spigrimace comments on Medellin pico y placa -- new extended hours I agree as well. I do domicilios in my car and now either I have to buy a moto and ride it on my pico y plca day or hire someone with a moto for the day I have pico y placa. Either way it is a loss of income or increase in cost.

spigrimace comments on Paracos For Jesus in Belén Rincón MT where in Rincon is this? Do you have the address. I only ask because most of the rincon I know is flat (Like Cr 79 between Cl 3 and cl 3 sur) with maybe one or 2 streets that go up a hill around Cl 2. Those pics remind me of Belen Zafra. If you want a trip, go up the steep hill there on a saturday night (cr 83 about cl 21). I drove home my cook and the empanada guy on my corner that live up there last saturday night about 12:30am because I was bored. I usually leave them on the Cr 83 at the base of the hill but he insisted I go up the hill which I hate only because its almost impossible to turn around. What a zoo it is up there.

spigrimace comments on Antioquia Ski Team? Is there really such a thing? There is a water ski team out at Club Campestre out by the Rionegro airport. There is a gringo (nice guy that always stops by my place when he is in town) that comes down regularly that was a pro skier in his younger days and now donates equipment and donates his time to teach kids how to waterski and has brought pro skiers from the states to do shows and donate teaching time out there. He was just in town a week or 2 ago but I dont know if he went back to the states yet. I only have his home address in the states. PM me if youd like to contact him.

I always take the under at 8 minutes and I almost always win.

spigrimace comments on Starting a Bar in medellin Be clear on what you want and are looking for becuase there are bar licenses and there are discotecque licenses. Hole in the wall bar with 10-12 small tables on la 33, needing full update/upgrade should run you around 18-20 millones. Nicer lounge bar like Citrus on la 33, nicely updated with a lot more tables, more like 35 millones. (note that they will ASK 40 and 80 millones respectively so just assume they are asking double what its worth). go to EL Colombiano.com classified ads have many listed especially on sundays. Theres a shitload of paperwork that my fingers wont be able to write the book in a matter of minutes.

spigrimace comments on Watch the NBA finals at The Tiger Paw in Parque Lleras, Medellin Brian, you will find out running a sports bar can be a thankless job. Like my place, every year youll spend $100USD or more each for ESPN Game Plan, ESPN Full Court, MLB.tv &/or MLB Extra Innings, HBO Plus for Boxing, NBA league pass, NFL Sunday Ticket, NHL Center Ice, Mediazone Rugby, etc. etc. etc. plus $300USD a bulb around 2 times a year for the projector, all the monthly internet, Direc TV, energy costs and all other related costs like employees, cleaning, bathroom costs, glass breakage, etc. You have all the startup costs to try to eventually cover as well. A domestic beer costs wholesale 900 for Pilsen up to about 1100 for Club Colombia - warm. So add the electricity cost of getting it cold and the albeit small cost of the bottles and case which is a deposit system. Its between Brian and DIAN if he has to charge IVA on the sale of the beer which at 16% is a huge cost. As a restaurant, I have to. Even if he doesnt have to charge the sales tax, he still makes at best, a mil a beer. Thats a lot of beer one needs to sell to cover all those monthly costs. In my eyes Brian, these folks dont see the whole picture and dont realize the huge bargain they are getting when they use our services. Maybe you can give the backpacker that sleeps at the hostel who just wants to shoot pool a break on the price, but for the off the street fan, who comes in to watch a game thats not on any cable down here, add up all the costs above translate it to pesos and divide by mil pesos profit a beer to get how many beers a Medellin sports bar owner has to sell just to break even and you should now feel like youre getting a really good deal.

