FLY. You could have booked the Bogota - Cali Portion of the Flight into your ticket , the ticket probably would have cost no more then $50 bucks more then the regular ticket , I do it all of the time.

In any case a round trip to Cali , should cost you in the region of $100-150 , SO MY TWOPENCE WORTH is FLY.

Forget Juan Valdez and Starbucks. There is only one Coffee And that is BOHRCAFE , Tasted their Coffee whilst in Bogota , THE BEST by a country mile , It is more expensive then the other brands , but what the heck "You pay for what you get".

I think it is now avaliable for the General Public in certain stores in Bogota.

I remember way back in must have been 97,98 in an empty VIP bar in Bogota , two chicks turned up and called me over to dance with them , One of them was convinced that I was American and did not want anything to do with me , She also tried to divert her friend , however once they understood that I was British they actually did a 180 degree turn and were more then welcoming.

Commercial Diving in Colombia njhitman ,

Take it your monicker stands for New Jersey Hitman.?.

Anyhow , commercial diving is not really the forte of PBH posters , As an avid scuba diver I would strongly advise you as to the safety concerns with working for a Colombia Commercial Dive Company , as they do not have any form of recourse in the advent of an accident they safety guidelines may not be as strictly adhered to as in the US and the EU.

If you are going to dive commercially there for a living I suggest that you either find an American or European company in Colombia or Atleast an outfit that has Americans working for it.

I would seek professional Advise on this before you attempt to find work in Colombia , the employment situation there is bleek , to put it mildly.

I will say however that Colombia is a majical place to live and work , the pay will be an order of magnitude less the the US , but what the heck , the quality of life is better there.

Real Estate in Cartegena is approaching US prices.

Colombian Blog - THE SPINOFF Ok shortly after I started posting on here I recieved a PM asking me to register for CB.

Whilst I did go over and take a look at the site , it apperared that there were too many sections on the site and it was confusing , also it appeared that the moderator started 95 % of the topics.

Whilst it is great that we get new forums on Colombia , I must say in my humble opinion that PBH is the original and still by far the best.

It makes me chuckle how there are threads on CB that try to put this site down , and make theirs look superior , its only innocent fun.

May I be the first to thank Peter on a great website and for taking the time and effort to keep this place an amusing and informative Colombian site.

FAO Gringo in Bogota Firstly , I must agree with you to a certain extent , Colombia is still dangerous if you do not adhere to some common sense rules , however it is a magnitude less dangerous then when I first started travelling there in early 1990's.

Yes this site does have its fair share of Gringos that are semi clueless on Colombian culture that are married to Colombianas but there are still a hardcore of clued up posters on here.

Recently whilst in Cali I met one of these Americans that described the danger in Colombia as Bullshit , this nievety and lack of concern for the possible dangers to outsiders will unfortunately lead to his/their un-doings , and when it does happen they will change their tune.

Unforunatelyy it is so easy to be lulled into a false sense of security in Colombia , I am allways on guard and allways use the common sense rules.

There are dangerous parts of all cities within the globe and New York is more dangerous the Cali , would you wander around in the Bronx late at night.?.

The difference in Colombia is that there is a remote chance of kidnapping , back in the 90s I would never have driven from city to city , for example from Cali to Buenaventura , but nowdays most of the roadways in Colombia are safe , you probably have more chance of being robbed in Milan then Bogota.

Gringo in Bogota I think your comments are slightly of base , and if you are intending on stirring a Hornets nest up upon here , I think you have been sucessful.

ISLA PALMA The above report is what I feel , highly Inaccurate.

Firstly they provide snacks and Beverages on the boatride and the ride is 2 Hours on a very good boat.

The Rooms and Food are first Class for Colombia , Its Buffet style , but they have excellent fresh food , they even fry fresh Calamari in front of you.

The resort is all Inclusive , that includes all food beverages and even cigarettes.

It is designated more as a Honeynmoon resort , If you want sex sun and sand forget Isla Palma , its a place where you go to relax.

The Hotel has 40 rooms , the rooms are great and spacey and you will get very good service.

The Beach is great and has a bar , you will not have to fight for beach chairs. You can even have a massage on the beach.

My first trip with Decameron Aquarium in San Andres was a dissapointment but the trip to Isla Palma more then made up for that.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Manizales 1...There is a shanty town on the outskirts of Manizales , stay away from that area , I was robbed there back in 98. The town center should be safe enough , however do not walk around with large ammounts of cash , credit cards or your passport , leave your essential belongings with your friend.
2...Not stayed in the Hostel Mountain House but Hotels are not abundant in Manizales , hence Las Colinas will cost you $100 per night.I would stay in the Hostel and leave your money and passport with your friend.
3...Americans/Europeans do not need a visa for entering Colombia , upon entry you can get a 30/60 day entry permit , if you require to stay longer you will have to visit Das for an extension , you can stay a maximum of 6 months a year within Colombia. To be certain call the Colombian Consulate in Canada to enquire about entry requirements.
4...Fast Foof will be roughly the same price as here if you eat in Presto , Kokorico or the such likes , the street vendors selling fast food will be less expensive then the US , although not by much , back in the early 90's when the exchange was good it was much cheaper.
5...If you go to Colombia why eat Chinese food , for sure there are Chinese restaurants in Manizales , there are however not PF Changs or Benihana standards , you may find Dim Sum in Manizales , certainly you will in Bogota , but I would eat chinese food in Canada , its a speciality there due to the High oriental population.

