Terry2 comments on Telephone problem..curious... Thanks for all the suggestions... I will try them. She did have internet but as she has to move, everything is disconnected. The damn process she is going through just to get an apartment is BS! After she and daughter are settled into another apartment I will get the internet going again.

Terry2 comments on Telephone problem..curious... Thanks for the answers... Hagh don't know about skype... she doesn't have an internet connection FL.. no VOIP.. this is strictly telco.... I usually get a couple of words then nothing, then I hear a couple of words then nothing again. If I speak asking if she is still there, then I will hear her response, but only for a few words. Needless to say it is causing some unnecessary problems. Terry

Terry2 comments on Rosetta Stone and English teacher? Fernando.. You would need the ftp Client as I have the server. Its basically a File Transfer Protocal that allows a direct connection from the server to the client and in order to transfer large files.

Terry2 comments on Airline price for 13 yr old ..Barranquilla to Bogota? briarblue.... my wife has the money in Colombia... she will make the arrangements... I hope. And... hahaha the Paypal comment was in reference to the 'Sicarios' And... azumoman.. I think she could handle herself quite well. She is one very strong willed individual. I've seen her on the beach in Cartagena...with the vendors.... and with her mother... I feel sorry for the poor bastard that gets tangled up with her when she's older.But.... alone on a bus trip for 18 hours? Naw... I wouldn't feel right and I won't take the chance. Thanks again Terry

Terry2 comments on Airline price for 13 yr old ..Barranquilla to Bogota? Thanks briarblue.... I have advised my wife to contact them and make the arrangements. The grandmother will have to go to the airport and sign papers as the daughter has only the child's ID with her. Thank you! Terry

Terry2 comments on Airline price for 13 yr old ..Barranquilla to Bogota? My stepdaughter originally lived in Barranquilla and she returned to visit with her grandmother. We thought this was the ideal time as the friend was going with her daughter to Barranquilla. How someone can totally disregard the responsibilbiy entrusted is beyond me. Now... the friend is attempting to make a number of excuses, apologies, etc. Its a good thing that the sicarios don't have a website!

Terry2 comments on Friendly People Even in Bogota I visit Bogota frequently and find that most people are no different than what you would find in any North American city. A lot of the problem is in not understanding what they mean by what they say. I am not profiecient in Spanish so I have to wing it. I understand the taxi driver who is trying to make as many fares as possible so he may seem abrubpt but if you put it in perspective... Its understandable. Most of the salespersons in the stores are so accommodating that it is embarassing. I know that many work on sales percentage but they do go out of their way. I have to say that I have had no trouble in day to day activities with banks, shops, restaurants, supermercados.. even though I know VERY little spanish Terry

Terry2 comments on If you are a professional and know English we can help you get to Canada.. Wait a minute babygirl..... There is a very BIG difference between a 'plumber' and a certified 'Pipefitter'. There is a serious amount of training for the latter. What the Canadian gov't is looking for is certified 'tradesman' that have the equivalent training to the Canadian standards. Most of your trained tradesman belong to the construction trades unions and of course they will have some say about new members! Same goes for any construction journeymen. And... toungue in cheek.... having had a lot of experience with the construction trades and their attitudes, I would venture to say that anyone that knew how to distinguish between left and right would be acceptable. Waiting for the fallout. Terry

Terry2 comments on Bancolombia has lost the AMEX code... American Express traveller cheques have become a red herring.... I understand that due to the amount of counterfeiting of these cheques, many businesses have quit and are refusing to accept them. I was recently in Vancouver Washington, US, for some work on my car ( 3 day layover ) and could not cash these cheques at any banks or businesses. On phoning Amex, I was told that they couldn't find a local site that would enable me to cash them. My response was ' so why do I have these useless pieces of paper?.... no response...! After some begging, the local Walmart agreed to cash only 1 if I agreed to spend it in store. Bullshit. This is the last time I will even consider AMEX and will depend solely on ATM. I went the cheque route in order to pay for the motor work I was having done. Instead... Good ole Mastercard..... :)

Terry2 comments on How long have you been with your Colombiana/no 3 years and 1 month...... And I have developed selective deafness when she starts to explain something to me in English. Never thought anyone could go round a subject that many times without falling over. We have a very good relationship and god willing it will last a long time. I met her in Southern Chile while working at a Chemical plant in Mininco... hired her through the landlady who rented us the houses to cook, clean, and do laundry and it just progressed from there. ..........and I visit her once in a awhile...hehehehehe

Terry2 comments on Atraco Surge? Bus Hold Ups in Bogota It used to happen quite frequently in Barranquilla. Buses that would go to Centro from some of the poorest outlying neighborhoods would be held up at gunpoint by sometimes 4 men. I never could understand why they pick on the poor people. They would take cell phones and anything they could get. They then would start phoning relatives to get in touch with the people they robbed to ransom their cedullas and any ID papers. My wife and her mother would hide anything of value in their underwear and have only a cheap wallet with 2 or 3 mil pesos notes. These banditos were not overly ambitious.

