnapping of a Colombian finca owner somewhere between Villavicencio and Bogota in the late 1990s. The twist is that the secuestro is unknowingly planned by the finca owner's own son, who is the leader of a kidnapping squad. The finca owner is subsequently delivered to FARC. Pretty interesting story as it shows another aspect of what keeps FARC ...

Hotels in Villavicencio

I've got a list of hotels there, but have no basis on which hotels are well-located, recommendable, and reasonably priced. Before I start calling the list of over 100 hotels (of course, the calls probably won't last past 5), I figured I'd ask the board for help on the matter.

Can anyone recommend any hotels in Villavo? ...

Condolences to Elmo

All jokes and potential jokes aside. Out of respect for him and his family, I cannot nor will not be more specific. That's his call.

Our esteemed writer extraordinaire, source of many a daytime laugh, and PBH's supreme BS'er has suffered the loss of someone very close and dear to him. Some of us were aware of the personal challenges he had been facing over the past couple of months, yet here he continued to provide us with a few laughs. It came to an end this past weekend. Car bomb in Cali kills 5 today

Be careful out. 2 bombs in 3 days, leading up to Uribe's inaugeration on August 7. Probably more to come.

More of Colombia's 'disappeared' found

I recall reading on here that some people actually were choosing one side (AUC) over the other (FARC), when both were pretty dirty. Interesting, but nonetheless, tragic.

Study: Latinos bring view of blacks

Found this article today while browsing around, figured I'd post it here. What I found most interesting was perception. I think it does indeed pertain to Colombia, as I've had my share of "experiences." Thankfully, the better experiences greatly outweigh the negative ones. Some of them are pretty funny. One day, I'll share. LOL!!!

Feel free to coment on this if you'd like, just keep it civil. No bashing.

Anyone ever hear of this movie "La Sombra del Caminante" by Ciro Guerra?

It was Colombia's submission to be considered for the foreign-language Oscar award. I've never heard of it, nor seen it advertised while I went to the movies in Colombia. Anyone know what it's about?

Good or Bad for Colombia? Venezuela's Chavez Expands Oil Initiative

Just want your opinions on this. I think it would be a great thing for South America as a whole. Maybe things like this will foster better relations between the countries. Please no diatribes on Chavez. Just trying to focus on this idea.

Avianca - Domestic So Expensive?

Has anyone else noticed that Avianca's domestic fare prices have become way more expensive?

For instance, last year September, I flew Bogota to Barranquilla for approx $100-120/rt, purchasing the ticket a week before I flew. I just looked at the same route, and it's $202/rt.

Anyone have an idea what's up with this? I've noticed the prices rising throughout the year. It will actually cost me more to fly from Bogota to Barranquilla, than it will to fly from Atlanta ( ...

Article on new wave of Colombian writers

"Amar Es Mas Dificil Que Matar"

I just got back from Medellin today and saw this movie last night. Definitely my kind of movie!!! Well done movie shot in Medellin. On scenery alone, you get a stark dose of the disparity in the barrios of Medellin, from Poblado to the poorer areas on the hills.

I won't spill the beans on the movie plot at all, at this moment. I will warn that it is a p ...

Hey Colombians and others, Let's gang up on Mexico

Just cancelled my trip to Cancun. It's so dangerous there. All the random killings. This doesn't even go into the kidnapping problem in Mexico City. LOL!!!

Why should Colombia get all the grief? Mexico's been getting a free pass on this for too long. Plus, those bastards recently tried to make Black Americans AND Colombians the butt of their punchlines. Flame on baby.

Avianca Question - Sobrecargoes

Anyone know what this charge is?

I do not remember it prior to my last trip last week. It's an additional charge on tickets. Here are all of the current charges (sample RT to Barranquilla three weeks in advance) on an Avianca ticket.

Sobrecargoes - COP52.000
IVA - COP51.520

Check Out Ecuador growing a pair

I really applaud them for standing up for themselves!!! Talk about buying votes???

