terco panzone comments on So who here on this site actually lives in Colombia?

apparently no html here, or I'm to ignorant to use it correctly! ;o( , anyway, the site is www.bigreddstop.com.

terco panzone comments on So who here on this site actually lives in Colombia?

Hi, I lived in Valledupar for a year and Bucaramanga for about a year and a half with my now wife and family. You can see some family pics here and a video that was made at parque tairona outside of Santa Marta. There is a link to my email there if you want to ask me any questions.

terco panzone comments on Brief travel guide to Santa Marta

Interested in buying a Condo I see the condo for $600, are there any for sale?

terco panzone comments on Do you carry a weapon when you travel? Would you like to?

A note about the guns I am getting a shotgun for our house. Actually my fiancee is getting it, in her name. This is all legal and above board. Her cousin is a cop and is helping us do it. As we live outside the city and you can't just yell for the cops, I feel more comfortable with this. Tourists or non colombians cannot legaly have guns, according to the cop. He said if someone tries to break in (wich has already happened while my fiancee was alone at the house) we can legaly shoot them in our yard or house. I'm thinking that just firing the thing should scare off any local thieves. A short barreled mosberg makes a nice racket! This is not cheap though, gonna cost me about a grand for the the gun and the papers.

terco panzone comments on Important message for non-Spanish speakers visiting Colombia...............

Can any of you guys tell me ... why spanish speakers cannot seem to deal well with accents, for the most part. With english, everyone that uses it has an accent of one kind or another, different parts of the US, or other countries, or people for whom it is a second language. Unless they just don't know how to speak at all, we usually understand what they are saying. Sometimes it is even an advantage to speak differently as it kinda makes you stand out with the ladies. But my experience in colombia is that if you don't pronounce it almost exactly the way every one else does, they just give you the "what the hell did you say?" look. Even when I had a mexican girlfriend and took her to Puerto Rico, there was a problem with the different accents for her. I can say something to someone here in colombia that sounds right to me, but they don't get it. I ask my carino if I said it wrong and she says no, she doesn't know why they didn't get it. A couple of time she has even interupted when this was going on and told the person basicly what I said over again and asked them "why don't you understand, he said it correctly." To which they only shake their head.

terco panzone comments on sometimes its better to shut up and pay

Business as usual Of course it wouldn't happen in the US. But in the US a taxi is less likely to get stiffed also. It happens, but I imagine in Colombia if the driver just lets people walk away without paying pretty soon he'll be starving. And he's basicly only got himself to rely on. And another thing is correct also, it's not a good idea to make enemies here without good cause. Life is cheap here and they don't have to get you right then. They can pay someone $50 to take you out if they want, maybe less. Most of you have been in country longer than me, so tell me if I'm wrong. This is just my experiennce with most third world countries. I know Colombians kill other Colombians for little or nothing pretty often, from what I hear. Not to say you didn't get a raw deal, but I think it was more the principle of the thing that pissed you off more than the money. It would have pissed me off to, but I'd let it go.

terco panzone comments on Avianca flights

not a good idea I would really consider going with another airline if the price is within a couple hundred dollars difference. I have had numerous problems with this airline in the last two years. I fly back and forth every couple of months and now avoid them if possible.

terco panzone comments on United States of the AMERICAS

GringoDeLouisian I'm from south texas. I don't know if you'r talking about illegals or legal immigrants, but the illegals I have known are only here to make money. they send it home, and usually have plans to return as soon as they can.

flyer do you and your father have a joint account?

terco panzone comments on American passports

Here ya go Here are the facility names and phone numbers in Houston. No, it is not the immigration office. Yes , you can do it in two weeks by mail, (see link: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/processing/processing_1740.html)

You will have to call one of the offices to see if you can do the one day thing, and find out what the requirements are. Sounds like you are in Chicago, so I don't know how much good this does you. I would assume if you can do it in Houston, you should be able to do it there. But you know what they say about "assume" ...

terco panzone comments on American passports

Yes Immigration in Houston. I guess that's the office. I only did it once, my passport is only a few years old. I had to get it to go on a voyage to Pakistan. I'm a merchant marine. As I remember it, you can go in with an airline ticket that has you leaving soon, so that you can't wait the usual 6 months. I will check it out and let you know the specifics.

terco panzone comments on

and GIB Unless I had a history of mental illness that included some type of paranoia, I would listen to my instincts.

