tkutlow comments on motorcycling to colombia

I just moved to Pereira and would like to buy a motorcycle. I´m not a newbie. I¨ve been riding for over a decade and currently own a suzuki sv1000 in the states. I´m looking for something second hand, in half decent condition, and large enough to tour with. If anyone has any leads please send them my way. Thanks!

tkutlow comments on Work Visa Questions

I'm planning on going to the Colombia consulate in NYC this week to apply for my work visa. If everything goes well, how long should it take?

Can anyone recommend a Colombia tour book? I did a search and found only one book in print - by Lonely Planet. The reviews were quite poor.

tkutlow comments on Pereira or Cali? Etc...

I'll be moving to Periera the end of July (2007). I'm not concerned that it will be nice. I've learned that there are things to admire and appreciate no matter where you are. It's really all in your attitude.

tkutlow comments on Teaching English in Cartagena?

I'll be teaching science at an international school in Pereira. I wouldn't mind making some extra pesos teaching English. BTW, that's exactly what I've been doing this past school year (in Taiwan).

In Taiwan it is popular for families to hire a private tutor for their children. What about Colombia? If so, what is a reasonable amount to ask? I typically tutor my students once a week for 90 minutes.

tkutlow comments on Water

There's a product sold at pet stores that removes chlorine. It's marketed to owners of aquariums and I don't know if it's safe for consumption. But it might be worth looking in to.

Hi.
I was reading that you've been to Bolivia. I'm considering a job in Santa Cruz. What is your opinion of Bolivians? Are they friendly? What about the food? Are the women attractive?

what about pepper spray? I asked this question before but never got a definitive answer. Is pepper spray legal in Colombia?

tkutlow comments on I almost got shot! be careful out there!

a little concerned I've read all the posts in this thread and can't help but be a little concerned. I'll be moving to Periera the end of July '07. I wear a gold chain around my neck. I'm almost forty and I've been wearing it for the past 20 years, never taking it off. Should I leave this in the U.S.? I also wear a watch. It's worth about $200. And a ring worth about $600. Would it be unwise to wear these?

Lastly, is pepper spray legal in Colombia? Perhaps it would be a good idea to carry some.

tkutlow comments on Cost of Living for 1 Month in Colombia

Thanks everyone Thanks to everyone that took the time to comment. I hope we can meet when I move to Periera.

tkutlow comments on Cost of Living for 1 Month in Colombia

I should have explained something Tomtom33 and others: I should have explained that I'm a school teacher in the U.S. As a teacher in the US I was making twice that amount but I wasn't able to make much of a dent in my Visa bill due to the high cost of living. What I'm really asking is: Is the salary good relative to the cost of living in Colombia? Ideally I'd like to send 200-300 dollars home every month. Is that possible or am I kidding myself?

Is this a good salary? I have a question along the same lines as the original post:

I have a job offer in Periera. Its 2,340,000 plus a free apartment (not including internet or cable TV). How comfortably will I be able to live? I'm concerned about paying off my American credit card bill and also enjoying my time in Colombia. I certainly don't live an extravagant life style. But I'd like to be able to travel around the country a bit and also send some cash home every month. Advice sorely needed and greatly appreciated.

I would also like the 4-1-1 on Pereira Hi,

I would also like some information on Pereira. Is there a large expat community (FYI, I'm from the U.S.)? What's there to do on weekends? How far is it from the beach? How far is it from the bigger Bogota and Cali and Cargagena? I have an offer to teach Biology at this school: http://www.liceoingles.edu.co/index2006New.swf Does anyone have information on this school that they can share?

I have another offer to teach in Recife, Brazil. Would anyone like to share their opinion about which is a more desirable place to live?

Thanks for any help!

Tom