As bad as they got it, they made the decision to not be bought off by Washington anymore. I wish other countries (ummm,ummm...need to clear my throat here) would take the same stand and the responsibility and challenge of such actions. Will Colombia, under Uribe or whoever, ever take the same stand at any point?

Carnaval Queen Question

While in Barranquilla the last time, I had an interesting conversation with one of my friends there regarding the annual Queen of the Carnaval.

I found out that there are usually 2 Carnaval queens. One that the "people of the barrios" decide, and one that is "chosen" by the money folks of El Norte/El Prado.

This conversation began when I mentioned that the sister of my ex-novia in BAQ was the queen of queens for the Carnaval in the past. Meaning that, of all the Ca ...

Short-term Apt Rental in Medellin (Poblado) - 4-5 days

I already did a search and did not see where anyone addressed this area. Mostly regarding long-term (1 month+) rentals.

Does anyone specifically know of any decent apartments/hotels in Poblabo for under COP$140.000/nite? It would be for 4-5 days. Unable to locate anything in El Colombiano so far either.

I was in Medellin last month and stayed at Hotel/Edificio Torre Poblado for COP$140.000/nite. I know that was a lot, but wasn't trying to stay in the Playboy Pentho ...

Fed Up with Pingo (PIN-less dialing service)

Anyone else who is using Pingo (www.pingo.com) experiencing an increase in dropped calls to Colombia?

In my eagerness to switch to a PIN-less dialing service, I've now used VMACorp & Pingo. Both have lately produced a horrible record of dropped calls. I chose Pingo on recommendations/good experienced from members of this board. My experience has been pretty different.

I actually switched from VMACorp to Pingo. For the 1st week, Pingo was fine. Lately, every other c ...

US Dollar strengthening against COP? COP 2404 to $1 USD

Just checked this today 12:00 p.m. EST.

Is this an aberration? The COP to USD exchange rate hasn't been over 2400 to $1 in several months. Any guesses why? Or any predictions on the trend?

Whatever the case, I just hope that if the COP continues to weaken against the USD, Colombia doesn't lose its mind and start dollarizing things. ...

Isla Rosario trip

Hey folks-

I'm heading down to CTG for about 3 days, and want to do a day trip over to the Islas Rosario with the lady. Enjoy some beach time, eat lunch, drink, swim, otherwise just be lazy. Checked the site and didn't find much info on this specifically, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Anyone know the approx. cost of the boat ride over there (and back) from mainland CTG, where to catch the boat, best beach to hit, any potential local travel agents who could assist ...

Any info on Hotel El Dorado en BAQ?

Anyone have any info or experience with Hotel El Dorado (calle 79 carrera 42) in BAQ? Here's a quick rundown on what I've gathered about it:

- simple room costs COP$74.900

How is New Year's Eve in Bogota?

Thinking of doing NYE there this year. I'd prefer other cities, but Avianca is quoting approx. $200+ for trips from BOG to BAQ/CTG. Therefore, will probably just do Bogota for a few days.

Any suggestions regarding NYE in BOG??? ...

Boob Jobs - what do you think?

I pretty much already made my mind up on this, but just wanted to kick this around here to see what others think.

My just-about-to-be Colombian ex-novia has it stuck in her head that she wants to get breast implants. It's her goal, her dream. I hear it's a common thing in Colombia, but in my mind, it's not for any girlfriend/future spouse of mine. It's a relationship-killer for me. And she's unrelenting on this, nor willing to hear my opinion.

It's her money, and it ...

Heading to La Troja!!!!!!!!!

Thanks ElMo!!!

Mentioned going to La Troja to my novia, and at first, she was horrified. "I'm not going there....I would never want to be seen there....you may have problems....there are prostitutes there. Do you want one?..." etc.

Of course, being the gossip that she is, she told her mother and father about it, along with her friends. Apparently, her mom and pops laugh at her pretty long and hard.

Get this, we're all going there on Friday night, al ...
