tlop comments on Baccarat in Bogota? NL Hold'em tournaments?

I own the Rockefeller Poker Room and Casino, rock82.com, Calle 82 No. 14-23. We have tournaments Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Cash games every night. Always a $2.000/$4.000 and often a $5.000/$5.000 or $5.000/$10.000 NL game. I would like to think we offer the friendliest environment in Bogota. I recommend play here or Jacks. Winners Group (Rock and Jazz, etc.) runs several large tournaments, but the structure isn't great and collusion is a big problem. Oh, and I book sports action, but under the table. Any questions, feel free to email me at daniel at rock82.com Thanks, Dan

tlop comments on Feeding a group of 30 in Bogota

Well, actually, yes Jonas. But I already have something arranged for tonight. I have to do it every month though, so wanted to hear if anyone had any good suggestions. And Bill, thanks for the idea, but I am afraid the food has to be served at the local business and there is nowhere close to bbq. Dan

tlop comments on PBH Poker Colombia Team (July)

Colombia, as well as all of Latin America, are very important markets to Stars at the moment. I don't think their response is to be taken negatively about Colombia, more that they are looking a website more directly focused on poker or gambling for affiliates. Dan

tlop comments on Mental: parece Hollywood pero es Colombia

Many of the actors from Mental played poker at the Rockefeller here in Bogota. I am afraid to say to say none of them were pleased with the quality of the show. However, their criticism revolved around the script and the plot, not the fact that it was shot in Colombia. In fact, the cast was in complete shock that FOX actually picked it up for a US run as well. Dan

tlop comments on Alimentarte 2008 - Bogota Food Festival 2008

This was my second year attending Alimentarte. I enoyed it and will return. That being said, it isn't what a food festival should be. All restaurants should offer small sampler plates, making it easy for a person to try several different spots. Instead, most if not all just seem to offer their standard fare. Tlop

tlop comments on Nightlife in Bogota

I believe the place you are referring to is actually Sayaca, not Socorro. Scirocco is in the Zona T. Other good places (but many probably find them very overpriced) include Alma, Gavanna, Philomena, Vinacure, Corazon, Paradiso. For cheaper fun, Galerias is a lot of fun. Specifically TonyK is good. Cuadra Picha (Primer de Mayo) is great, but can be a little intense at times. For a younger student crowd and cheap, 51st in Chapinero is recommended. Dan

Recompras, without limit. That being said, we don't have the gangster type here. Plenty of university students have won our tournaments. Hope to see you here. Dan

tlop comments on WHERE TO WATCH SUPER BOWL IN BOGOTA?

We will have it on 5 Large Screens. Also, a fair number of the spectators will have money on the line, so should be some excitement in the house. Come on down. The Rockefeller Poker Room and Casino Calle 82 No 14-23 Tel: 256 6886 Dan

tlop comments on Metro Gym Bogota

You may also want to consider Blue Gym Blue Gym is at 10 con 96. I don´t think it holds up to BodyTech, but it significantly cheaper. And...they were just bought by BodyTech. Not sure what that will mean for memberships once it changes over, but you may want to look into that as well.

GIB, thanks for the replies. I might be interested in the bar. However, you think he would rent it during Ley Seca? Also, granted I have no idea how much these things usually cost, but 800k seems a little steep?

Anyways, let me know.

Thanks again,

tlop comments on Renting a Space for a Party in Bogota

Thanks. Also should mention... I should have mentioned that I'm looking for a place for this Saturday (Ley seca). I just got back from El Edificio. The woman was very helpful, but wanted me to go and speak to the police first, to insure we would have no problems. Well, I went to the local station, explained it would be in a private building, invites only, no entry or drink charge, etc and basically got the "If no one calls, you are fine. If we show up, you are going to jail for 24 hours." The woman from El Edificio is going to follow up with me tonight, but it being in such a busy neighborhood, I doubt it is going to fly.

If anyone else has any other suggestions, maybe of a place a little more setback, I would be hugely appreciative. Anyone with a successful suggestion will surely get a couple of invites :).

