suipacha comments on US OR COLOMBIAN LAWYER???

I would recommend you get an American attorney. Remember the Immigration law belong to the US and INA (immigration statute) only allows US attorneys to appear in court if $$ is being paid. Don't be fooled, if things get complicated and you have to go to a hearing, your Colombian attorney will not be able to appear if he is not a member of at least one state bar and you will have to get an American attorney anyway. Colombia is a civil law country, without US legal training and atty from there would not know the first thing to do.

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

So What?? Any Cuban will admit that Fulgencio Batista was a ruthless dictator. Does that automatically make Fidel Castro a great and benevolent leader? Ever heard of the Russian Czars? They were horrible leaders who were eventually overthrown by the Bolsheviks. But guess who replaced them? Stalin. I don't care about what happened 40 years ago, I'm talking about the situation right now. Explain to me why Castro has a deal w/ the United States to prohibit emigration from his country? Explain why 125,000 Cubans took off within the span of a few months in 1980 (a time when Cuba had full Soviet support and subsidies).

"It is hard to beleive 800,000(miami alone) or more Exiles couldn't have tossed Fidel out if that was their desire."

Again this is just plain ignorance. Do you know anything about history? About the Bay of Pigs, about the CIA sponsored attempts to assassinate castro w/ the help of Cuban exiles, about the fact that Che Guevara was captured by a Cuban working for the CIA? And if that black Cuban you talked to has no problems w/ Fidel and thinks he's great, why isn't HE living in Cuba or if not why isn't he busy overthrowing Castro. Sounds like he's in Miami living it up w/ all the other White Cubans. And as far as that de facto segregation I invite anyone to go to Perrine, Kendall, Homestead, Miami Lakes, Miramar, etc. and see for your selves what the racial makeup of those neighborhoods looks like.

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

miamimike, you might want to change your name to something esle because you obviously don't know much about the city you named yourself after. I am Cuban and I don't discriminate and neither does my family. I'm pretty white but I have and grandmother and cousins that are mulatto and so do most Cuban families. Why don't Cubans overthrow Castro? Maybe because they live in a police state where your neighbor can inform on you any moment? What do you think the mariele boatlift and the mass exoduses in the mid 90s were for? Castro was feeling the heat so he told everyone that didn't like his communist paradise to love their country or leave it. In just a few days 100s of thousands took his offer.

I'm not saying I totally agree w/ the fanatical Cuban right (I'm against the blockade) but just because Castro hasn't been overthrown doesn't mean the people love him or wouldn't leave if they could. Right now Mugabe is bulldozing the homes of his own people and leaving them homeless en masse but he has yet to be overthrown. I guess by your rationale then the people must really love and approve of him since he's been president since '80.

So by your rationale not holding elections for 40 some odd years is A OK?

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

Name one Latin American country that doesn't discriminate on the basis of skin color. Its not fair to pin this solely on Cubans. Yes there is some discrimination but its not a uniquely Cuban phenomenom. And all that talk about how only white Cubans have problems w/ Castro is bull. If everyone still living in Cuba thinks Castro is so great why hasn't he held an election?

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

Actually I think you're wrong even there. Since large parts of Mexico were ceded to the US in 1848 there have been huge amounts of naturalized or native born Mexicans in the US and many more than Cubans. I am not giving any reasons why this is the case; just giving a description of the current status quo which even you have admitted to. Its like trying to explain why Jews in the US have such high levels of wealth and education compared to other groups. There are many possible explanations.

One thing I think that Jews and Cubans have in common is that they are very cohesive i.e. they help each other out wherever they go. Me and some of my friends have a saying that being Cuban means you belong to the best club in the world because anywhere on the planet that a Cuban meets a compatriot he will give him the shirt off his back. I have relatives that have shown up in Miami fresh off the boat w/ nothing but the shirt on their back. Everybody pitches in, even remote relatives and acquaintances and within a few weeks these people have places to stay, clothing, shoes and a job.

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

Dude you sidestepped the issue. The fact is many Puerto Ricans are indistinguishable from other Latin American immigrants i.e. don't speak english have a different culture. I don't think anyone would argue that PR isn't a part of Latin America.

"face it-when you are handed all these advantages you are a few hands up on the competition"

Wouldn't it follow from YOUR premise that because PRs have been handed even bigger advantages they should be even further up on the competition? BTW you might want to tell the US Census board that PRs are not considered hispanic minorites...

http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/p20-545.pdf

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

Wait why not? Are you saying Puerto Ricans are not hispanics living in the US? Are you saying they are not Latin American minorities in this country? My point is that granted, Cubans have had special advantages but Puerto Ricans occupy an even more advantageous position and they are not even half as successful once they reach the STATES of the United States of America. Puerto Ricans are generally not even successful as successful as Colombians in the US.

Oh yeah and don't even mention Bacardi b/c they were a Cuban operation before they moved their distillery to PR.

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

I know that but last time I was in Puerto Rican everyone spoke to me in Spanish.

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

"The Cubans also were (and still are) extended many benefits that others like Colombians, Mexicans, Haitians never received. And will never receive.Things such as SSI benefits(without ever paying into our SS system), temporary health insurance, housing assisitance, college tuition benefits and Residency in One Year, One Day for many Cubans(fast track residency). One wonders that if others received the same Helping Hand if they to wouldn't have been just as sucessful?"

Then explain Puerto Ricans. There are more of them and they all have full US citizenship. There are more than twice as many of them living in the US too. Cubans on the other hand only make up 3.7 of the ENTIRE hispanic population of the US yet possess a disproportionate amount of wealth and power in the US; Cubans are even denied affirmative action at most universities b/c they are generally well off while on the other hand PRs receive more affirmative action than any other group except blacks. WTF?

