static comments on Need some information to Colombia Black Sheep Hostel in Medellin offers inexpensive Spanish lessons and is a nice place to stay. Last time that I was there, there was a solo, female, Swiss traveler staying there as well.

static comments on Career Opportunities The advice that I give to young'uns is to study whatever, but to make sure that they are a wiz in Excel. If you know Excel, you are always employable. The other advice that I give is to look to see what needs the fewest amount of units needed to graduate, pick that, be in a study group (very important!) and to not change majors.

static comments on COLOMBIA: The Food Basket is Running Out Rubito said: "You might also want to ask yourself, if agricultural subsidies are so good, why is it that the two countries with the most amount of them (Japan followed by the US) are two of the countries where food is the MOST expensive on Earth??" I am very against agricultural subsidies, but have to correct you: in fact, food is very cheap in the US. It is nowhere near "the most expensive on Earth".

static comments on Bogota Hostel The problem with Platypus is that it is very, very run down. However, the owner is great. I have also stayed at Hostel Sue which I like a bit better. With hostels, it all depends upon who is staying in your dorm. If it is filled with a bunch on 20-something, coked-up, drunk guys, then forget sleeping. Bring earplugs no matter what you do.

static comments on SOS!! UK travel to Colmbia via USA "If I were a foreigner, I'd avoid American airports at all costs: rude, ignorant, xenophobic and racist personnel can make layovers in the U.S. a dismal experience." Good advice. I agree, and I am an American.

static comments on Dinner out Time for our Moderator to re-read the rules: "We also don't allow attacks on groups of people (women, men, americans, colombians, ...). You can talk about groups of people, that's fine, just don't attack them."
|
|
static comments on Dinner out "I didn't make any value judgment on different lifestyles, just that YOU shouldn't take it for granted that everybody should share YOUR values and priorities in lifestyle issues." What? Where did I state that I thought that others should share my values or priorities?

static comments on Dinner out I expect at least some empathy from a moderator. It's no secret the way the world works. Those of us who have worked in the service industry don't like to be insulted. Have you ever heard the saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"? The custom in the United States and Canada is to tip service employees. You don't have to like it, you don't have to agree with it and nobody will force you to do it. Don't want to tip? Fine, then don't. One is free to spend their money however they like. It would be much better if employees in North America would be paid a fair wage and tipping was not necessary, but they are not, they won't be and none of us set up the system or can change it. It is what it is. Your actions will not change anything, so don't worry. Besides, the Internal Revenue Service doesn't care what we think: they tax the waiters and bartenders on expected income from tips whether or not you patronize the place. There are several ways of thinking about this issue and maybe your way is NOT the best.

static comments on Dinner out I agree with you on the error of insulting ones parents. You mentioned it twice; yeah, we got the point. It appears that you have misplaced priorities. The comments from chorizo in regards to the service industry were cruel, insensitive and uncalled for. After those narrowminded, xenophobic comments you get your undies in a bunch because someone insulted his parents? So, are these posts are the ones that you approve of? "You people in these service jobs who think you deserve a tip and think yourselves useful. You're not. We can do everything you are doing for us. We don't even need you." "This is a bollocks American practice because most Americans were brain washed to think tips is a way of life since they had that bell boy job, or waiter job, or some other services job, or god forbid rode a taxi. American Taxi drivers are the worst spoiled people." "It's not our problem some countries have these shitty service jobs with less than minimum wages." Cheap shot indeed.

static comments on Mountain House Hostel in Manizales I was going to say the same thing, but bufalo beat me to it. This medium is called a FORUM. We exchange ideas here. Many of them are true. Some are not. Some are plain conjecture. However, in this age of the Internet, savvy guesthouse owners have learned to pay attention to what impressions people are having in their establishments. This is only one of many travel forums. These days, it is not necessary to rely solely upon Lonely Planet or Footprint guides; word gets around much more quickly than ever before. The honest opinions from members are why many of us come here. Also, I wouldn't put any stock into the comments of a pissant newbie who joins just to make a rebuttal.