Oh, the reason for all of this is I have a bunch of friends who will only be in Bogota for this weekend. I would really love to show them a decent time.

Thanks,

Tlop

tlop comments on Bogota Nightlife

Sunday through Wednesday It kills me as well that everything I know is DEAD Sunday-Wednesday. Anyone got anything?

tlop comments on

Casino Rio is the place. 122 con 19. They only offer 10,000/25,000. That place closes at 2:30 AM and then sometimes the game moves to the Rock & Jazz. A couple things:

The players are awful
The rake is beyond awful (capped at 15,000)
You only see 15-20 hands an hour
Min Buy is 200,000

Couple different rules:

The blinds act last. In other words, the large blind is the button.
The small blind can not raise preflop.

If you want a cheaper game, Casino Caribe (22 con 7), 5,000/10,000.

Enjoy,

Dan

tlop comments on casino in COL..

A little advice Although I am happy you have enjoyed success playing blackjack, unfortunately, you are wrong about it being easy to win. Unless you are an excellent card counter, every wager you make at the blackjack table has a negative expectation, regarless of the $ (or peso as it may be) value.

If you enjoy playing and don´t mind donating a little money, have fun. If you are going in their with the expectation you will generally make money, I recommend you rethink things.

Good luck.

tlop comments on How do I write a letter of invitation to get a visa for my girlfriend?

Extremely difficult Although I am far from an expert on this subject, I don't think a letter of invitation would help her, and in fact, my understading is it often hurts her...it tends to suggest there is a better chance she will overstay her tourist visa.

Unless you want to apply for a fiance visa, her "best" opportunity is just to apply for a tourist visa on her own...but unfortunately, getting that as a single girl is a little like winning Powerball.

Anyways, experts feel free to correct me if I am incorrect. Otherwise, good luck.

tlop comments on Any help on an apartment rental in Bogota?

Funny you say that. That is exactly where I lived previously (Borneo II) and probably the area where I will end up living again. There is just no street life besides that at the Centro Commerciales or if you walk down to 15.

Thanks,

Dan

tlop comments on Friendliest U.S. Bank for Colombian Travelers

ATM Fees I'm sorry, but I believe you are incorrect. There are banks which allow free international withdrawals (minus what the host Colombian bank charges). U.S. Bank is one, but unfortunately, I do not live in a state in which they have a presence.

As far as why I don't just open an account with a Colombian Bank, I plan to. However, as you may know, first you need a visa...and even then, it can take some convincing of the local branch manager. So that may take a while to get up and running

As far as Citibank, thanks for the suggestion, and I will look into it.

tlop comments on Expat Healthcare Plans

Clarification At home in the US. I assumed you had to get a specialty expat plan and not just one from Blue Cross, etc, as I thought there would be restrictions with them about you residing abroad. But from what you wrote, I am guessing I was wrong?

tlop comments on Banking in Medellin / Opening a account

Business Visa/Bank Account I am hoping to move to Colombia soon, with the intention of opening a business. If I have a business visa, will I still have a very difficult time opening and wiring money to a Colombian bank account?

Thanks,

Dan

tlop comments on Quality Enlish language Schools

My experience I taught English in Bogota for a while. I ended up working for a small private school (willing to hire me without a work Visa)that did one on one corporate gigs, but they have since closed. I made something like 15 thousand an hour, but spent a lot of unpaid time traveling from office to office.

I would encourage you to go to Berlitz. The pay isn't great, but it is a good well structured place. I interviewed there and they were very enthusiastic. Willing to sponsor you for a work visa, but you have to pay for the flight to Ecuador or Panama.

Hope this helps.

Dan

tlop comments on Girlfriend turned down for TOURIST VISA today

Untreated, what are you talking about? You either have no idea what you are talking about or things have changed since your last visit. As a U.S. Citizen, you are not allowed to accompany a Colombian to the Visa Window for his or her interview. If you try, it almost guarantees a rejection.