terco panzone comments on American passports

Just just get a new passport. I know in Houston you can get one in one day if you have your ticket in hand to show them. You have to pay more ($90.00) but you arrive and leave with your passport in the same day. I've done this.

terco panzone comments on

all this talk about "Americans" is supposed to be about the US I suppose. And I am US citizen and I really don't see what the big deal is. The US is almost completey made up of immigrants, unless you belong to a "Native American" tribe. I suppose I should specify "Native North American" ;o) (Which I can lay claim to in part) So ANYONE could look like an "American". The only difference would be when they open their mouth.

terco panzone comments on

? Which America?

terco panzone comments on Colombia's Drug Untouchables

Well "accept the money or watch your family tree-- up and down-- be eliminated one by one"

doesn't sound like, if he was collaborating, he had much of a choice so I don't see how that negates my previous point. And I repeat, he seems to be making a difference NOW.

terco panzone comments on American passports

HUh Have you ever tried to get thru on the phone to the consulate?

terco panzone comments on Colombia's Drug Untouchables

hmmmm Seems to me no one could have been involved in the govt. at that time and not have been tarnished by the corrpuption. Didn't Pablo have a policy of take the bribe or die? So Uribe survived to get into a position where he could change things? Which he seems to be doing. No one is perfect, especially politcians. But Uribe absolutely seems to be making a difference NOW.

terco panzone comments on Departure taxes

New flight from houston to Cali, just read about it. Continental.

terco panzone comments on Colombians Travel Options

thanks I wanted to do some traveling with my mujer, but she didn't know where she did and did not need a visa.

terco panzone comments on Roadtrip

I'll check because I thought the same thing, there use to be one but no more. But this trip supposedly took place recently.

terco panzone comments on Departure taxes

I think the taxes are Gobierno, they do not go to the airport.

terco panzone comments on Colombia- USA Bank Account

He's in Colombia, you want the money in the states. He can put it in a Colombia bank account and send you the ATM card. Take it out of an ATM in the States. Sounds like its less than $10,000. You'd probably have to take it our $500.00 at a time due to limits on the machines, but you could do it. If you had started the process when you started this thread, you'd have it already.

terco panzone comments on Departure taxes

stamp I didn't know the passport stamp would do, I lost my customs paper last time and left out of Bucaramanga. Had to pay the full $51.00. I'll know better next time I guess.

terco panzone comments on Thank you so much for helping out!

Paypal do you use paypal from colombia, or another country?

terco panzone comments on One way possible or roundtrip only?

All airlines in the US technically require a roundtrip ticket, to help insure you don't stay in the country illegaly. Some enforce this more than others. I've never had Delta say anything, but Continental and American have both stopped me before. Fortunately, I'm a merchant marine and exempt! ;o)

terco panzone comments on Departure taxes

tax save the copy of the customs form they give you when you arrive, you will only have to pay half the tax when you depart that way. It was $28.00 US last time I returned.

terco panzone comments on Colombia- USA Bank Account

Depends on how much money you are talking about. I have a Bank of America account. Two actually. I use my debit card in Colombia with no problem, and my mujer has one also. Only problem is I cannot deposit money while actually IN colombia. However, my mujer can withdraw with her card and then deposit THAT into her Davivienda account. ATM's in colombia automaticly make the conversion to pesos, so she doesn't have to worry about that. This is good up the the daily limit, I think mine is $1500.00. A couple of times I've had to get more, and just called my bank and it was no problem. If you need to get say $5000.00 , just go back to the ATM every day until you get it. Of course you have to pay the ATM fees, so you need to find a caja that will give you the most money at one time. Usually 4 0r 500 mil. at a time. I know your getting ripped on fees, but it's the easiest way to do it.

terco panzone comments on Snakes of Colombia

At last, something I know a little about! Condorlisa Arroz is absolutely right about the corals, their fangs are to short to do much unless they find a piece skin to chew on, like the webbing between your fingers. I'm familiar with the North American snakes, but the Colombian ones not so much. Atrevido , the web site you gave I have been to before, but it just gives the scientific names of the snakes and no information that I can find. Is there no other site to go to for snakes in colombia? Never saw a water moccassin chase anyone, but the won't get out of you way either.

