MDE-CTG bus problems

Apparently this trip has become unsafe because of cocaine cowboy activity. My novia was planning to join me in Cartagena for a few days. She was going to take the bus tonight from Medellín. She called last night to tell me that she can't make the trip tonight. Anyone else hear anything? She hopes to catch a bus when she can. She has a fear of flying. ...

Oliver Stone in Colombia

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071230/ap_on_en_mo/colomba_hostages_stone Among his pearls of wisdom, "I have no illusions about the FARC, but it looks like they are a peasant army fighting for a decent living," and 'When asked if he's concerned the heavily armed guerrillas could turn on him, he joked: "Well, if they took us, they would be swapping three hostages for 10," referring to himself and observers from five Latin America countries, France and Switzerland, along to supervise the releas ...

Theft from my novia's Bancolombia account

It seems that a bit of money is missing, several million pesos. I have the bank-stamped receipts showing the deposits. Somehow those deposits were never credited. Now Bancolombia says that it will take up to 6 months to credit the missing money. WTF? Are you guys nuts? I have the evidence of my deposits. How does this become my problem? Actually my back end is getting a little raw. This is the third institutional theft of my money in Colombia in the last 2 years. The other 2 inst ...

Colombian bank fees

I just discovered that BBVA is charging me 7200 pesos per month for the priviledge of having them use my money. So far my account has been debited for this monthly charge and for getting an ATM card, and there were 2 small charges for taxes. There was no interest credited. I have no check-writing priviledges. My novia's Bancolombia account costs her 12K per month. She doesn't even earn 20K per day. Talk about uncompetitive sons of bitches. Bienvenidos a Colombia. I get 4.75% intere ...

Colombian Mindfuck #683

Having heard horror stories about attempts to get post-pay cell plans, I put this off for years. My novia called Comcel to ask about converting to post-pay. They said that there would be no problem, just bring copies of our cedulas. In our first attempt, they refused to give any credit for our pre-pay balances. So we used the balances and went back. This time they said that they would have to have someone personally visit us in our apartment. Then we could come back a third time to s ...

I got an E-mail from Peter.

"Please change your profile picture, it's not appropriate." I will comply in a few days. It is Peter's site. I, for one, need some guidance on what is appropriate.

Madison, WI, Colombian Independence

Awhile back someone asked about this. It is held on July 22 this year. Here is a link for Colombianos in Wisconsin: http://www.colombianosenwisconsin.com/

Please fix the home page.

I will not scroll left and right to read the posts.

More idiot posters

I wasn't sorry to see the "Idiot Gringo" thread locked and would not have been sorry to see it deleted. I guess that I'm just becoming less and less tolerant in my old age.

There are people of every gender, color, religion, and national origin that I do not care for. It may be less politically incorrect for whatever reason to single out Gringos or men for ridicule. But I just don't care for any of this garbage. ...

Frequent flyer Avianca

If you have 60% of the miles needed to get a flight, you can buy the remainder of the miles. This may not be news to FF vets, but it was to me.

I booked MIA-CTG leaving in Oct. and returning in May for US$210. The normal price for that trip is around US$1300 because it is over 6 months. I had 18,000 miles and had to buy 12,000.

Interestingly, I checked that flight on Orbitz. The direct flights were $1300. However, if you booked one direct flight and had one sto ...

TRM(2620) vs. Interbank(2733)

Today El Universal lists the TRM at 2620 COP to the US dollar. OANDA lists the interbank rate at 2733. I know what the Interbank rate is. And it seems that I usually get just less than the Interbank rate on my ATM withdrawals.

What is the TRM? Seems that these two numbers were closer a month ago. ...

Screwed by Avianca - again

I called today to confirm my flight from CTG to MDE on Friday. I booked and paid for this flight in November. They told me that I had called in February and cancelled the flight. I had not. They offered to re-book the flight that I had never cancelled for another 100,000 COP.

WTF?

I paid the 100K, but I'm not done complaining.

Beat this, Morph. ...

Banking

I hold a Rentista VISA, own my apartment, and have lived in Cartagena for three years. Yesterday I tried to open an account at Conavi. They said that they needed proof of financial stability. I told them that I had supplied that proof to the Colombian government in order to get my VISA. That was not good enough.

I had to supply them with a copy of the Colombian tax return that I had filed this year AND get a letter from the accountant who did the return attesting to my financi ...

Embassy message for American citizens in Colombia

I live in Cartagena and got this by E-mail today:

The following message from the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá is for all American citizens traveling in or living in Colombia. Please pass to other American citizens in Colombia.

Taxi crime in Colombia

MDE armed robbery

A good Gringo friend who owns a house near Parque Lleras taxied in from the airport on Wed. night around 9:00
pm. Two guys on a motorcycle pulled up alongside the cab with a gun. The cabbie pulled over. My friend thinks that the cabbie was in on it. The two robbers jumped into the cab and grabbed his watch and wallet. One took the wheel and took off like a bat out of hell. The first time the cab slowed down enough, my friend jumped out and ran. He believed that they were going to ...

Taxi fare from CTG to BAQ

In case the Invertours van doesn't show up on Thursday, I might end up in a taxi to BAQ. Does anyone have an idea what a taxi ride from CTG to BAQ costs?

Las reinas estan aqui en Cartagena ahora

I was sitting in front of my building watching the world(read chicas) go by. What do I see but a bus escorted by three police cars with lights flashing. They pull up to the Hilton four buildings down. The newpaper confims my suspicion. Twenty one of Colombia's finest have arrived for the competition.

Let the party begin-tomorrow of course. The election tomorrow has the town closed until tomorrow evening. ...

Re: Advice needed

Guess I knew that last night's creation would bite the dust. I want to thank all the participants. I enjoyed that immensely.

Bus trip from MDE to CLO

Just figured out how to use Yahoo! photos, sort of. So I uploaded some photos of my January bus trip. I spent two nights in Guarne, one night each in Manizales, Pereira and Armenia, two nights in Cali, and three nights in Medellin.

Here's the link http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/tysvertomtom/album?.dir=741a&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos ...

Rentist (TS) VISA

My attorneys, Prieto & Carrizosa in Bogota, advised me that I must apply for a new VISA at least 30 days before my original VISA expires. The Deputy Consul in the Chicago Embassy, Francisco Vasquez Gomez, just sent me an E-mail saying that I have to wait until my VISA expires to get a new one.

WTF?

Of course, I forwarded the E-mail to my attorneys for clarification.

I love bureaucracy. ...

Why does the "new" post link not work correctly when the new posts are on the second page or subsequent pages?

Hurricane Dennis

From Key West: "About three blocks of the tourist drag of Duval Street was under 1 foot of water."

We don't even have hurricanes in Cartagena. But several times last October and November there were two to three feet of water on the main street of Laguito for several blocks. And one foot makes news?

Here's hoping for un pocito menos this fall.

Sorry to deviate from the donkeys and gringo bashing. ...