I would strongly recommend that you spend atleast 3 days in Bogota , its allmost European City standards , GREAT REASTAURANTS.

65 Per Day a lot.?. For an all inclusive vacation.?. Room and Board and food / Drinks.?.

If your going on vacation enjoy yourself , for 5 bucks a Day you will get nothing and have a miserable time.

Nuqui is a far cry from Hawaii , infact most locals are still tribal , you can whale watch , fish for huge fish , scuba , and just take in the eco environment.

TRY Nuqui od Isla Palma I think Admin should pin a Topic about SA as this question seems to pop up every week.

Whereever you go it will not be cheap 70-100 per day All Inclusive.

My advice from a person that has travelled to most beach destinations.

1...Isla Palma(see www.decameron.com) about 70-100 per night all included.
2...Nuqui(see www.elcantil.com or .co) about 65 per night.

Cannot do better then these two places in my mind , some of the Islands around Cartagena are also very nice but private and very expensive.

You have more chance of finding Utopia in the Scottish Higlands then in Colombia , but I will try to answer your questions.

1...Most places in Colombia are fairly safe these days , but you must abide by common sense rules.
2...When you say most Acceptable Climate , do you require something like a perpetual spring .?. If so I would head for Cuernavaca in Mexico.
3...Above 800m , I would narrow your search to the Coffee Triangle.
4...Medium Size Town , theres mant to choose from in Colombia.
5...Has Good Access , choose a town in the coffee rejoin that has an Airport.
6...Is in Colombia , for you with your concerns you may be better of in or Around Bogota , there are some nice places , but Bogota had good shopping , good restarants and medical and an International Airport.

I personally love Bogota , but also there are some other great cities that I would alao live in , being Manizales , Bucaramanga , Pereria , and Ibague.

In my humble opinion I would take a trip to Colombia , base yourself in Bogota in say the Zona Rosa and select 5-8 cities that you wish to visit and take two day trips to each to establish if or not you like them.

For me Bucaramanga would be an Ideal retirement destination.

By the way do you speak Spanish , If not learn before you go.

An its hard to find Haggis and Drambuie in Colombia , although not impossible , Centro Andino has a store that sells specialized food and drink from around the world , its expensive but what the heck , you only live once.

Gringo D The key to Sucess with Hotels such as Sunrise is to Book a package at a Travel Agent within Colombia.

I would estimate 500 for 5 and 600 for 7 Nights Including Flight and meals.It is a 5 star Hotel comparing with say an Intercontinental.

It has supposedly one of the best Discos in SA called Blue Deep.

Do not go with Decameron , Canadian and European Touristy type Hotels.

Yes Providencia is better , less comercial , unspoiled and better if you like the quieter more secluded location , diving is certainly better in Providencia.

How ever I still say Hit Nuqui(Hotel El Cantil) or Isla Palma(Decameron).

My Verdict on San Andres Was told before I left Medellin not to go to San Andres as it was Old and Dusty.

I payed about $900 for 8 nights in The Aquarium , BIG MISTAKE as I went to look at all of the other Hotels and the Marazul and Sunrise were the best , with the Sunrise the best by far.

The beach was OK and the downtown very old and dusty , although I was warned , it was probably nice in SA 10-15 years ago , yes its a major drugs port and yes plenty of Money from Drugs on show houses etc.

I will say that if you Scuba dive its good , nice clear ocean and calm , but apart from that SA is nothing to write home about.

If I ever go back there I would sta in the Dolphines Hotel 25 per night including food , nice clean and great pool , close by downtown , and would not dive with the dive school in the Aquarium but with the dive shop located in the Sunrise , they have a good boat and staff.

I have said this before but these are the places to visit in Colombia.

Jeans This is what I will say , I bought Chevignon and Diesel Jeans in Bogota , Centro Andino for $30-$40 Original in the respective original stores but these were sale prices.

The trouble now is copies of all Branded Jeans from the Medellin area's are so good that its hard to tell the difference from them and Authentic , the copies run $15 or $20.

I will certainly add that the Euro Clothes were cheaper in Colombia then in USA , But and bit but you have to shop around and shop in the sales.

Andino and teh major Malls are the only places where you can guarantee that you will get original clothing.

Medellin by the way is the clothes manufacturing capital of Colombia.