spigrimace comments on 2 Internet Cafes Cleaned Out By Employee Be here all the time? Here I am at 7am saturday taping the 2 super 14 semifinals and heineken cup rugby final match on ESPN Mas because there is a big rugby tournament in Belen Deportiva all day today and 100-200 players and fans will come by tonight for cheap beer and watch the matches. I was up yesterday at 6am and went to bed about 1am after cleaning up after the spurs/lakers game. Had about a dozen for that. Raaay stopped by too and had a nice lunch and chat and caught me while fixing up some tables. I had to translate the perverses he yelled in English at the nice pretty young ladies walking by. The guy has mojo because they smiled instead of being offended. So yes I am always here. I have a good friend who opened a business in the food court in Premium Plaza. He is a guy that everything he touches turns to gold when he does business yet he is a rebel type and on the cover wouldnt look like a sucessful but hes loaded. He let his Colombian partner do everything to set up the business. He said it cost 65 millones to open it which isnt all that bad so considering they didnt pay any prima on the local and it would be considered a franchise albeit a chain with only 3 points of sale so perhaps he owed the owner of the name (who is his partner) a little something, at best 10 millones would be generous. Ive seen the place and it is very nicely done and the equipment is top notch, probably the stoves, stainless steel work tables and refrigerators cost around 25 millones. Then plates, lamination and acrylic work, admin costs and all and it probably was more like 40 millones so Id say he probably only lost 20 millones. Now that mall is just starting but like the Del Oeste gold mine in San Diego does around 50-60 millones a month in sales and probably makes around 12-18 millones profit (double to triple those numbers in December) remembering just their rent in that place is 10 millones a month! Anyway, Im tired and babbling but I talked to him yesterday and I told him to have his friends go at different times and buy something and bring him the receipt. His partner can easily have the register rigged in the POS program to give a reciept but put the sale in a bucket that my friend wont know about and will never see. So with the receipt he can check the receipt number in the system and if it doesnt show up or if the receipt number in the bucket he can look at comes up with a completely different order, then he knows the guy is screwing him. I also saw where he can get screwed. Surprisingly he says he is only selling 9 millones a month. May be true because the mall is young but considering he pays about 5 millones rent, he is taking heavy losses to start and I wonder if the number is really say 12millones and the partner is pocketing say 3 a month. Anyway, when I bought something there I noticed it was regimin simplificado and no way would DIAN believe it if they came to audit because its somehting like 50-60 millones a YEAR in sale to be regimin simplificado. I shutter to think if the company that owns that franchise is in my friends name, the partner could screw him and bolt the day DIAN comes around and says they owe like 50 millones in back-iva, fines and interest. I have tons of stories. Employees, partners, vendors, etc. If really interested, pop over, buy me a beer and we can rap while watching the pretty gorls parade by

spigrimace comments on Secretaria de Salud de Medellin never ceases to amaze me Case in point, the negros on the corner that cook empanadas (and have a license to do it) on the weekends on top of dirt with no water and use two blackened adobe blocks and for heat, burning waste wood covered in whatever paint, varnish or other chemicals. Never change the cooking oil, leave the soda pops in the nasty igloo cooler overnight in a pool of water as the ice melted. All on top of a wood table that they leave on the side of a vigilante shack during the week taking on all the weather elements. When cooking or hand making the empanadas, they dont wear hats, dont use disposable plastic gloves. Yummy.

spigrimace comments on Secretaria de Salud de Medellin never ceases to amaze me I dont think you guys understand how redicullously strict these people are. An employee brings their lunch and puts it in the refrigerator. We got cited for the lunch being in a black plastic bag which is a no-no because one cannot see whats inside. When you eat out, many times you get utensils with wood handles..Any utensil with wood is a violation too. Everything needs to be covered. You cannot have a ream of plastic cups in its plastic sleeve sitting out, it needs to be in a container such as rubbermaid with a cover or the inspector will confiscate it. The list goes on and on

spigrimace comments on Secretaria de Salud de Medellin never ceases to amaze me Actually to clarify, the lab requested they bring in a bag of their morning dump. I feel like a troll but I am 100% dead serious. My cook and I have been laughing in stitches all morning long. We wondered if theyll issue a carne (ID) with a foto of the employee giving a thumbs up along side their bag of ca-ca. I told the inspector that this exam is degrading to the employees.

