titus comments on Learning Spanish in Colombia EspaƱol real I studied a little Spanish before going to Barranquilla, Colombia. Let me just say that the stuff you learn in class (and many books) is not the Spanish spoken in the streets, restaurants, and hotels. By the end of my two-week visit, I was so confused that my language skills were non-existent. When I tried to commuicate in Spanish people just looked at me with a pained look on their faces ("Is he having a seizure? Should we hold his tongue?) The people in Colombia are extremely gracious and firendly, so do them a favor and learn "la lengua real."