Terry2 comments on Swear to God we just had another earthquake... Thanks Aaron21... that's the one. No one was able to shed any light on the building when I asked about it. Just the usual shrug.
|
|
Terry2 comments on Swear to God we just had another earthquake... Speaking of shaky buildings.... what was the real story behind that tall skinny structural steel framework that went up just outside of Laquito? I watched the progress during the course of 3 visits to Cartagena and being in that line or work, it made me wonder just what the hell they were doing. The building did not appear to be plumb and there was an absence of substantial bracing for a structure of that height. Eventually, they dismantled it. Curious.

Terry2 comments on Colsanitas Really appreciate the comments, but therein lies the problem. I will cost me to travel to Bogota, then sit down with a translator?.. ouch.... and of course, I don't know the overall medical services at all. I will still try to get this info as I can probably get TomPower to do a quickie translate.
|
|
Terry2 comments on Colsanitas Thanks guys! I think you're right Bill, but I just can't seem to get any real information from her. She claims that after 1 year you can get your money back. ...hahahaha......money back...in Colombia? hahahahah She underwent surgery last night and so far she's not into talking. I will have her scan the documents and with my little understanding of the Spanish language, I will try to muddle through. I live in Canada and we pay a provincial fee depending on the number of family members... very straightforward....no pre-exist clauses, etc. Hopefully I can get this striaight before she starts sending money all over the place. Thanks again Terry

Terry2 comments on Whats your favorite Colombian beer? Ah... beauty is in the eye of the beer holder...... My fav is a cold Aguila delivered to my chair on the beach at Laquito by Wilson......! Beer is not my favorite beverage but on a hot day at the beach... its better than lemonade! It is refreshing and does not hit you after 4 bottles. Something to be said for a SLOW brew.....:)

Terry2 comments on What's your take on getting involved with a women with children? Geez guys.... this is a child we are talking about. What difference does it make who fathered the child. If you develop a relationship with the mother and child...it should be a no brainer. These are young innocent minds that beg to be molded and wanted... they do give a lot of joy in return. Hell, who knows, you could have fathered a child and he could turn out to be an American ( back atcha Paisa?Calena/Luver). And for Stephen.... I see you were born Canadian. I think the doctor slapped the wrong end.

Terry2 comments on EXPRESS DIVORCE WHEN COUPLE AND CHILDREN LIVE OUTSIDE COLOMBIA I have seen you post many times here but have been reluctant to ask any questions.....until now! I married a Colombiana who has a 13 yr old daughter. The Canadian gov't requires that my wife have a 'Sole Custody' or 'Absolute Custody' order from the Colombian courts before I can submit our documents for the immigration process. All the paperwork has been completed and submitted to the 'lower courts' and we now await the decision from the higher courts. ( I don't know how to properly describe the court system there.). These papers were submitted about 10 months ago... and we still don't know when we can expect them. My question to you: is there any way or process that can determine or advance this application in the court system? In Canada, we can have a lawyer make the appropriate inquiries and at least give us some hope. This is getting very tiring waiting for this paper. We used a VERY reputable notary... ' Dr. Carlos Abed Toro Ortiz' of Notaria Setenta Y Tres Del Circulo De Bogota and he has been very helpful but I don't want to impose. Thanks for any suggestions or assistance you may offer Terry

Terry2 comments on Income tax in Colombia? Thanks guys... Diego... that's the problem... trying to find out if Colombian Nationals have an income tax system similar to ours. Even if we heve no income, it is reported as such. When I ask my wife about income tax, I get the ' deer in the headlights stare'. No comprendo. I thought that perhaps the Colombian govt issued a taxation report similar to ours that make a O income declarable and of course traceable. This is what the Canadian govt is looking for. I think for the time being I will just declare single....... Thanks for the info Terry

Terry2 comments on A long shot but here goes.... WTB Great! Really appreciate this. I have asked on numerous occasions about purchasing these but got nowhere. The owner of the TexMex says he has to buy X number of cases of Aguila to get these but.....yada yada yada..... I know how this goes. I will have my wife contact them. Thanks again Terry PS You will have to advise how to find your new cafe. I would like to visit next time in Bogota

Terry2 comments on What's up with telecommunication in Bogota? Ah geez..... ye of little faith..... hahahahahahah... gotta laugh but I know what you mean. I know how much the apt /services and school costs, so I pay this with no hesitation. I also send extras for the daughter and herself from time to time. She keeps all the receipts in case these are required for the Canadian embassy . So.... when the time comes... I'll send a personal invite to see us off at the airport.
|
|
Terry2 comments on What's up with telecommunication in Bogota? Ok.... mystery solved... wife didn't pay her movistar bill because I didn't send her enough plata. And the TelMex situ is due to the cable router... which they are coming to fix. Ah... all works out in the end.She juggles the money I give her so I can't say anything. I know that little girls can be expensive..... and big ones too!

Terry2 comments on What's up with telecommunication in Bogota? Naw... everythings cool jonas..... we are just waiting for the 'sole custody' papers for the daughter so they can join me in Canada. Gotta have a little faith...