spigrimace comments on TRIP REPORT...(yes,another).............Los Lomas Finca Hotel I cabled once in Colombia. Unfortunately but funny now, they assume youre 5 foot 7 and weigh 170 pounds. But when youre 6 foot 1, 240, the bend of the cable goes a bit lower and they didnt clear the brush beneath so good and when I saw the dead tree limb I wasnt goping to clear coming at me while whooshing along, I pulled up on the cable with all my might, burned a hole in the leather glove and swung my legs above me theu expsoing my rear end and I took a whack in the arse harder than Babe Ruth could have swatted it. I was sore down below for a week.

spigrimace comments on Laureles - 33 Nightlife Area / Property And all the poblado guys bitched because I put the sports bar on the "wrong" side of the river and they have to drive 10 minutes to get here to watch the NFL. Of course the 20 guys that live in Estadio, Lomas de Los Bernal, La Mota, Laureles, Castellana, etc. didnt bitch. For appreciation (or at least no depreciation) maybe its almost too late but Lomas de Los Bernal not far from Laureles has some gorgeous Pobladoesque apartments in the low to mid 100 millones range. But If functionality is your game, and you want cheap spectacular full city views and dont mind Steeeeeep hills, Rodeo Alto has new construction unidad cerradas in the 60-70 millones. EZ to la 80 over by Guayabal (youre at the aguacatala bridge in 5 minutes from home) and quick to la Mota and unfortunatley Belen Rincon but although theres bus youll need a car as no stores near there and be prepared to replace the clutch every 2 years (but that should only cost you around $260 mil!).

spigrimace comments on Laureles - 33 Nightlife Area / Property I dont know how much of a revamp it had, but in addition to typical fondas and run down taverns, there are now more newer on the cusp of high-end cafes and lounges. They are redoing curbs and sidewalks througout the main drags all over the city. I like it quite a bit but strictly investment wise Im not sure as many parts of laureles can be just as high as Poblado. I like the neighborhood feel of it and I personally like flat vs. hills of Poblado. Are you talking a business? Commercial property? Residential property?

spigrimace comments on best restaurant in medellin Blue Marlin (Laureles & Poblado), Nuqui (3 locations), San Marino (la 33)I always love gringos that come to my place and ask if the seafood is fresh. 12 hours from the sea and they want the mornings catch and get irked that its frozen. Buy a map.

|
spigrimace comments on How difficult is it to open a small restaurant/bar in medellin? morphus, you ARE colombian! I get offers like that from locals here all the time. Of course being colombian, when the place is new and isnt profitable, youll ask your partner for more cash and when it is profitable, youll tell your partner its breaking even. And when the restaurant finally fizzles out because its not the in thing anymore, youll sell off fixtures and equipment and pocket the cash and then finally sell the whole thing without your partner knowing and run leaving the partner with all the unpaid bills and unpaid taxes. I know a gringo who just opened up a fast food restaurant in the new Premium Plaza partnering with the owner of the brand name. I pleaded him not to partner with a paisa. Guess who put up all the cash? I hope it works out for him but history just may have to repeat itself.
|
|
spigrimace comments on How difficult is it to open a small restaurant/bar in medellin? You know, to satisfy client requests, 2 years ago I had some working girls sitting around during NFL season and the gringos didnt want to pay the $75 mil with the private room upstairs included! They didnt understand why it wasnt free or at least included in the price of a 6 mil picher of beer. Yet a lot of these guys will bet $500.000 pesos on a cucuta soccer match. go figure.
|
|
spigrimace comments on How difficult is it to open a small restaurant/bar in medellin? If you havent figured it out yet, a lot of those restaurants where you get a steak dinner for like $8mil are fronts for launduring money for you know what which is why Im surpirsed they havent opened an all-u-can eat place which would be perfect for cleansing purposes. So that competition is hard to compete with if youre trying to make a profit. Another problem that is creeping up is the old saying when the US sneezes, latin america catches a cold. Well business accross the board down here in Medellin are suffering. Everything from no lines at the notaria accross the street to Archies Pizza closing in Molinos mall, to Burger Queen now for sale (small burger chain: one on La Playa the other on la 80 close to the santa gema church/33 - he wants $250 millones for the 2 by the way or $160millones for la playa and $120 for la 80). For Medellin, They stopped handing out liquor licenses and a newer problem that needs to be addressed is that to me, now is the time to stop handing out restaurant/cafeteria licenses because its choking off a lot of businesses (ok Im biased as I have a sports bar and Hamburger restaurant) but the key to survival is one has to be nimble enough to adjust quickly and diversify their businesses enough to keep sales from falling off. Case in point, I affiliated my sports bar with one of the online sportsbooks and so we have the added service of facilitating bets on any sporting event coupled with being able to watch that NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, Rugby, Cricket, soccer match, Horse race, UFC pay per view or whatever sporting event live while you have action has helped. The locals enjoy it and the foreigners like the fact they dont have to worry if their credit card will let them make a deposit into an online sportsbook. The small commision percentage I get from the sportsbook every month is a new revenue stream that makes up for a slump in sales and so it lets me trudge on.