I could not understand recently how so many Colombians could afford Lacoste polo shirts when on a two month trip in Cali , when the average salary is 300 or so a month and a Polo from Lacoste is $100 , the answer to that was a copy is $10 in Passage Cali , in Passage Cali you can get copies of just about any major clothes line that appear 100% geniune for next to nothing , worth a trip and be sure to bargain as if you are a Gringo they will inflate the prices.

FLY If money is not an Object then I would fly everywhere in Colombia , Remember as the Country is Basically covered in Mountain Ranges driving is time consuming.

Although Manizales is not that Far from Bogota , I assume a Taxi would be even more expensive then a then a Round trip Airfare which will run you $100-150(Round trip).

I noticed that when I was in Buenaventura Taxis were actually taking people in groups of 4 Back to Cali for $10per person , not bad for a couple of Hours drive.

Does anyone on here have any idea how much a Taxi would cost from Bogota to Manizales.?.

CALI / BUENAVENTURA RD If you travel this route and are not Colombian , 100 make sure that you take your passport , otherwise the will threaten to take you to jail and you will end uppaying him 100,000 peso's as I had to.

San Andres Forget the Aquarium overpriced , Marazul is better but still overpriced , suggest the Sunrise GREAT HOTEL , book with a travel agent including flight you can get some awesome package deals like $500 for a week.

Hotel Dolphines is also good for the price 25$ per night and all food included , its a nice clean Hotel with good food at a Budget price close by the Town Center and beach.

But I was not impressed with San Andres , old and dusty, I would Advise Providencia , Rosario Islands , Nuqui or Isla Palma(Decameroon) THE LATER BEING THE BEST OF THE BUNCH.

Your Friend I take it you know her full name.?.If so do a telephone search on the Internet , Manizales is not a huge place , someone there will know where she is.

If you are not in Colombia try the phone search firstly and buy one of those cheap phone cards and start calling , another way would be to place an Add in the local Manizales Paper with your email address.

To locate someone in Bogota may be a little more difficult though still Do-able.

A private investigator will just take your pesos and do what you can do i.e internet research.

Sensible Thing to do would not to travel to any known area's that Guerilla frequent , as stated previuosly A gringo is Like Blood for the Sharks.

One thing that I can say is that URIBE has got most major cities safer with corncerns to Guerilla Activities , for example the Road from Cali to Buenaventura is now safe , however as they are so many Army posted along the roads the chances are if you are the driver and gringo looking or in a nicer car you will probably have to pay some sort of a bribe to the Police if you dont have your documents with you for example.

Best way if you are not sure is to either take a Taxi or Fly.

JOBS When I say jobs are hard to come by , what I should say is that since 9/11 jobs in general have been hard to find , It was easy to find work in the USA pre2000 , now it is most definately easier in the U.K as the economy is better there now.

It all depends on what work you are seeking I guess , but in the skilled sector its very difficult , and with the ammount of outsourcing / layoffs that are going on in the Multi national companies its only going to get harder.

It may be that still the USA gives the best standard of living , although thats debateable unless you have actually lived worldwide , but even that so called "best standard of living" is beibg eroded at an alarming rate

Issues Firstly , I take it you were in the USA on work/student visa's , the whole visa process since 2002 has been very much complicated , to find a job and a sponser in the US will be hard if you are based in the EU , Have you considered other EU countries.?.

Currently I am bumping into many Colombians that have Moved to Spain , here you will have no language barriers and no real visa issues.

I would not advise moving back to the USA at present , things are not great , jobs are hard to come by and Visas also , especially as you are Colombian I take it.

Heading to Bogota may not be such a bad idea , but its very hard to find a job job there.

I would suggest looking at other EU countries , London will be more like NYC , there is a small Colombian community in London.

Also Holland , Spain , France , Portugal are worth looking into , The EU will give you a better lifestyle then Colombia , have you considered another part of Italy more southern , warmer etc.?.

Manizales Its not a bad little city , safer then the other big cities , its in the Coffee rejoin the "Coffee Triangle" as they put it.

The best Hotel is Las Colinas but its nothing special for $100 per night , most of the other Hotels are just Normal little small town hotels. The Cathedral is nice , climate is Not Cali heat , but not as cool as Bogota.

Not all of the ammenities of a big city , but what do you expect.?.

Colombia is a nice country to visit on vacation or if you are independantly wealthy , in the UK you can enjoy a US like income and lifestyle.

I would say to take your wife back for a two week vacation in here home town , The UK certainly offers a person better lifestyle and opportunity then Colombia.

I was asked a similar question by a lady in Cali who wanted to live in Canada , She had a good job in Cali a new car , Apartment etc , The cold winters in Canada can be brutal and for a Person used to the Tropical climate of Cali is most certainly cause for concern , this sort of thing needs to the wayed up on a case by case basis , I advised her to stay in Colombia.
