Shanidar comments on Self entitled Colombianas bueno_pues : sorry, but you are deluding yourself. The lower estratos have poorer houses, poorer people, frequently lower class people. If you think it is just for billing purposes, you head is in the sand. Was married to an estrato 2, low class, selfish, and a visa hunter. Currently married to a 4. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, calm collected, intelligent. You would think that that Estrato 4 was on a different planet than Estrato 2 No one is saying that this is a horrible terrible thing to occur, it is only being discussed, because it is less common in the US. When I was working there, all my bills were Estrato 6, it really sucked...

Shanidar comments on Running my own company with an Investment Visa I would have had mine in a week, but I found out I just didn't need it. I know of americans operating in Medellin under the visa that lets you "expand" your US business into Colombia. These people's US business location is a MailBoxes R Us and a phone number. Everything is possible, but you may have to make several calls... Call the consulate now and get the real info

Shanidar comments on Treasure Hunters screwed someone please 'splain me why Maritime law doesn't apply. Under Maritime law, salvage is a right of the person/party who finds the wreck. Recently England changed their laws to confict with Maritime Law, but it is very uncommon and Maritime law predates most countries in the Western Hemisphere...

Shanidar comments on What is there to do Today???? Plan to go see the Salt Cathedral. Go see the Gold museum Go hang out at the Zona rosa and buy some Hard Rock crap Go to a restaurant chain called Las Acacias and have a Bandeja Paisa Be sure to have a couple of Micheladas Beer with lots of lime and some salt Go walk around / hangout at Centro comercial Unicentro. Nice little cafe across the street Pay a cabbie to show you some sites. Negotiate the hourly rate before leaving. In Medellin right now, taxi rates are fixed by the city and the currently hourly rate is 18,000 an hour. I expect Btá has a similar rate. Go to breakfast at La Castellana. It is around 19 and (someone help) Go to any well known mall or plaza and have a tinto (coffee) BUT GET OUT OF THE HOTEL. You could ask the hotel staff where to go, what to see

Shanidar comments on Hello i'm new to this forum and Going to Bogota For the 1st Time. The only thing I would add, that is not obvious.... Is this. Offically they say you should never hail a cab, but especially don't hail a cab in front of the US Embassy. Several times an American has been f*cked over, after hailing a cab from in front of the Embassy. As far as going drinking, there are plenty of decent neighborhood areas, that are safe, and not full of americans, and therefore, not targets. Try Plaza de Las Americas in Barrio Milenta. I never had any issues there, the mall is nice and lots of bars on the street leading up to it (1 de Mayo, I think? Someone assist, please) Have fun and turn off your American Newscast, it is alarmist and will make you worry over nothing

Shanidar comments on I know you guys can help me out fellas Some of this information is incorrect. You will need an Apostille on your birth certificate, if you had divorces, you would need them to have an Apostille. The papers must be dated less than ninety (90) days old, to be valid. You don't really need notary search saying you are single, since that isn't a document that exists in the US. The Apostille will come from the Department of State of whatever state is issuing the document. IE, my birth certificate had to have an apostille from Ohio, the divorce had to have an Apostille from Texas.... We tried to wade through all this crap, two or three times. You know what brought it all together? A cooperative priest. I think my wife may have given him a copy of my passport. I don't believe she provided any other documents. Always check two or three sources, for the same info, when dealing with Colombia. For every task, you'll find a couple people saying it can't be done, and then you will find someone willing to work with you. Suerte

Shanidar comments on Poblado - Best or Worst of Medellin? One other thig... I hear that Bello is not a great place for someone who doesn't blend in, ie, if you "look" American, I'd think twice about Bello

Shanidar comments on Poblado - Best or Worst of Medellin? Wow... that foto looks a long way from El Poblado. Where were you that wasn't straight uphill/downhill ?

Shanidar comments on WHAT ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWNS TO VISIT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE OF MEDELLIN Jardin Rocks, full of good people. and that isn't just because I'm related to a good many of them... If you are going during a puente, arrange your taxi at least a week in advance. Consider paying for all three seats if you want a "private" cab

Shanidar comments on For Rent: Bed and Breakfast, Medellin Sounds High I paid 850,000 monthly, for a fully/over furnished apartment. 3 bed rooms, computer, free internet, hot water... bath tub and all bills included. And this was the gringo price, across the street from the Univ de Antioquia

Shanidar comments on Maria Full Of Grace...hmm Tu-Usted-Vos with my paisa, Usted was a sure sign she was pissed off. But she used the excuse that it was more respectful. Don't miss her, but I missed Colombia so much, I moved here...

Shanidar comments on Robledo, Medellin I spent a considerable amount of time in robledo-diamante. It was safe enough to walk the streets.. My soon to be ex-wife, visa hunter(I'm not bitter) lived there. she says it is an estrato 3-4 barrio, but I don't see 4, IMHO

Shanidar comments on Search: Apt, La Universidad De Antioquia Hmm, I know of one... I lived there for three months I paid 850,000 ($300 at the time) for an apartment across the street from the main entrance of UdeA. It was fully furnished, two student bedrooms and a master bedroom, Cable TV, computer with internet and printer and a bathtub/shower with hot water.

Shanidar comments on Colombian Coffee Well, I think the coffee was fresh The Carrefour in Envigado continuosly restocked I was there. I was there at least twice a week for three months, and frequently they were sold out of the Cafe la Bastilla Tipo 2. As it is roasted in Medellin, and few klicks from Envigado, and as I have been drinking and hunting good coffee for 20+ years, I think it was fresh.

Shanidar comments on Cabanas, Hotel near Bogota (Melgar, Giradot)? Melgar Finca I am preparing to move to Melgar for work. I will be looking for housing. I certainly wouldn't mind living in a finca, but of course, the price would be important.

Shanidar comments on Colombian Coffee Cafe La Bastilla Tipo Medio (Tipo 2) Wicked good coffee. Roasted in Medellin, fresh in the stores. Don't get over economical and buy the 2.5 kilo bag. It is not vacuum packed. When my fiancee brought that size bag with her, it exploded in her luggage. Buy the 500 gram vacuum bricks of whatever brand you like...

Shanidar comments on truth or consequences I had a similar thing happen... when I got attitude about expecting my fiancee to make time for me. I kept hopig, etc, that things would change.

Shanidar comments on Universities in Medellin? The only lead I can give you is the Colombo American institute book store. The book we found, was expensive, was written ENTIRELY en English, and will require all of your teaching skills. For me, it required more than I have.