spigrimace comments on The best shops in Medellin... Theres a gringo who visits Medellin often who has a beautiful girlfriend that lives down here and she truly has an artistic gift and makes and sells handmade (homemade) very high quality leather purses/handbags that are extremely fashionable, chic and unique. spigrimace comments on What makes a good Motel? (in Medellin) Just a loco hanging out until 5am. I have been there probably about 20 times since 2002. And it is totally changed and a lot less seedy now. Even on the verge of glam in the discoteca. They had the one shootout in there like 10 years ago and it cant shake the bad rap. You get frisked like 3 times b4 you can get in there. The cops come in almost every night and frisk everyone down as well. Security always in the bathrooms. I usually park accross the street in front of those small industrial businesses for an easier entry/exit. Honestly I usually at least get a phone number from some girl while there. A lot less pre-pagos in there than a couple of years back as well.

spigrimace comments on What makes a good Motel? (in Medellin) Theres Penthouse too. One thing I dont like in Punto Cero is you have to call the "front desk" to get the hot tub going. If you have the amenity, let me use it. Funny and true story: A bunch of years back a friend was visiting Medellin and I took a date out and she brought a friend for him. We went out and all had a really good time so at like 3am we suggested a motel and they totally were into it. Its a short drive from La Clarita to Punto Cero and we got 2 suites side by side. After taking care of business they called our room asking if we were ready to leave, so I called the front desk and asked for the bill. It was the $30k special they run and gladly paid it. We met in the carport and got in my car. We get to the exit and that ominous black window. At that point my friend says "where do we pay?" simultaneously as the gate opens. I screech the tires and fly outta there hoping no ninja mafiosos tracked us down as he never paid for his suite. Homer simpson style 2 for 1 special so he bought the final bottle of rum of the fun night with the unforseen savings.

spigrimace comments on Pago de EPS por internet You need 2 things. 1) Get your Colombian Bank to have your colombian bank account set up to allow PSE/ACH payments so you can pay bills online. Tell them it´s to pay bills like EPM, Servicios, Direc TV and EPS, etc. Dont let them refer you back to SOI which administers the online EPS system!! For Bancolombia, this costs like $36000/mo. and in the Bancolombia online surcursal its the "pagos a terceros" option so they can understand what youre trying to have access to. 2) go to www.soi.com.co and click "solicitar clave" and get that 3) when you have one and two done, then you need to login and "elaborar nueva planilla" at www.soi.com.co. You put in the names, cedulas, salaries and the eps entities that each employee is affiliated. Save the planilla and you can also pay it online. Then monthly, simply open up the saved planilla and change the month so you dont have to enter all the employee info again and resave the planilla. You can add or retirar employees as you need to. After the first time, it takes like 3 minutes to update the saved planilla month of payment and pay.