Thanks I was looking at some of your other posts and kinda figured it out. Is it possible for your vet to maybe hook me up with a vet in Bucaramanga with a line on , if so you can PM me the phone number and my gf can call himm/her to get the info. thanx.

terco panzone comments on Spanish fluency

spanish classes I wrote this in another thread, it goes better here I think:

"I Went to panama not knowing any spanish at all. I traveled to Nicaragua, Guatemala, Peru, and finally colombia for work, and still didn't pick up a whole lot of spanish. It was not until I met my mujer here that I really began to learn, about 2 years ago. But I know it will be a long time before I can carry on a converssation with a native colombian without saying "Como?" or "Que?" every two seconds. Her family and our friends make allowances for me and tell me I'm learning well, but it's very frustrating. Even though I know the words they are using, when they talk normally it is very hard to make out."

I thinkg being drunk removes you fear of looking or sounding like an idiot, therefore you relax and let it flow.
I'm only in country about two weeks to a month at a time, then that long back in the states. Can I find spanish classes that I can leave then take up again when I return?

terco panzone comments on colombian slang

Hmmm I have two tattoos and haven't regretted them. My mujer has one of a rose and her sons name. It's on her shoulder and she sometimes get's selfconcious about it, but I think it's because other colombians look down on it, not really because SHE doesn't like it. I tell her not to worry about them. I agree that a symbol instead of a word or saying would be better. Does Colombia have a national flower, or animal. What about something tribal?

terco panzone comments on What do i Say?

terco panzone comments on Alliance of Cuba, Venezuela, and the FARC? against Colombia?

No answer I posted this on another thread, but as yet have no answer.

What is the FARC's agenda, I mean other than taking over the govt.

what is their political philosophy, and what type of govt. do they plan to implement? Do they have a manifesto? Sorry, but I'm not that up on Colombian History. I love the country and would hate to see some group fuck it up in the name of communism, if that is what their aim is. And if it isn't, then what the hell do they want?

terco panzone comments on Looking for a puppy

and I live outside the city with plenty of yard space, so I'm looking for an outside dog, not an indoor decoration...

terco panzone comments on Looking for a puppy

Like I said I'd give adoption a shot if I liked the dog, it's looks and personality. I like huskies and malemutes, but don't want one there for the very reason that they are cold weather dogs and it's not that cold in bucaramanga. I like the Border collies and heelers because of their intelligence and resiliency. I've had dogs in the states most of my life. At one time I had an alskan timber wolf/malemute mix. Best dog I ever had.

terco panzone comments on Looking for a puppy

Nice Elmo But you sound pretty self sufficient, why would you need an owner? :)

terco panzone comments on Looking for a puppy

breed is not so important, I would take an adoption if I liked the dog. The mix i mentioned is just my preference and not set in stone. By the way, I'm still building my spanish vocabulary, how do I tell the vet I'm looking for a Blue Heeler(australian shepherd) or Border Collie. Most of the colombians know what a Lab is.

terco panzone comments on Alliance of Cuba, Venezuela, and the FARC? against Colombia?

sorry reading the thread sounded like an alliance against the US. I wonder though, if Chavez did invade Co. with the help of the FARC, how hard would it be at this time to drum up the support of the american people, who are already getting fed up with the crap in Iraq, to come to the rescue? Do you really think Colombia could hold out against Chavez and his money?

terco panzone comments on U.S. hostages forgotten in Colombian jungle

still learning what exactly is the FARCs end goal, I mean what type and shape of govt. are they advocating?

terco panzone comments on Alliance of Cuba, Venezuela, and the FARC? against Colombia?

But what about this couldn't Chavez have an eye on invading colombia?

terco panzone comments on my wife is increasingly aggressive and is hard to live with

Absolutely right I'm from Texas, and you hit it on the button there! I had a gringa GF there and I was breaking up with her at on point and she feaked out on me. she was hitting me, wich I put up with, and then locked herself in the bathroom and wouldn't come out. Fearing she might hurt herself, and it wouldn't look to good on me, I called the cops. When I told her that, she ran out and took off in her truck. The cops came, then went off looking for her. Later that night she came back, much calmer, and we were talking it out. At this point another cop comes by and wants to talk to her alone. I go in the bedroom and wait. The cop talks to her a while and then leaves. She comes in and tells me the guy told her "all you have to do is say he hit you and I'll take him to jail tonight" I never touched her! I only called the cops in the first place because I was worried about her! To her credit, she didn't take the bait. Your right about Texas, if you hit her, or even piss her off, be prepared.