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

It's because the plumbing in these countries cannot handle large amounts of toilet paper and becomes clogged. I guess when people come to the states they have the habit of using wastepaper baskets which is nasty in my opinion since you have shit stained paper just sitting in the toilet next to you... but such is life.

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

FYI its not just the rich Cubans who emigrated from Cuba. Yes, they were the first ones but see Mariele Boatlift and Operation Pedro Pan (where Cubans stayed behind and sent their children to the US) These were poor average Cubans that came over to make a life for themselves. And don't forget we are the most financially and politically successful Latin American minority in the US too!

suipacha comments on Colombia vs Cuba

Pretty interesting debate. I'm 1/2 Cuban and 1/2 Colombian, born and raised in Miami. I've been to Colombia but not Cuba. One thing I can say is that in Miami the Cuban and Colombian women are hot on just about an equal level. The one thing I can say about Cuban girls is that they don't age as well as Colombianas, but a 16-30 they are just as good if not better looking as any Colombiana. And don't even get me started on Cuban food and culture. Anywhere in the world you go you'll find a Cuban restaurant or salsa joint. It doesn't really make much difference to me since my dad is from the coast where they share alot of the Carribean culture.

suipacha comments on Best private health insurance for tourists?

Your best bet is to purchase travelers insurance in the states before traveling abroad. I bought %00K worth of coverage for less than $200 to cover my 4 month stay in South America. Basically you can go anywhere in the country and your insurance will cover it.

suipacha comments on Colombian Festival in Miami

"thuggish contention come primarily from the Caribbean and Central american countries"

Sorry bro my Mom's Cuban and if you know anything about Miami you know that the Latinos who have their shit most together in the states come from Cuba no competition hands down. Colombians are also very successful though. I know a thing or too about thuggery (I grew up in P-rrine) in Miami enough to tell you that this unfortunate trait is shared by all young Latinos in Miami. There's no thugged out Colombians in Miami? Please. I even know some thugged out Argentinians

suipacha comments on Colombian Festival in Miami

Yep, last time I went to Col Fest in Miami it was pretty thugged out and not that fun. Calle Ocho pisses me off b/c I can't park in front of my house and every thug and illegal immigrant within a 50 mile radius thinks its ok to piss on the street and leave garbage everywhere.

suipacha comments on Colombian Festival in Miami

007 If I were back home in Miami I probably would. One can only hope things have changed since the last time I was there. Personally I just don't go for that whole Calle Ocho ghetto illegal immigrant vibe. But like I said hopefully its improved.

sounds like someone who doesn't appreciate how hard middle class people work, scrimp and save to do something like this.. Why don't you go knock on the door and tell them how wrong it is to enjoy the fruits of their labor and how they should hand it away as if it cost them nothing.

suipacha comments on Colombian Festival in Miami

Have any of you actually been to the Colombian festival in Miami?? I was just wondering because when I used to go it was just a bunch of hoochie mamas and gang bangers and a few arepa stands in Tamiami Park (or was it Tropical?) Anyway this was about 4 or 5 yrs ago so maybe its gotten better.

ps All the (fill in the blank) latin festivals in Miami were the same way from my exp.

suipacha comments on Where Is The Best Place In Colombia To Live.

Lima is a decent city but the people there are UGLY! There are some cute ones but they are really hard to find and don't hold a candle to the girls in Colo and Vzla. You might want to try Montevideo, Uruguay. I went last year and fell in love. Its a city of about a million people on the the rio de la plata, beatiful beach where people play volleyball and soccer everyday, great bar scene in the plaza, decent clubs, laid back atmosphere, nice beautiful women, dirt cheap and 2 hrs away from buenos aires by ferry. Its very safe and has a good share of decent restaurants.

suipacha comments on Are drugs legal in Columbia

Sorry, I just don't like it when people wear their nationality on their shoulder like they earned something (especially when they are no longer living in that country). Its not like its something you earned and it does not automatically make you more knowledgeable or credible when discussing the topic.

I usually lurk but something about this post irked me. Thank you I'll now return to the underground.

suipacha comments on Are drugs legal in Columbia

It's because of the demand of drugs by junkies like you that the drug trade has brought a lot of death and misery to Colombia. I hope you think about that every time you take a "toke"!

Yes, ColX I'm calling you out b/c of this idiotic remark. Drugs are just like any other commodity traded on the world's markets, from pork bellies to oil futures. Do you think the consumption of drugs is what's bringing death and misery to our beloved Colombia? No, its the accompanying criminality and violence of the illicit trade in cocaine that causes this suffering and prohibitionist sentiments will do nothing to solve the problem. You can stand their and do your best Nancy Reagan impersonation but its not going to change how many people want a hit. Should drugs be legalized? Maybe? I know one thing though, drug prohibition has failed miserably and allowed the criminal underworld to thrive as it did in the US circa 1920.

I also agree w/ Gringo in Bogota South Americans in general have this habit of blaming on their problems on el Norte? I have to ask when corrupt Colombian politicians steal funds meant for development of infrastructure or accept bribes how the F is that the US' fault (BTW this goes for the whole of SA). Explain to me how its all the fault of the yanquis that SA culture condones theft and fraud as a way of life? As someone who is writing to you from SA I can attest to this firsthand.

is inadmissible.

suipacha comments on Want to marry a Colombiana...here's a novel idea

I'm sorry that's incorrect information. Even if you are here illegally you can apply for residency after marrying a US citizen and don't have to leave the country first. Actually if you left the country you would probably face at least a 3 year ban.

I'm 1/2 Colombian 1/2 Cuban born and raised in the states. I guess there is something in the blood, although I disagree that we're all ugly but what do I know I'm a half breed.