Terry2 comments on What's up with telecommunication in Bogota? 'Boring' is good where the daughter is concerned. We picked that area because of the availablitiy of a decent apartment and proximity to a good private school. The last place she rented was on the 6th floor, no elevator, no heat, no hot water, and the second bedroom was simply some planking across the upper area of the one bedroom. When I was there I spent one night where the rain was dripping through so we went to the Hotel Diamante until we found the present apartment. I had another look at the map and I see that we are actually east of the airport. Thanks for the clarification.
|
|
Terry2 comments on What's up with telecommunication in Bogota? Ok... don't know Bogota that well.... but it is a nicer neighborhood. Daughter is only 12.... no cell phone for her! She already had one but had it ripped off at school. What is considered north? Is this the Chico area? Visited the Harley Davidson shop there....and I think there is a mall there called 'Atlantis' or something like that.
|
|
Terry2 comments on What's up with telecommunication in Bogota? hahahaha.... but how did she get both Movistar and TelMex to give Telus and Rogers voice messages? She is in the north of Bogota near Gran Estacion... If she was with X lover.. her daughter would have gone ballistic. Jonas...... don't forget the fee. Terry

Terry2 comments on More Avainca Flight Problems Please Be Aware and Forewarned!!!!!!! I certainly don't have a problem with their in flight services but trying to get onto the damn flight is ridiculously frustrating. Every flight I have had with Avianca starts with ' you are not in our system'.....I then have to go to lengths to prove I have flight confirmations, flight itineraries, etc. When booking, they refuse to issue a printed ticket so I have to go thru the exercise each and every time. Last visit before Christmas, Avianca ticket counter in LAX....you are not in our system.... I had to go back to AirCanada who printed out 2 pages showing that my ticket was indeed in Avianca control AND in their computer. Eventually, after showing the papers to another counter attendant, I was issued a boarding pass. After Christmas, I asked my wife to contact Avianca and make sure I had reservations on my flight back to Mexico City. Ah..... 'you are not in our system'.... so we had to go to the Avianca office in Salitre Plaza, show all the damn paperwork and my flight itinerary with confirmation numbers, etc.( I also had the receipt showing this was paid on Sept 15th). I told my wife to ask them why I had to do this each and every time.. and all we got was the typical Colombian shrug..... they did give me a printed ticket eventually. I will be adjusting my flight plans accordingly. Never had this kind of problem with COPA.

Terry2 comments on Immigrating to Canada Colombiano: No, the daughter is not mine. Her natural father has never seen her, spoke to her, or supported her in any fashion. But.... in order for the mother to take her out of the country, and also for the Canadian government to process the paperwork, the 'Sole Cutody' order must be in place.
|
|
Terry2 comments on Immigrating to Canada Just my personal experience.... When I attempted to get a 'Visitor's Visa' for my novia from the Canadian Embassy, it was refused. The reason stated that it was in the immigration officers judgement that she would not return at the termination of the visa. When I arrived back in Vancouver I talked to an Immigration lawyer... a Ms Catherine Sas, who is quite well versed in these matters, and she advised that Canada had shut the door on Latin Americans for either tourist, visitors or fiance visas as no one was returning to their country. She also advised that the ONLY ways to Canada were for her to have some expertise that a Canadian company required but could not find in Canada, or be invited by a Canadian University to spend 6 months taking classes in a specific discipline... or as a wife ( legal or common-law). You must sponsor her and the children and be accepted as a viable sponsor, and then they look at your wife for criminal records or health records..... believe me.. I have researched this as my wife and stepdaughter are still in Bogota. My problem is that my wife requires an 'Absolute' or 'Sole' custody order before I can even submit my application to the Canadian gov't. If by chance I'm wroing and you do find a way... please..... let me know! Good luck Terry

Terry2 comments on Marriage Search Scubagirl.. You have to go to a Vital Statistics office and apply for a 'Marriage Search'. This takes about a week or less and costs you about 50 or 60 dollars. You can then send it to a certified translator, or as I did, send it to the Colombian Consulate... in TO. She will translate and certify both that and your 'new' Birth Certificate... neither document can be greater than 30 days old.... meaning they were issued with 30 days of your certifications. Did this many times.... good luck

Terry2 comments on Money transfer-Canada to Colombia Most banks in Bogota, Cartagena and Barranquilla will give you a daily 1 million pesos on either your mastercard or visa and I have also used my debit cards Scotiabank, HSBC, and RBC up to my daily withdrawl limit. I frequently use bank machines inside the bigger malls but also local banks. I agree that not all banks will accept your debit card but most that display the Cirrus logo will. My wife is in possesion of a Canadian debit card that she uses for rent, food, etc. All I have to do is take a truckload of money to the bank and deposit. For larger amount transfers, I have to use Western Union which gets quite expensive. Terry2

Terry2 comments on I cannot comment on this as my experience is limited to occasional visits to Bogota and Cartagena with my wife. (this was added at the insistence of the jefe)

Terry2 comments on Maybe not a 'shut down' but perhaps a 'passing of the torch'..... Its open to anyone who does a lot of relevant travel and who would accept the opportunity to further their positive experiences within Colombia.... hopefully in the same light that robi666 put forth.
